They can talk high and low about it being too violent, I still think the whole Sphere of Truth thing was one of the dumbest edits 4Kids made. Couldn't they just make it non-lethal? Like a sleeping spell or something? That way they could still go for the whole 'Miscast' thing in the end to explain the damage. I'm a big fan of this episode in its original form and save the Musa-centric episode, the one they botched up the most.

/Still bitter.

I don't get the change. It makes sense to me what p-girl said, it didn't have to be changed completely.

@P-girl: Given the episode's plot, it probably made sense at the time to have Tecna to use a spell designed to expose Avalon's true nature. In any case, I never really put much credence in the "Tecna cast the spell wrong" theory, as (if nothing else) I would expect that they would have said something about it ASAP.

Moving on to 2x10 now, with another famous edit, but first, Bloom and Sky on the phone.

Unedited: The phone conversation at the start continues off the last episode, with Bloom being all gushy about Avalon showing her her family tree. Sky on the other hand seems to be having issues with Bloom spending her time with Avalon, and they argue over this. Ouch.

Edited: Bloom talks about Stella's latest idea for a date: a horse ride through a park. Sky on the other hand wants her to come over to RF the next day for serious discussion. Bloom thinks it's about Diaspro and they argue over this. Ouch.

At Alfea, it's time for class...

Unedited: Time for self-defense... your teacher: GRISELDA! Griz asks the class, "Now, you are up against an enemy much more powerful than you. This enemy has just cast a terribly destructive spell, what do you do?" Musa answers, "We combine powers!" The Griz says "Too late Musa! You've just been pulverized into oblivion." Stella: "Good thing you told us, 'cause otherwise I would have stood there before I finally get hit."

Edited: Magical cuisine seminar... er, make that Griselda's Master Combat class. Griz blah blahs about winning some gold medal and Musa is all "Gee, how long ago was that?" Griz: "It was 20 years ago, but I can still fight like a champion!" Stella complains that she was expecting to learn how to make a meal with a single spell.

Quite a few viewers didn't like that Griz outright tricked her students into attending her class in the edited, but it was pointed out to me that if Musa has the top grades (as mentioned in episode 15), one would have expected her to think of blocking the spell first, before attacking.

Bloom's boy trouble...

Unedited: At night in her room, Bloom says that she doesn't want to see Sky anymore, and thinks he has no reason to be jealous of her being with Avalon. Later, she, Tecna and Flora walk across the forest, as Bloom tells Tecna, "You and Timmy never argue, and you know he'll never let you down." (Remember this bit for later.)

Edited: At night in her room, Bloom suspects that Sky is going to break up with her. Later, she, Tecna and Flora walk across the forest, as Bloom is all, "Sky's sweet, sensitive, and nice, but who cares?"

Sky tries calling Bloom again:

Unedited: Sky gets, in a generic-female voice: "You may leave a message after the tone, but not if it's you Sky", prompting Sky to comment: "Magic makes automated messaging systems so frustrating." Sky goes out to the balcony and thinks "Girls are so selfish it's unreal."

Edited: Sky gets a recorded message from the Winx, and Sky leaves a message confirming that "I'll see you tomorrow" (when in fact, it's supposed to be today that he's meeting Bloom) Sky goes out to the balcony to practice what he's going to say to her.

RF gets attacked and stuff...

Unedited: A male voice makes the announcement.
Edited: A female voice makes the announcement.

Unedited: Bloom uses a fire-bubble to defend herself from the Trix's attacks.
Edited: Tecna tells Bloom to use a "Griselda bubble".

I imagined that some of the viewers would like the Griselda mention, and indeed, I got a response calling it keeping continuity.

The Trix take on Bloom, Tecna, and a couple Specialists:

Unedited: Everyone gets knocked out, so Icy can concentrate on the problem at hand.

Edited: Icy has Darcy cast a non-aggression spell on the others, so Icy can concentrate on the problem at hand.

Okay, three things. One, there's no sign of Darcy doing anything to anyone. Two, Timmy is still firing his gun later (and missing). And three, I personally think it makes what happens next more meaningful to their relationship...

Unedited: Tecna is shocked that Timmy is just letting the Trix walk past him with the Codex (even though he had his reasons: They had Gloomix, and it was three against one), and yells, "YOU'RE A COWARD!" Runs off.

Edited: Timmy just lets the Trix run (supposedly because of the non-aggression spell). Tecna decides to get help and runs off.

I thought that it was dramatic, and that this incident ultimately proves more meaningful to their relationship. One of the replies, however, thought it was out-of-character for Tecna to expect Timmy to shoot the Trix, and for her to just run away like that, and preferred Darcy's spell over OOC Tec.

On to that famous edit, and tons of virtual ink have been spilled on this particular change, preferring the edit over the original, because the unedited version was perceived as making Bloom even more of a Mary Sue:

Unedited: Sky gets zapped and Darcy comments on how Gloomix makes it almost boring. Later, Flora mentions no pulse, as the witches fly off. Bloom resurrects him. Bloom hugs Sky. Cue empty shot of RF. End.

Edited: Sky gets zapped, and Darcy comments that Icy just put Sky in a 100-year sleep... minimum. But not only does the edited version retains Flora mentioning no pulse, but also adds Bloom saying he isn't breathing. Bloom "resurrects" him. Sky proposes for her to be his girlfriend, and she accepts. Witches fly off. End.

I don't like that 'At the time' thinking that 4Kids did. Shows that they don't think ahead.

The only real difference in 2x11 was that they get the whole Tecna and Timmy issue out of the way first.

Unedited: In the middle of the episode, Timmy complains to Brandon about being locked out of Tecna's computer. Timmy thinks that it's because she doesn't think he's a hero (because of what happened last episode). Then Brandon gives tips on how to improve himself. We don't follow this up until episode 13.

Edited: We begin with Timmy complaining about Tecna blocking his IMs. Brandon suggests that Tecna might want to give him chase, adding tips on how to improve himself. We get the episode 13 scene somewhere in the middle.

I thought "Timmy is a coward" made for better conflict than "Timmy doesn't talk about anything else but computers", but one of the replies suggested it was really just an excuse for her not making the first move, and thought it made the relationship interesting. (I also got a lengthy explanation of why this is better than Flora/Helia's similar plotline.)

Next episode...

Unedited: We see Jared put a picture of Musa in his bag. Later, Jared arrives to go out with Musa. Jared tells Musa that he wants to talk with someone who's been through the simulator for an article he's writing. After they return, Stella asks Musa about every single detail of the date, and the guy. Bloom thinks she's being too nosy.

Edited: We hear Jared asking around for Riven, and seeing that no one's there, he puts a picture of Musa in his bag. Later, Jared arrives to go out with Musa. Jared tells Musa that Stella set him up with her. After they return, Stella asks Musa what she thinks about her matchmaking. Bloom thinks she's being too nosy.

I personally didn't like the change for Stella. The original shows how Stella is the resident gossipmonger, while the new version makes her seem even nosier than in the original. I did get a reply saying that this was something Stella would do, though...

Convergence homework. Bloom and Stella are the surprise package of the day, since they don't even have a project like the others, when it could be argued that they should have aced it easily.

Unedited: B/S couldn't figure it out, and Bloom ends with saying, "Fire and light are similar in more ways than one." (so as to day, "So, how come we don't even have a project like the very different Flora and Tecna do?") FG explains that they have to understand their powers first. In short, Bloom's powers are the Flame of Life (thereby explaining her healing powers in the last two episodes). Stella's powers are the Light of Vision (light that bursts forth to enlighten so others can understand).

Edited: B/S said that they were trying to converge their powers and then they got into a fight on how to do it. FG explains that they need to have perfect harmony blah blah blah.

Later, they're at the sim chamber.

Unedited: Stella is sure about succeeding in tomorrow's exam: "The five of us will make a megablast." However, there are six of them there. Layla is offended, and crying. Musa is mad that Stella implicitly left her out.

Edited: Stella cheerily proposes a slumber party to share friendship stories, but Layla is offended, and runs out of the simulator crying. Musa doesn't understand why, but she's mad at Stella all the same. Stella doesn't understand either.

On the one hand, Stella shouldn't be that stupid to forget that there are six of them and not five like last year. On the other, suddenly it doesn't make sense for Layla to run off like that. Then again, the next scene tries to fix it by suggesting that she doesn't have any friendship stories to share, because she hasn't had a friend in a long time... (Back in the day, I thought that Layla would be enthusiastic, not apprehensive, about the chance to make new friends...)

Slumber party:

Unedited: Stella has a flashback to 5th grade, when she had a crush on the most handsome prince at school, and when his girlfriend broke her leg, she was hoping that he'd dance with her at the prom instead. Instead, he was caring for her broken leg instead. After the hacking, Stella briefly discusses Riven with Musa ("I don't think that Riven would ever be interested in a tomboy like me" "Judging from the way he looks at you, or doesn't, he is"), followed by a nice scene of Layla dressed up as a warrior.

Edited: Stella has a flashback to 5th grade, when she had a crush on the most handsome prince at school, and she cast a spell to break his girlfriend's leg (she was only meaning to give her a breakout of acne). She was hoping that he'd dance with him at the prom instead. Instead, he was caring for her broken leg instead. After the hacking, we only have Stella's brief discussion with Musa, and not the bit with Layla as a warrior.

Exam time... and here comes Darcy?

Unedited: New!Pally fears that cutting power to the crystals in the sim would result in backlash that would cause them to lose their powers.

Edited: Here, the backlash would be even worse, because it would make the girls disappear altogether (along with everything else in the sim).

I imagined other viewers would like the danger of disappearing altogether, and think that losing their powers would be nothing new under the sun. Indeed, I got a reply wondering why it was so easy to lose your powers.

Unedited: Jared gets captured with rope.

Edited: Jared gets captured with some sort of magical hoop. (It should be noted that on the original broadcast, 4Kids forgot to replace the rope in one shot. It was corrected for reruns and the DVD, though.)

On to 2x13...

Unedited: Layla is being given orders. And more orders. And more. And then, all the people giving her orders turn into a bunch of Darkars. Cut to the bit with Piff.

Edited: Layla is being yelled at for dancing with peasants. Then she's being given orders to go to the ballroom and stuff. They do show one person having glowing eyes, but then cut out the Darkars.

I thought it made more sense to show the Darkars, since it was the most obvious thing making Layla have nightmares. However, I got a reply suggesting that she must have been having nightmares before the Darkar incident, because she was bonded to Piff and her sleeping powers.

Unedited: Stella and Layla are tired and want to cut class and things. Bloom and Flora are not interested. Musa comes in with mail. A Charmogram for Stella, a mystery letter for Flora and a letter from Bloom's earth parents. Meanwhile, she mentions that Tecna is having breakfast with Timmy right now (the scene used in 2x11 in the 4K version is shown later). After reading her letter, Bloom says, "I think I just got a great idea." Bloom explains in the next scene, on the bus in Gardenia, that Vanessa is testifying in court against the evil businessmen who burned down her shop (back in 1x13), and Bloom wants to give her support.

Edited: Stella and Layla want to cut class and go to earth with Bloom. Bloom says she needed special permission to go out of the realm. Blah blah, Flora is not interested in cutting class. Musa comes in with mail. In this case, it's invitations to the RF concert. After 4K cuts out the tail-end of the cafeteria scene, Bloom explains on the bus that she wants to talk to her mom about the search for her parents.

I was ambivalent about this change: they cut out a reference to 1x13, but insert a reference to the upcoming RF concert (2x15). I got a reply thinking the future reference was nice and the court thing was boring...

Unedited: Tune whines about some boy's dirty hands. Then Musa and co run into some cops. Layla decides to talk with them. Layla explains that they're from an out of town school, and when the cop asks if they have permission to be here, she replies, "Certainly sir, if you like we can give you our parents' numbers and you can check." The cop decides to get off their case. Stella congratulates Layla on her act, but Tune tells Stella that that wasn't an act. Tune adds: "She's a master of etiquette!"

Edited: Tune fears some boy. "Someone control that child!" Then Musa and co run into some cops. Layla speaks troll language at them. The cop realizes she's an out of towner, and gets off her case. Stella thinks it's awesome. End scene.

While I thought it was a bit illogical how the cop got off their case so easily instead of asking for Layla's parents' numbers, I still thought it seemed silly to replace Layla's perfectly-intelligible dialog with gobbledygook. However, I got a few reasons justifying the change in reply (such as the issue with the phone numbers).

(Bonus note: In some versions, when the cop first shows up, they show Layla in her regular outfit, rather than the one she's wearing on this trip. However, on other versions, she has the correct outfit. Picture.)

Unedited: At Bloom's house, Mom talks about testifying against the guys who burned her flower shop last season.

Edited: At Bloom's house, Mom talks about getting help on fixing up her flower shop.

4Kids cuts out another brief reference to 1x13:

Unedited: Bloom and Stella are outside of the club. Bloom sees the auras above the guys' heads, and immediately knows that Layla and Musa are in trouble.

Edited: Bloom and Stella are outside of the club. Bloom thinks that Layla and Musa are in trouble.

4K changes and/or removes the punks' weapons:

Unedited: One held a chain, two others held a bottle and a twig.

Edited: The bottle and twig are no more, and the chain is now a ribbon.

Punishment:

Unedited: The punishment makes more sense since all of them cut class without permission. Layla tells Flora that she hasn't had a friend since Anne moved out. We have a short flashback to Layla's earth trip. Flora and Layla then talk about Helia.

Edited: Because of the punishment, they'll be missing a potions fair. Flora talks to Layla about Helia, adding "I wanted to give him the letter, but in my realm, girls don't really make the first move. It's kind of a rule." We do not get the flashback.

A big complaint about this episode is an entire subplot that got cut out.

Unedited: There is a subplot in which Musa fights AND BEATS Stormy using a rain dance she learned from Layla.

Edited: This subplot is stripped down to its bare essentials (omitting the "learned from Layla" angle)... and then put into the next episode.

However, an even bigger complaint is related to this edit.

Unedited: Diaspro rants to Flora. She finds it unfair that Bloom of all people rescued her, but her biggest rant is that after all the hard work and all she's learned to be a good princess (unlike Bloom), it's only fair for her to marry a prince. Flora: "We understand." Chatta is all "But there are tons of princes out there."

Edited: Flora has convinced Diaspro to be a better leader. She won't punish people who dress below her standards. Flora's all "Um... okay." Where Chatta tells her that there are other princes around, she now agrees with her comment that hair accessories are essential.

When this episode was first aired, one of the viewers was very disappointed that they changed Diaspro's dialog, and figured that she would hold a grudge against Bloom. (Nevertheless, this viewer thought that the episode was a wasted opportunity overall, dialog change or not: it almost completely ignores the issue of Sky having to rescue his ex for a reference to the Gatchamen.)

Other minor edits, beginning with the opening scene...

Unedited: After a brief meaningless scene of Musa walking around while a few background fairies argue over pixie pets, Yoshinoya has outsourced the kidnapping to the Technoninjas instead of his own.

Edited: We skip Musa's scene (it's meaningless, after all). Yoshinoya, seeing that Diaspro's already been 'napped, decides to just write the ransom note.

Zing is tagging along with Sky and co.

Unedited: Zing wants to see the Technoninjas on Sky's planet.

Edited: Zing wants to bond with some fairy.

Some forest somewhere.

Unedited: Sky explains that Yoshinoya has always wanted to get rid of him (he IS after all a prince), so he switched identities with Brandon.

Edited: This angle of the switch is not pursued, since we have already explained the switch when it first came to light in 1x17.

I don't understand why the reason for the Sky, Brandon switch would change in reason or why they would not be more honest. As it would be a better reason than to see whats its like to be non royal

Huh. Would have expected to see comments on the Diaspro dialog change...

Anyways, moving on to 2x15. This whole episode was really switched around a lot, so I'll go by the order in which the events are shown in the original.

Unedited: (right at the start) Musa walks out on stage. Her voice is empty. The audience is robots. Spotlights go out. During the above, she narrates thusly: "Bloom thinks my voice is fantastic, and that the audience will cheer, dance, and sing along with me. She's convinced that tonight, the lights in my career will be switched on one after another."

Edited: (after a scene of Musa and Layla at RF, and before the 2nd commercial) We start with a shot of Musa sleeping. (This clip is actually from a S1 episode, the one with the nightmares.) We see the sequence above with a slight green tint, without Musa's narration, but instead with an announcement as she comes on stage, and with the sound of lone clapping added to the end as the spotlights are going out. Back to the S1 clip, Musa wakes up and she talks to Tecna (who, like Bloom, is actually absent from the original version, except in crowd scenes). Musa tells Tecna of her nightmare, mentioning that she thinks the one person clapping was her Mom.

Next!

Unedited: (after the above) Musa is on stage and she looks up in the sky. We see her at her mom's tomb placing flowers. We then see a scene at mom's first concert. (We'll revisit this tomb a few more times in the story, as well as the end scene.)

Edited: (after the 2nd commercial) Same as above, minus mom's first concert, but we only visit the tomb two times: here, and at the end. They do use a shot of tears falling on the grave from a different tomb visit, though.

Let's get this party started!

Unedited: (after the witches stick lipstick to Brandon) Layla dances in her bedroom for Musa and Francis (and a few pixies) to see. This leads straight into a nice sequence at the concert where she dances with Mirta and Francis and blows the crowd away.

Edited: (before Musa's nightmare) Layla dances in her bedroom for Musa and Francis (and a few pixies) to see. Musa says, "You're gonna blow them away!" Scene goes straight to the "nightmare" above.

I thought the dance would have been fantastic to retain, but I got another one of those "things must be cut out" replies, that also added that the dance was boring.

Rehearsals!

Unedited: (after Layla's dance) Musa is already rehearsing the song that she performs at the concert. Stella says she rehearsed it 20 times in a row already. Musa wants to practice the sax solo. Stella throws her the sax. "Are you nuts?! This saxophone costs a fortune!"

Edited: (after the witches stick lipstick to Brandon) Musa is considering different songs for her concert. After Stella thinks that the last song she just sung (a song from 1x18, and not the one she performs) was the one she should do, Musa thinks she should do one with a sax solo, so Stella throws her the sax. "Be a little more careful Stella, that is my dad's saxophone."

I imagine that some of the viewers would think it was more sentimental for Musa to keep her dad's sax, but we later on find out that he destroyed all the musical instruments in the house.

Dad shows up. More minor editing... (In both cases, after the rehearsals)

Unedited: First they discuss about Riven, and daddy insults him (this part is bookended with scenes at the tomb). Then they talk about Musa and music. Dad decides to transfer her.

Edited: The discussion is exclusively about Musa and music. Dad threatens to remove her. There are no scenes at the tomb.

Flashback time! (Follows the above)

Unedited: We head straight into a flashback of Musa's dad watching future mom's first show from the argument scene. Daddy pitches song to future mom. He hadn't written anything, so he had to write a song overnight. There is also a brief scene of dad counting banknotes, and seeing that he's only got a few, in between the shot of the parents' wedding, and a shot of another concert. Near the end of the flashback, we briefly see Layla and Musa standing on the RF balcony watching birds fly by, before we see the rest of the flashback.

Edited: The flashback is preceded with the scene of Layla and Musa watching the birds (that short snippet of Musa talking with Layla there also remains in the same spot, however, so we actually see that short snippet twice). The flashback to mom's first night is shown here, followed by most of the flashback as originally shown. Daddy hadn't actually finished the song he pitched, so he worked all night to finish it, and it was called "Magic in My Heart". The scene of dad counting his money is no longer there, however. The flashback no longer addresses financial trouble.

Also:

Unedited: Musa's dad is a young musician who married an opera singer. There are no mentions of them recording any albums, though...

Edited: Musa's dad is a prince who got disowned when he became a musician, who married an opera singer who rejected her classical training. They mention recording a few albums, including a "stripped down, almost classical" album.

I got a reply thinking that the 4K version made for a more interesting story than the "boring" struggling musicians of the original, but IMO, the fact they were struggling musicians plays into how Musa's mom died. After the flashback:

Unedited: "You know, I think your dad is just scared that if you follow a musical path, you'll end up like your mother." "Oh Layla. I want to be the fairy of music, and I don't want to lose either you guys or my dad." "That'll never happen Musa. Just give a great show and don't worry about anything else. Okay?" Insert two stills of Dad running through flowers with Musa, and Musa looking happy, with Musa's V/O on top, before time-lapsing into the evening. (Leads into the concert)

Edited: "Sounds like it was too painful for him to be around music, and based on what he said this afternoon... it still is." "What do I do? There's no way I can perform tomorrow. I don't want to leave Alfea, and I don't want to lose my friends!" "Then we'll cancel the show, and I'll extend my dance to fill up your time slot. We can work on it tonight, together. Everything's going to be okay, sweetie." We time-lapse into the evening. (Leads into the partial dance scene)

I thought that in the unedited, Musa's dad does seem to have a legitimate reason not to let her sing, while in the edited, it just seems like he's banning her for the heck of it. However, I received a reply that thought dad's reasons in both versions are illogical, saying that Musa was unlikely to die like her mother. I pointed out that it was the financial issues that troubled her father, but I got a reply saying that her parents would have had plenty of money.

Unedited: (after the above) Stella and Musa have their duet first (where she manages to knock over the mike stand a few times), then the RF show, then Musa's gig. Musa fights Stormy, and then we fade to the end scene after it's done.

Edited: (after the visit to the tomb) Coda leads off with the RF show, then Musa's gig, and then the Stormy fight. We then have the duet (without Stella knocking over the mike stand) before the end scene at the tomb.

Time for Musa to shine!

Unedited: Layla makes a point of two elf muses coming in to watch Musa perform. These two elf muses are the same two who start singing in the teachers' section. This is why Musa is freaking out backstage. After she comes out, Musa announces, "This is a song that I wrote, called 'A Sky Without Moon and Stars'."

Edited: The shot of the two elf muses coming in is shown right before the RF show. The backstage part is edited down a bit, with no mention of those two elf muses either here or anywhere in the episode. Musa announces "This is the first song my dad ever wrote for my mom."

I got a reply liking both songs, but adding that having Musa sings her father's song instead of her own was a good edit for being more poignant.

Alright, time for the Musa/Stormy fight!

Unedited: "Fire away Musa, but think what your sonic bombs will do to these people. Do you really want to hurt them???"

Edited: "Oh, we're not fighting Musa. You're surrendering, or I'm destroying your father RIGHT NOW!"

Unedited: There's a brief shot of the elf muses explaining that the power she gets from music will overwhelm the witch.

Edited: The shot of the elf muses is removed, and Riven is explaining it to the spectators instead.

The playlist:

Unedited: We have original songs for both the duet and Musa's song, and an original melody for Musa's fight.

Edited: We only have an original song for Musa, while the fight re-uses "Feels Like Magic" (1x02), and the duet is "This is the Beat" (a song used for Winx promos).

I got an opinion saying that the sentimental value for Musa's song makes up for the duet's recycled song.

Now that we've dealt with what was in the original, let's deal with what WASN'T in the original. The first couple minutes of the edited episode is actually clips cut from 2x14.

Edited: The show leads off with the Stormy/Musa battle, where Stormy is looking for the Codex with a spying spell. The battle is shown in one go in the US version, instead of as short snippets interspersed with the main plot. After this sequence, is a scene that originally comes before this big battle. Layla decides to show off her old-worldly dance (she doesn't identify it as a rain dance, as it's no longer relevant), and she explains that she used to sneak out of the palace and learn these dances from street performers (which annoys Tune a bit). It's implied that she never told her parents.

Unedited: Even with all they showed, they still left some stuff on the cutting room floor. There was a brief scene of Musa spotting the spying spell in the sky at Alfea, and Musa asking Palladium about it. Also, as mentioned above, the Layla scene actually comes before the big battle: Musa is nervous about the upcoming RF concert, but Layla decides to teach her a rain dance she could use (in the original episode, this immediately follows them learning about a rain dance). She explains that she used to learn these dances from farmers (prompting Tune to comment "How primitive"). And of course the dance she learned comes into play during the big battle.

I'm saving my comments on Diaspro for when they change 'I'm betting that peasant girl Bloom is getting all the attention now' to 'Why won't Sky love me?' in Season 3.

Also, the Musa episode....
Dear God, the Musa episode....
The prime example of how one, ill-tought-out changed line in one of the very first episodes can come back to BITE you.

This is one of my favorite episodes of winx club ever, I hate how much was changed. I much prefer the original duet song (I actually have it in my music library) but there are a few edits that I think I like better like the whole adding a little more drama to Musa's back story.

On to 2x16, where the girls go to earth...

Unedited: Jolly passes a random tarot reader. She thinks he's ancient, and not in a nice way.

Edited: Jolly passes a random tarot reader. She thinks he's an impostor.

Here's Mitzi...

Unedited: Just before Mitzi's arrival, the Winx meet a girl dressed like a nurse (replete with syringe), and after she comments, "You think she'd give you the time of day? As if she'd waste her time chatting up little girls like you", Bloom looks visibly teed off.

Edited: Nurse girl has had her syringe removed. She tells the Winx, "Don't take offense, the truth is I would probably would be in reform school too if my father wasn't famous and connected." Bloom being teed off has been removed.

Unedited: The CD the DJ was playing for entrance repeatedly skipped.

Edited: Listen to the song the DJ plays for the entrance. How ironic! And even more ironic is how the song he was supposed to play was "The Most Beautiful Girl in the World", which just adds to the "commentary".

I got a reply that thought the 4K song was better, and yeah, that sounds right... I also did get another response thinking that the "incidental" music turning out to be the DJ's skipping CD was funny, though...

Flora is being asked about their costumes.

Unedited: "How do you make the wings? They're so real!" "Um, it's a secret"

Edited: "Where did you get these costumes?" "Uh, Internet? </Timmy Turner>"

Okay, next...

Unedited: After Mitzi notes that Musa seems to be taking to herself, Musa answers the door, and takes a box of pumpkin cakes from a guy dressed as Spiderman. Musa tries one of the cakes, and clutches her tummy as if she had a tummyache. Freddy tells her she got the earwax-flavored one. Jolly (who Musa had been talking to, and remember 2x13 and how pixies are invisible) decides to prank Mitzi by making those cakes fly.

Edited: The cake scene is gone.

Incidentally, this is the 2nd time 4K's gotten rid of a character dressed as Spiderman: Zing was dressed as Spiderman in The Wrong Righters (for good measure, she also dressed as Doc Ock at one point). I got a reply talking about copyright issues concerning the costumes in the episode.

The "Fourth Witch" is heading over to haunt the Winx. But Stella is above Mitzi's prank...

Unedited: "Come on, look at the way she carries herself!" (With Stella knowing her fashion, this is kind of expected.)

Edited: Stella complains about the perfume Mitzi was wearing, just like Jolly did earlier.

I got a response preferring the perfume version, saying that posture shouldn't be a way to recognize someone.

It does make more sence recognising someone from smell of perfume over posture as Mitzi's posture was not that different, if at all to the others involved

Moving on to 2x17. This change sets the tone for many of the changes here (and I have to admit that I was unaware of it originally):

Unedited: FG sends the Winx to CT to protect the Codex, and Grif is offering them classes in the dark arts in return.
Edited: FG just sends them to CT to learn about the dark arts, telling them a story about a gnoll living with trolls.

Unedited: Bloom: "The witches helped us fight the Trix last year." Musa: "Don't forget that they also helped the Trix fight us!" (flashback to 1x09)
Edited: Bloom: "Witches do have some good qualities." Musa: "Is ganging up on a person and humilating them a good quality?" (flashback to 1x09)

We meet two teachers.

Unedited: The two teachers introduce themselves as Edilthrude and Zarathustra.

Edited: "What do you call a fairy without her wings?" "Dragon food." "And what do you call a fairy with her wings?" "Dragon food."

Classroom.

Unedited: Flora asks why they don't pair off in class. As everyone else laughs at the idea, Grif replies, "Team members can betray one another. So a witch trusts no one but herself." (which doesn't really make sense re: The Trix) Mirta finds her old room, but there's no reply from Lucy. Later, Musa and Bloom are doing good at the exercise. No reasons are given for Musa, but Grif comments that Bloom has summoned her dark energy so easily. Bloom mentions she had a bad week.

Edited: Flora says she would take a miserable abandoned kitten in as a pet. Everyone laughs at the idea, and Grif replies that its misery would allow her to cast skin-rot spells. Mirta finds her old room, but Lucy wants her to stay away. Later, Musa and Bloom are doing good at the exercise. Musa says she's using witches as her own despicable image, while Bloom's dark energy ball is darker than everyone else's (or even senior witches'): she mentions she had a bad week. 4Kids has changed Bloom's dark energy (Picture 1, Picture 2).

Given that they made a point of showing Bloom doing good at this exercise, AND (in the US) Grif mentioning "Bad things happen to those who can't control their dark energy", you'd think that the Dark Bloom incident would directly play on that.

Fast forward to later in the library.

Unedited: The Winx are trying to get the witches to help them protect the Codex. Tecna shows the witches a picture of the Trix from her PDA. Later... Lucy: "Rumor has it that Bloom gave the witches exactly what they wanted!" Stella: "How could you say that about her???" Tecna: "Um, technically she did." Stella: "Whose side are you on?!"

Edited: The Winx are trying to work with the witches on a class project. Tecna's picture of the Trix has been removed, and she talks about a kind of plant found in a certain valley instead. Later, Musa tries to point out the Winx saved them last semester, but Lucy replies: "Wouldn't have had to if Bloom hadn't given up the Dragonfire." Stella: "She kinda has a point." Tecna: "The Dragonfire was TAKEN!" (Stella repeats this point for Lucy)

Later still...

Unedited: After the Trix have come across Lucy, the teachers make comments on the Winx getting the witches to help. The Winx protest to Zara against the class they've been "set up" for, after finding out from Mirta that this class is part of dark magic class.
Edited: The teachers' scene has been removed, and the Winx are tricked into spelling themselves with a catfight spell.

I thought Dub Zara was being REALLY DUMB for tricking the Winx into falling out with each other when they're trying to save the universe, but (here's where that first change I was unaware of comes in), it was pointed out to me that if the teachers didn't know there was a threat, then they had free reign to do as they pleased with the Winx. (They would have known of the threat in the original, but not in the dub)

The Winx find out the Trix are already here, and have to come up with a plan quickly:

Unedited: Musa thinks that the witches might be hiding the Trix. (She doesn't trust them, see?)

Edited: Musa thinks of a plan where they pretend to know where the Codex is. (Everyone else's plans are the same as in the unedited, and when Stella runs off, Bloom suspects it's from the catfight spell)

Tecna looks for the Codex. She finds the heart on her map.

Unedited: Tecna indicates the heart, but does not make the assumption that the Codex is there. The Trix come in. Tecna is invoking her transformation, but Icy's spell precludes that from happening. Later, Zing, dressed as Skrat from Ice Age, shoves an acorn into the ice.

Edited: Tecna says, "All the energy flows to and from one place. The Codex must be there!" (This is with no rhyme or reason, and even SHE will admit it in the next ep.) The Trix come in. Tecna is about to attack, but Icy's Ice Coffin precludes the attack from happening. We do not see Skrat!Zing shove her acorn.

Continuing with 2x18...

Unedited: Griffin comes out and declares, "It seems you have found my personal sauna!" Darcy is all "Wait, this isn't the Codex Vault?" Tecna is shocked to have miscalculated... it makes no sense since she never said the Codex was in the heart, and yet this (and her later "Fairies and logic don't mix!" comment) would make it seem that she did.

Edited: Grif (on the Codex): "It's not here Icy, or anywhere where the likes of you will find it" Darcy: "The likes of US?" The miscaclulation reaction is cut out, even though it actually would make sense here.

After the girls take Bloom back to their CT dorm:

Unedited: Tecna blames herself for the incident.

Edited: Tecna tells everyone "What matters is that we have to work together."

One of the biggest plot problems is that except for Flora/Layla, there seems to be no rhyme or reason to the fairies' pairings.

Unedited: A teacher points this out, and Grif explains, "It will either strengthen their bond or destroy it. Either way, they'll learn something."

Edited: In the scene that they explain this originally, Grif explains that they're using the Winx as live bait to buy them time. But they never point out or mention why they're paired like so.

Neither version makes sense IMO. I did get a reply justifying Grif's reasoning in the original, but not an opinion on 4K cutting it out.

Stella isn't doing too well with Musa:

Unedited: In the cafeteria, Stella decides that they might miss the witches if they're both on the move, so she decides to just sit here. Musa does not like that "battle plan". The gist: "You're just going to sit there? What if they do come?" Stella: "Then I'd be well-rested and ready to fight." Musa: "You probably wouldn't even notice!"

Edited: In the cafeteria, Stella says to the gist of, "My musical taste is better than yours, and I'm sitting here until you admit it!" Musa: "We're trying to save the universe, and you want to argue over top fives?" (They continue to argue even after they get walled up!)

I'd argue that arguing over a battle plan is more plot-relevant. That said, I reckoned that some fans would actually prefer Musa and Stella arguing over frivolous things... and indeed, I got a reply suggesting it lightened the mood and was more in character for them.

2x19, and Tecna rants to Flora about Timmy:

Unedited: Timmy wants to talk to Tecna, but she leaves and walks into a hallway with Flora. T: "How can I like someone who behaves so... illogically?" F: "What exactly did he do?" T: "What he didn't do, you mean" F: "He's just shy, that's all" T: "Being shy is just an excuse. He's supposed to be a hero. If he wanted to do something, he'd do it!"

Edited: Timmy tells Tecna that he's doing some IT work for FG. After Tecna walks into the hallway with Flora, she complains that everyone treats her like a machine. After Flora points out that she doesn't, Tec then narrows it down to Timmy, and then continues her rant saying, "Why can't he come up to me and say 'I'm here because I like you and want to win your heart' or something? I do have one!" (There's a bit of a freeze frame while she says the above.)

At the end:

Unedited: After Bloom hugs Lockette, there's a scene in the archives where the girls are putting the books back. Transcript in spoiler box:
Spoiler!
Concorda: Excuse me for a moment everyone: Now that the location of the archive is no longer a secret, there is absolutely no reason whatsoever why we can't all help clean up this mess.
(Bloom puts away a book)
Flora: We knew it wasn't really you doing all that mean stuff.
Musa: Yeah, but I thought that Timmy thing was really funny.
Tecna: I understand that Timmy can be really irritating sometimes, but why would you hang him upside down?
Bloom: You'd have to ask Dark Bloom, because this one doesn't have a clue.
(Gang laughs)

Edited: This scene was cut out entirely, so it goes from Bloom hugging Lockette to LD getting the Codex piece.

Moving on to 2x20...

Unedited: The episode begins with FG having a short flashback to giving the pixie elders the jewelry in 2x07, and thinking that this may be their best hope. Flora (on LD taking over): "That would be so awful..." Stella, after imitating Flo's line: "Then do something about it instead of just standing there complaining."

Edited: We just skip to FG calling the Winx in. Flora: "I hope we can do it..." Stella, after imitating Flo's line: "C'mon Flora, with that kind of attitude, we might as well just give up."

Subplot involving Palladium and Avalon.

Unedited: Palladium tells Livy about the sick Avalon and wants her to go back to Alfea to have WizGiz prepare the lab, and Livy mentions there is a universal antidote. The "Sora Alga" grows in Pixie Village. Livy is about to go off when Palladium tells Livy that she's forbidden from heading the Pixie Village, but then he thinks that since Darkar is focusing on the Winx, he decides to send her on her way, and tells her to keep a low profile. She promises to be back in "Two shakes of a snake's tail. ... Hold it, I mean to say two shakes of a shark's tail? ... Or, um, is it a pig's tail?" HEH!!

Edited: Palladium wants an antidote from the Pixie Village. Palladium tells Livy: "I know you're not supposed to go there, but this is very grave." Livy is about to go off when Palladium tells Livy that he hasn't told her yet what it is. He tells her it's the essence of the Flower of Life, and before she goes off says, "Understood, you can count on me sir... I should have said 'Understood, you can count on me Prof.'... or uh, Professor?"

Moving on to the Resort Realm eps now, starting with 2x20: While the other Winx are playing volleyball, Layla is gathering firewood, while Stella is just sitting on a mat.

Unedited: The first thing Stella asks Layla is why she isn't playing... "It's right up your alley..."

Edited: The first thing Stella asks Layla is when they're going to the hotel.

Night time. Sky is guarding the tent while talking with Bloom.

Unedited: He exposits to the tone of, "There are noises out here, and it's too bad because it would have been romantic out here tonight." And he delivers it in a way that makes me think of his "We'd implode" line from 2x05 (dub).

Edited: He explains stuff about some animals guarding their mates through the night. I got a reply saying how romantic that comment was.

Layla finds out about the divorce of Stella's parents and later, Stella wants to talk with Layla.

Unedited: Layla wants Stella to send a postcard to her parents. Stella says, "Give me a few minutes..." Bloom tells Layla about her parents' divorce. Later, Layla cries in the forest. Gist: "I didn't know that Stella's parents were divorced. I don't know anything about them at all!" Bloom is preparing the fashion show that Stella had suggested the day before, and is surprised that she herself won't be participating.

Edited: Layla wants Stella to send a postcard to her parents. Stella is upfront about her situation: "It's postcards Layla. My parents are separated." Bloom adds that it's been tough for her the last few years. Later, Layla cries in the forest: "I'm just no good with friendships." Later, Bloom is surprised that Stella doesn't want to do a makeover on Tecna (Stella never suggests the fashion show in this version), as Stella goes off to find Layla.

Stella gets her Charmix:

Unedited: Stella and Layla comment that the Charmix looks like a handheld mirror. Stella says, "My Charmix knows me well!" We get both a regular transformation followed by a Charmix transformation, and her attacks seem to be mirror-based.

Edited: There are no comments about the Charmix looking like a mirror, and Stella now says, "I totally got a Charmix!" We go into the Winx-to-Charmix transformation straight from her casuals.

I got a reply that liked the mirror bit and wished that the edited would have left it in.

2x21, and the biggest edits in this episode both tie in to how they've changed why Tecna didn't like Timmy. Timmy says he has a plan...

Unedited: We pan over to a pouty Tecna asking Digit "Given his past performance, what are the odds of that being true?!" Brandon: "When Timmy's got tactics, the Specialists listen."

Edited: We briefly pan over to a pouty Tecna but immediately jumpcut to the explanation of this plan.

I've read summaries suggesting that Timmy must have said something different in Italian for Tecna to react like that. In fact, he does say the same thing; it's Tecna's reaction being curtailed (and the changes in 2x10) that makes it look random.

At the end:

Unedited: Tecna praises about how Timmy helped assemble the Specialists' plan together and stuff. And she then says, "I never liked not liking you!" Timmy tells her "Did you know that sentence sounded illogical?"

Edited: This is Tecna's quote directly from the dub... "I feel like I almost lost you today and it made me realize I've been mad at you 'cause you wouldn't make the first move, but really it's just me being scared of stepping up myself and telling you how much I absolutely adore you." (The shot lasts longer than in the unedited, and an animation of tears dripping has been added) Timmy tells her "You're crying but you're not sad... that's illogical."

Somewhere in the middle...

Unedited: Layla walks into a fog bank. She collapses. Later, she gets up. She sees a picture of Piff and Anne. She walks into a cave on this.

Edited: We just see Layla walking into the cave.

Also... the Trix have cornered Sky and Timmy.

Unedited: They decide to all attack at once, while saying what their powers are.

Edited: They asking how the Specs they want to go, and say what their powers are.

I thought someone would reply that the edited makes the witches look more badass (someone did, and in fact, it was apparently among that viewer's favorite parts of the episode), but I kind of prefer the unedited's more pragmatic approach.

Honestly they ruin Winx Club from season 1 to 3. That's why 4Kids licensed for Winx have been revoke. Giving to license to Nick who respect Rai original story

But Winx are not the only series by 4Kids
