I've come to realise that I adore yet another music genre. Altough I don't know it's name, it's typically Dutch, most of the time sung by an elderly man, and about typical Dutch things, and the tone is semi-sad, but with a hint of positivity. For example, there's this Dutch commercial for enviroment-friendly electricity, and it show's Holland's old and new Struggles with the sea (Old: The 'Watersnoodramp', when a big part of a region called 'Zeeland' was flooded. New: The rain, hail and other enviromental changes, highlighting the news of a pack of horses being stranded for days because of this.), and it's all set to this marvelous song about just that: Holland's love/hate relation with the sea. The lyrics are something like this: We vechten, en omhelzen (We fight, and embrace) Je Vijand is je Vriend (Your enemy is your friend.) Hij kan so lief, onschuldig zijn (He can be sweet and Innocent.) Maar soms zo nietsontziend (But sometimes malovelent.)
Another awesome one comes from YET another commercial, this one for cheese, and the song is about our capitol, Amsterdam.
Je kan er langs de grachten lopen (You can walk besides the canals.) Zou je eigenlijk wel eens moeten doen. (You should do it sometimes.) ---- Je bent er vogelvrij (You're as free as a bird.) Omdat er alles kan (Because everything is possible) In ieder mensenhart (In the heart of every human) Daar vind je Amsterdam (There'll you find Amsterdam)
...... Geez, I choke up just remembering these songs, so bittersweet, so tearjerkingly beautiful.
