That definitely is a good idea not only for bandwidth purposes, but for forum viewing purposes.

I have extremely fast internet on a really speedy computer, but when people have huge animated signatures of really high quality, it definitely makes the forum run slower, which is quite bothersome when posting. I'm sure those with slow internet would have a terrible time posting and viewing if signatures are too large (I've also had experience with slow internet: it's not fun... especially when images are over 800 kbs.. it takes forever.)

Because lots of people are feeding the shoutbox and then it grows and grows and then eat more CPU usage?
Right now, I we try to turn off the shoutbox first. If the situation improves, then we might turn it back on again. Might.

(bonus: for people who hate signatures, you can disable it Board Settings)

Got a question for you Admin. I know you said the CPU was the main problem. But would upgrading to a larger server help at all and possibly bring back the shoutbox? If so I'm wiling to donate a little each month to that cause.
