Here are some ideas to reduce bandwidth that actually WORK.
You misunderstood why the site is down. The problem is NOT bandwidth, the real problem is CPU usage, you know, processing the script, gathering data from the database...

- Limit avatar demsions and size. 100x100 at 200kb is a loose limit
- Limit picture demsions and size. 600x800 is big enough. If you want to link, post a thumbnail. Size limit should be 500kb. No reason to post a png that os 6mb and as big as a room...
- Sigs should be limited I don't mind on demsions, but something like 600kb is large enough.
The
board rules clearly states:
QUOTE ('Board Rules')
Signature picture are allowed but don't be too large. We recommend that your picture is around 400x200 or below. Also, we also recommend that your picture is in a JPEG format and maximum file size is 200KB but advised to be less than 100kb but recommend less than 50kb for optimized on the internet.

Wait...are you just joking that the server went boom because of all the intense posting that was going on that night? Because I was actually very worried about that myself since that was the night the Clearbourne rp was going nuts with posting...but I didn't want to correlate that to the death of the site. >_< Can't be, we've had other nights with fast posting before...
Part of it. But there's flood control...
Also, the images and CSS and javascript files are cached, so you could actually load pages faster (in theory)

yes it's faster now but who's gonna eat my shouts? O_o
Because lots of people are feeding the shoutbox and then it grows and grows and then eat more CPU usage?
Right now,
I we try to turn off the shoutbox first. If the situation improves, then we
might turn it back on again. Might.
(bonus: for people who hate signatures, you can disable it
