Shoutbox Logs, (as of 20 October 2008) Options

Anyone who has been active in the Shoutbox will find the Archive feature which you can see past shouts. But its very clunky and can only show a few shouts at a time.

I compiled a script in two hours that can grab all the shouts out from the database. Now you can read the shouts offline.

Download now (CRC checksum: B1A1AC44)
The download link is 430 KB, when uncompressed, will explode to 2.22 MB on your hard drive. Note that on every 3000 shouts, it will create another new file. This is to prevent the browser from crashing.

Admin, for some reason the archive button above the big shoutbox only appears for some members. Do u know why that is? And btw, on the shoutbox we've noticed that out of the seven people we've talked to, the four youngests had the button and the three oldests (me included) did not have it.

I also found out that I could see it through firefox but not through internet explorer.

at least two of the members not seeing the button use IE, but Annie uses IE but yet she sees the button...

Wait a minute, I can see the Archive button, and I'm 14 (so, wouldn't I fall in the 'older' category?). So, I don't think it depends on age, or anything like that.

But I'm curious too, Admin! How come only some of us can see it? I still haven't downloaded the new Shoutbox Logs, but I've always had the Archive button (since the Shoutbox was made).

Yeah Jahnavi, you are younger than all the ones who said they didnt have the button, but that was before we asked Terrior and Zhanny who both can see it, so I dont think it has to do with the ages anymore. Anyways, from what I know, me, Prinny, and Marty cant see it...

I would say the problem was solved but unfortunatly Annie sees the button via IE...

I think I have found the answer as I asked I think it was ditta who could see it downloaded the archieve thing admin gave us, whereas I have not and can not see it. So i think the only people can see it have downloaded the archieve thing.

I checked the code for the shoutbox and it definitely does not check the member's age.

I found that in Internet Explorer, the Archive link does not appear (see screenshot), thanks to IE's award-winning award-losing rendering engine.
I tested it on IE6, but not sure about IE7... maybe Annie uses IE7?

The problem with the built-in Archive function is it's very clunky. Quite hard to navigate and the can eat up bandwidth. So I just wrote a little script that just extract those shouts so you can just read them offline (without having to wait for the somewhat slow connection).

Or you can just use these files if you want to stick with Internet Explorer (I previously mentioned that in IE doesn't show that feature).
