“An admirable outlook,” Meredith commented as she returned her attention to Axl. “Then tell me: how do you plan on going about that? What do you feel is the best solution to bringing peace between the people of Kemla, and those they’ve condemned?”

Meredith half-expected the warriors wouldn’t cooperate, but Martin’s words surprisingly gave her pause. “Unexpectedly, you did assist us in the battle, and seeing as you went out of your way to protect one of our own, I should offer my gratitude,” she admitted, glancing back towards Fynt; however, her tone made it sound as though she were hesitant to believe her own words.

“I do, indeed,” Meredith answered Martin. “And your companion just gave me what I wanted.” By her tone, the Force Commander seemed slightly disappointed. “I was hoping the other fugitives had died, but you say they survived after all these years? They will need to be apprehended, immediately.” Her grip tightened around the hilt of her greatsword, and then she spoke as though she were issuing an absolute order. “As fugitives marked for death by the Destiny Council, you are to be taken into custody… again. If you cooperate, and tell the Council where these criminals are hiding and how to get to them, you may be shown mercy.”

((Don’t worry; you nailed it.))

Meredith simply nodded, gesturing towards the nearby Rift. “We’ve known a twisted world lies beyond these… anomalies, and none who ventured through them ever returned alive. Thus, your execution was labeled: death through unlivable exile.”

“Feh, you call that ‘unlivable’?” Gilgamesh spat. “I’ve survived countless hells far worse than that blighted realm.”

Meredith continued as though she hadn’t heard the King. “So I say again: how has this come to pass? How have you escaped?”

((I think I’ve caught what you got, P-girl. I could have sworn I’d posted this a long time ago…))

Meredith’s eyes narrowed on Axl and Martin. “I know you,” she stated, as though reminding herself. “The fugitives that were brought to the Council yesterday.” A look of confusion crossed her face. “But, your execution had been reported as successful the following evening… Yet you stand here.” After a momentary pause in thought, the elder soldier returned her attention to the warriors before her. “I demand to know how it is that you are not only alive, but have also escaped custody.”

With a pained, echoed screech, Martin’s attack tore through the Ing, instantly reducing it into a black mist that fizzled away into the air, while its red core faded away into nothingness. As though it were in direct response to the Ing’s death, the nearby Dark Portal destabilized into a Rift, cutting off any further attacks from the “other” world. As a unit, the soldiers of Kemla moved until Martin was in the same field of view as Axl and the rest; it almost seemed as though their target had suddenly switched from the dead creature to the heroes themselves. In the back of her mind, Shiki was expecting an incoming attack.

“Stand down,” the leader ordered. Gilgamesh wasn’t sure at first to whom she was issuing that command, but then the soldiers visibly relaxed their guard; Fynt and his Inkua counterpart eventually sheathed their weapons, but the leader kept her greatsword in hand. With her free hand, she reached up and removed the faceplate attached to her headdress, revealing an aging face framed by blonde hair that was showing increasing signs of greying. Her blue eyes bore down upon each warrior with the predatory gaze one might expect to find in a lion – inside its own den. The woman slowly nodded, seemingly in either greeting or thanks. “I am Meredith, Force Commander of Kemla’s armies and Head-of-the-Guard of Inkua,” she stated in a practiced introduction.

Gilgamesh and Shiki mirrored Martin’s tactics by attacking the incoming tentacles. All three dark tendrils dissipated into smoke after receiving damage while the fourth that Axl’d caught between his scythes held fast. The Ing angrily attempted to yank backwards, trying to free itself from Axl’s grasp.

“I’m just fine where I am, mon-!” Gilgamesh didn’t quite get to finish his statement as the lead soldier stepped forward to yank him unceremoniously backwards, forcing him to stumble, off balance, into a heap next to Axl.

“Leave the fighting to those who can handle it,” she angrily snapped at the seething King.

“Mongrel! You dare to lay a hand on me?!” Gilgamesh didn’t have time to get his answer as the Ing suddenly shook its body. Four new tentacles grew from seemingly out of nowhere within its body and instantly lashed out towards Gilgamesh, Shiki, Axl, and Martin, each tendril acting like a rapidly extending spear, aiming to impale each warrior through their chest.

The Ing ceased its retreat and gave an aggressive screech towards its enemies as the glow of its red core intensified. During the battle, Gilgamesh managed to recover the brains that’d been tossed around in his skull and sluggishly got back onto his feet. Meanwhile, the three soldiers moved as one and slowly marched forwards, keeping their stance defensive as they tried to force the Ing back towards the city’s giant outer wall.

((*grumble*I hate work*grumble*))

The tendrils Martin had slashed dissipated into a black mist, destroyed from his blade’s attack. At the same time, Axl’s attack ripped through the Ing’s body, leaving gaping tears in the creature’s cage-like body. The Ing ceased its spinning immediately as it screeched in pain and tried to back away from the group, simultaneously lashing out with its two remaining tendrils towards anyone in sight.

“Keep attacking, but don’t let it touch you,” Shiki warned the others as she used her knife to slash through the Ing’s attack, destroying its remaining appendages.

The lead soldier gave a slight grunt in frustration. “Fall back,” she ordered the others, “and defend the combatants.” As all three soldiers regrouped with Axl, Shiki, and Martin, the translucent Ing began to weave its way around the battlefield. Not being too particularly creative or clever about it, it appeared as though it were simply trying to decide what next approach would be best.

Gilgamesh… apparently hadn’t learned his lesson the first time, and was even a little ticked that his attack had failed. Dealing with an enemy he couldn’t touch was a new concept for him. That said, he attempted a second attack by lunging sword-first towards the Ing’s red core – and passed right through it. The instant he emerged on the other side, the creature suddenly materialized and spun like a wild top between all seven warriors, attempting to ruthlessly whip everyone nearby with its four tendrils.

Since Gilgamesh was the closest, and with his back still turned to the creature, he was immediately assaulted by the lashes and simultaneously thrown forwards into the ground. Fynt and the other two guards tried to act as shields for Axl and the others against the onslaught.

Shiki bolted into the battle and defended Fynt alongside Martin by deflecting the remaining tentacle; both it and the one Martin had attacked recoiled with small signs of damage. Axl’s grip on the Ing’s tendrils kept it from the attacking the other two guards, to which it gave out a screech in protest. Gilgamesh calmly sped towards the creature and attacked with a vertical slash. The instant the blade was to connect with the Ing’s “flesh”, though, the entirety of the creature suddenly became transparent and wavered in the air like that of a mirage. Gilgamesh’s sword passed right through its body without causing any damage and Axl’s grip on its tentacles was lost completely as his chains passed through the tendrils as though they weren’t even there.

Axl’s proclamation immediately caught the attention of both the guards and the floating Ing.

The leader among the guards – indicated by small gold adornments on the armor – took a brief glance at Axl’s and Martin’s weapons while noticing Shiki brandishing her knife and Gilgamesh wielding a short golden broadsword he’d summoned. “Civilians, leave these premises, immediately,” the leader ordered in the stern voice of an older woman. “This area is unsafe.” As if to prove her point, the creature let out another Ing-like screech and lashed out with two of its tentacles towards an unsuspecting Fynt. At the same time, it used its remaining two tendrils like a massive whip against the leader and the second guard, who managed to successfully brace their blades against the strike.

Shiki followed the others, while Gilgamesh reluctantly kept up. The shouting hadn’t yet ceased, and it came from the far end of the complex – towards Inkua’s outer wall. As the warriors moved closer towards where Fynt had disappeared, Shiki could hear an additional sound amidst the voices of the soldiers ahead – it was the unmistakable screech of an Ing.

When the group arrived, they came to a small clearing between four buildings and the capitol’s giant white wall. An active Dark Portal sat within a charred divot in the stone wall, with four soldiers surrounding it; three were from Inkua’s guard while the fourth was Fynt. Between the soldiers and the open Portal hovered a creature nearly four feet tall ((and yes, this thing does float/fly; I'm not sure why its concept art shows it with roots...)), with a body that looked like some twisted, black ribcage surrounding a glowing red core. Four dark tendrils lanced out from the creature’s “body” and struck one of the soldiers, sending the flailing man crashing into the wall of one of the nearby buildings, where he silently slumped to the ground.

Gilgamesh stopped and turned towards the others; his expression was one of confusion. “You wish to aid those who insist in persecuting us?” he asked incredulously.

Shiki, who’d remained in place with Axl and Martin, simply nodded. “Unanimous vote, Goldenrod,” she replied.

Gilgamesh’s jaw clenched tight, but his response was a simple shrug. “Well, we’ll just have to see how well this turns out,” he said as he rejoined them.

Fynt opened his mouth to respond to Martin, but was immediately interrupted when he heard a few guards shouting several buildings away. Military training and instinct kicked in and before he could help it, Fynt had his hand on the hilt of his sword and ran off in the direction of the shouting.

Gilgamesh gave an audible sigh of relief. “Finally! We’re rid of the leeching mongrel,” he groaned after nodding in agreement with Axl.

“Should we get involved with whatever that was, or just stick with the first plan?” Shiki asked, to which Gilgamesh merely responded by marching away from the docks in search of any nearby inn, before anyone could voice their answers.

Shiki nodded her thanks as she stepped onto the dock; Fynt was the last to disembark. “Anytime lads,” Kester replied to Axl and Martin with a smile. “Keep safe – you hear?” With that, he brought in Lissie’s lines and set the small trawler back towards the island from which they came.

The dockyard was surprisingly lifeless; save for the large number of torches scattered across the entire complex, as well as the occasional guard that would emerge from one alleyway only to vanish down another, little seemed to stir once nightfall settled.

“Any ideas where to go from here?” Gilgamesh eventually voiced.

((Well, yeah, but I used to pride myself on lacking a life! What the heck’s happened to me?!))

Kester made good on his word. By the time the sun’s last rays disappeared beyond the horizon, the ferry was inching its way towards one of the few open wood-and-stone docks that lined the water’s edge. Most of the multi-dozen docks had vessels ranging from small trawlers like Lissie to massive warships that seemed to belong to a steampunk era fixed to their moors. Every dock fed further inland to a large complex of warehouses and temporary housing; a short distance beyond that, Inkua’s massive white eastern wall rose to nearly block out the sky above the smattering of squat, stone buildings. The giant pearl gate that faced towards the water was sealed shut for the night – as Kester’d explained.

“Trouble is… they lock the city up at nightfall,” he said as he gestured towards the smaller buildings near the docks. “You can find decent rooms for the night, though, in the inns they keep out here for late travelers and workers.” Lissie finally came to a stop next to one of the docks, and Kester secured the vessel.

Gilgamesh instinctively wrinkled his nose at the prevailing odors of fish and seawater – this was not someplace in which a King should be spending his time. Nevertheless, he waited until Kester had made sure Lissie wasn’t going anywhere before the Golden King disembarked.

((Sorry 'bout the delay, guys. Gotta love it when work ruins a routine schedule...))

((By the way, if anyone wants, we can do a small time-skip to Inkua.))

Gilgamesh merely nodded in agreement with Axl.

“I don’t really know, Mr. Axl,” Kester said with a shrug. Returning his attention towards the miniscule firelights of capitol, Inkua near the horizon, he continued. “From this far, I can’t even tell how many Councilors are aboard; for all we know, the ferry might be empty and is returning to retrieve the island’s Councilor, Oswald.” The ferryman’s hearty smile returned. “No worries though, lad. If you travelers were hoping to meet the Council, I’m sure someone’ll still be around in Inkua tomorrow.”

“I can’t rightly say,” Kester replied. “The Destiny Council have their own private ferry, so they come and go whenever they please; smaller ‘fish’ like me’re never really graced with their presence…” Shiki had joined Martin in trying to keep a bit lower without making it obvious to Kester that they were hiding; even though the Council’s ferry remained at a kilometer’s distance, she wasn’t completely convinced that there couldn’t be eyes watching Lissie as they passed. Gilgamesh merely kept a steady and silent glare on the vessel. “Looks like they’re headed for the island,” Kester commented as the boat passed on without any hesitation. “Were there any special events planned for tomorrow, Lieutenant?”

“Hm,” Fynt said with a shake of his head.

“Oh, should be just a few more hours,” Kester called from Lissie’s wheelhouse.

Gilgamesh knew what Martin was trying to do, and while he yearned to keep prodding Axl, his experience with “King” Arturia taught him that he needed to be patient. Axl would come around. Most often did. For now, he silently agreed with Martin to lay off. With his grin returning – though under the circumstances, it probably seemed more sadistic – the King returned to reclining against the mast and left Axl alone with one final comment. “Think it over, traveler. But don’t brood over it; it ill suits you.”

Kester’s eyes squinted at the horizon, which the sun had finally disappeared behind. A small flicker of flame was traveling from the western horizon and had over time passed by nearly a kilometer from Lissie’s port side. His experience of working this part of the sea helped him identify the flame’s owner despite the growing darkness of nighttime. “Well, looks like the Council’s out for a late cruise,” he commented.

“See? That wasn’t so hard, was it?” Gilgamesh asked as he shook his head. “You humans always overcomplicate everything. You know who you are and of what you’re capable; if you’ve done something to violate your conscience, then maybe it’s time to admit that deep down you truly wanted to do so.”

“No, of course not,” Gilgamesh replied, as though the fact were obvious. “Nor will you,” he added, his tone making it sound as though it were an order. “Tell me, mongrel. Who are you?” he asked Axl, his glare centered on Axl’s forehead, his amused grin absent.
