Magix Club's Forum _ 4Kids Discussion _ Thoughts on 4Kids' edits

Posted by: SpiderBraids Jul 1 2012, 6:40 AM

I plan to post notes and opinions on various changes that 4Kids made to the show in this topic (in episode order). It should be noted that I'm also the guy behind the "Winx Club: Cut It Out" website, so I'll have plenty to say about the changes.

That information would be most interesting

Posted by: GuardianOfEarth Jul 1 2012, 1:54 PM

Indeed. Looking forward to it.

Posted by: P-girl Jul 1 2012, 2:17 PM

I'm also looking forward to it. I only know the really famous ones (Stormy's panties. Musa's backstory. Bloom's powers to bring people back from the death....) so I'm curious.

This'll be interesting :) I'd also love to know things from RAI which weren't shown in 4Kids (4Kids is the version I watch mostly so I knnow that one the most, although I am buying the RAI DVD's now)

Can't wait!

Okay, so here we go. I will start with the episode that started it all, "It Feels Like Magic", which had a big chunk at the beginning moved to the 2nd segment:

Unedited: Morning. Mom wakes Bloom up. Bloom quickly gets dressed. Bloom realizes she doesn't have school so she lies back on her bed. Mom sees the fairy book on the floor, and notes how she likes reading it, and then suggests that Bloom work at her shop.

Downstairs. Dad reads the paper. Bloom doesn't want to work at Mom's shop. She'd rather go somewhere fun with her friends. Dad says she can go wherever she wants when she's older. Bloom says she's already 16. Dad says that in a few weeks, they're going to have a beach vacation like they do every year, but Bloom says her friends go on holidays by themselves. Dad has a surprise.

Outside. A standard bicycle waits for Bloom. Bloom takes it unenthusiastically. Mom tells Dad that Bloom was likely expecting a scooter, but Dad says they're dangerous, and expensive. Mom suggests saving up some money to buy one.

Bloom is disappointed at the bike. Actually, she's more disappointed with her cheap dad for giving her just a bike, as she runs into Mitzi. Mitzi blah blahs about Bloom's usual beach trip, and says she'll be sending her a postcard from where she's vacationing. And then Mitzi yells at some guys handling her brand new scooter. Bloom bikes off to...

The park. She settles down for an apple, and then Kiko runs back screaming, before leading her straight to the battle between Stella and Knut. Blah blah blah. Bloom yells at Knut. Knut sends his minions after her and she creates a force-field, and she's not sure how it happened either. After giving another minion the stick, Knut grabs her and she begins to glow with fire, and it knocks Knut out. Stella picks up her scepter. More battling, blah blah blah, minion rips her pants, Knut teleports off, Stella faints, blah blah blah.

Edited: Bloom bikes off to the park. She settles down for an apple, and then Kiko runs back screaming, before leading her straight to the battle between Stella and Knut. Blah blah blah. Bloom yells at Knut. Knut grabs her and she begins to glow with fire, and it knocks Knut out. His minions comes after her and she creates a force-field, and she's not sure how it happened either. Morning. Mom sees the fairy book on the floor, and notes how she likes reading it. As soon as she mentions the girl downstairs and Bloom realizes that her Stella thing wasn't just another dream of hers, Bloom wakes up and quickly gets dressed.

Downstairs. Dad reads the paper. Blah blah blah, dad talks about how she used to play fairies when she was young. Bloom goes off to buy groceries as an alternate to cleaning the garage (4Kids cuts out Bloom getting the bike).

Biking around, Bloom doesn't notice anything magic at all today. Bloom runs into Mitzi. Mitzi blah blah blahs about how Bloom should throw away that bike, and yells at guys handling her brand new scooter. Bloom leaves.

I suspect that this was so that the show could begin with a fight scene, and I was told that it made sense for 4Kids to get the viewers' attention by having the fight first. OTOH, in one of my comparison videos, I pointed out that it creates a new continuity error, involving Bloom's pants going back to being unripped, and then back to being ripped again.

Another change worth noting is when Stella tells Bloom about Alfea with the postcard:

Unedited: Just a brief explanation of Alfea, nothing special here...

Edited: Instead of talking about just Alfea, Stella also mentions the other schools in the realm, with appropriate footage of the schools added in. She's even invited the RF guys over to help Bloom decide.

Posted by: SpiderBraids Jul 21 2012, 1:56 AM

Moving on to the second episode "More Than High School", I begin with the pep talks used in both versions.

Unedited: (Griz) This school will be your home for the next five years. But this home can cease to be yours at any moment. The rules of this institution are based on discipline. Disregard these rules and I'll personally escort you to the front gate! This is not a magician's school. You're not here to learn hocus-pocus. Consequently, you may not use your powers in the hallways or other common areas. (counts to three on her fingers) In fact, the only place you may display your powers is in your classroom under your teacher's supervision. Is that clear Princess Stella? (Show lab damage) Thanks to you and your antics the potion laboratory will not be accessible until next month at the earliest. Now I think you know what not to do if you wish to stay... huh? (adjusts glasses) [B: You did that? S: So? My father paid for all the damages.]

(The other teachers make their grand entrance. Left to right, WizGiz, Palladium, FG, DuFour. FG: Sorry I'm late, I hope you'll excuse me.)

(FG and company meet the Griz) Ladies, here comes your headmistress. Attention!

(FG takes over from here) Oh really, there's no need to be so stodgy, I hope Ms. Griselda hasn't frightened you too much. Welcome to Alfea. The best fairy school in the whole of Magix. Mind you, it's also the only one. (walking up the stairs to the building) Come in ladies!

(Opens the door to the building) Here we are! And so we begin our orientation session, by the end of which we should all know each other better. Becoming a fairy is hard work, but I know that everyone here can do it. Keep in mind that the teachers and I are always here to help you. Okay, enough with the boring stuff, feel free to explore your surroundings. But be very careful. There are dangers lurking about. [S: "Stay away from the witches of Cloud Tower." Listen, that's what's coming up.] (Indeed it does...) Stay away from the witches of Cloud Tower. [The Griz: Alright, speeches are over, everyone's dismissed, you're free 'til dinnertime.] Good luck everybody, I'll see you tomorrow. Oh, and classes start at eight o'clock sharp, do be punctual. (Stella then gives an explanation about the schools in the realm)

Edited: (Griz) First things first, our code of behavior! The first rule is: you must follow all the rules in the code of behavior! (as she counts to three on her fingers) If you break the rules once, you will be turned into a frog. If you break the rules twice, your magic privileges will be suspended, and if you break the rules three times, you will be expelled. Isn't that right, Ms. Stella? (Show lab damage) Last year she destroyed the potions laboratory with an unauthorized magic spell. This brings me to the 2nd rule. (Back to the Griz) No unsupervised magic at any time! (adjusts glasses, makes "clearing throat" sound) [B: You really did that? S: I was trying to create a new shade of pink!] We believe that discipline's the only way to prepare you for the world out there! Which brings me to the 3rd rule: Stay away from the witches of Cloud Tower no matter what! We don't have a punishment for that, since nothing we could do would be as terrible as what they'll do to you if they catch you there. (It should be noted that the footage has been re-arranged quite a bit, and ends with a shot of CT, which was not there in the original)

(After a commercial, we cut straight to FG opening the doors and entering the building with the students... she takes over from here) Welcome all! I'm Ms. Faragonda, your head-mistress. I'm an Alfea alumna and a former fairy godmother. This year we have quite a wonderful class. Some of you will fight evil, others will grant wishes and many are princesses that will take over your realms. Each of you is unique. You all have different sources of power and diverse origins. But our mission is the same: To help each of you become the very best you can be [Stella mocks this line and adds: "She really loves saying that"]. Naturally we expect you to do your best at all times. [Griz: Now ladies! It's time to check into your dormitories and meet your roommates!] Remember everyone! Let's make this a great year! Oh, and of course use every opportunity to connect to your Winx! (Since they've already talked about the schools last ep, Stella then explains what Winx is)

I dunno, I'm partial to grand entrances myself.

Later in the dorm, there's much less of a culture clash in the edited version:

Unedited:
Stella: Speaking of food... whattaya say we eat out tonight? It'll be our way of celebrating the new school year.
Flora: Great idea. That'll give us a chance to get to know one another.
Bloom: Anyone for pizza?
Musa: What's "pizza"?
Flora: Yeah, what is it?
Bloom: It's the national dish of Callisto, more or less. (cut to the Griz watching them leave Alfea, then fade to bus)

Edited:
S: I have a brilliant idea. Whattaya say we get out here and go downtown for a pizza?
F: Great idea. Downtown Magix is so much fun!
B: What is it like?
M: It's FRESH!
F: You've never been???
B: No, but if we can grab a slice, I'm so there! (fade straight to bus)

Man, you sure take a lot of effort into this. Good job !

For the 3rd episode, the edited version loses about a minute and a half from the first few scenes, most importantly, a conversation between Bloom, Stella and Flora in the bedroom:

Unedited: Bloom tries hair transformation again, and her hair spikes up. Stella: "You're not paying attention! You're not concentrating hard enough!" Flora tells them that at least something happened, and Stella starts laughing. Flora walks over and sits next to Bloom on the bed. The three of them have a http://s9.photobucket.com/albums/a77/Rover_Wow/wccuts/%5daction=view&current=1x03-dorm.jpg about what's brought them to Alfea. The next day, Bloom and Flora are late for breakfast and have to http://s9.photobucket.com/albums/a77/Rover_Wow/wccuts/%5daction=view&current=1x03-cafeteria.jpg. Tecna is telling Bloom to watch out for the Griz, when FG announces the dance.

Edited: Bloom tries hair transformation again (we're told she was the only one who couldn't do it in class). Her hair spikes up. Stella: "You're a bigger project than I thought!" Fade to the cafeteria where Bloom continues whining about how hard it is, and Tecna is telling her that the first semester is always hard, when FG informs them about the school dance.

To me, the bedroom scene is more meaningful in the unedited version. As edited, it seems just a cheap gag. During my early days in the fandom, I was constantly being told that 4Kids had to make cuts for time in order to show Winx, and while I can see unimportant bits of scenes being trimmed for time, it raises the question on where the line should be drawn...

After the announcement of the dance (and a scene at CT), another cut:

Unedited: we see the Winx http://s9.photobucket.com/albums/a77/Rover_Wow/wccuts/?action=view&current=1x03-hallway2.jpg talking about what they're going to do for the dance. Flora: Put up decorations. Musa: Take care of music. Stella: Get a dress. Show Stella showing her dress.
Edited: We cut straight to Stella showing her dress.

And now, a positive change by 4Kids, as Bloom tries to find a dress for the dance.

Unedited: Bloom has picked a dress for the school dance. It's very expensive, but Stella can pay for it with her card. Flora tells her not to, however: "You might offend her."

Edited: Bloom has picked a dress for the school dance. It's very expensive. Stella's card has been maxed out, so forget about Stella paying for it.

I usually try to defend the original, but there are lines I draw. The latter situation just seems more sensible.

Bloom tries to cut her dress:

Unedited: Bloom tries to look for scissors. Failing that, she tries using her fire powers to cut the dress. She hears something from outside, so she goes out to the balcony and sees the RF boys coming, and then she suddenly has to put out a fire on her dress icon_biggrin.gif before going through the hall in search of scissors.

Edited: We only see Bloom trying to find scissors, and then Bloom going out to the balcony to see the RF boys coming in.

Later, Bloom runs into the Trix trying to steal Stella's ring...

Unedited:
(The Trix land behind Bloom. Bloom drops Stella's ring box and starts walking backwards)
Bloom: Uh-oh, this isn't good, where are the others?
(Cut to Flora looking out the window from the ballroom)
Flora: Poor Bloom! The witches have got her cornered!
(Pull back from the ballroom window to a wide shot of Bloom and the Trix. Cut back inside, Flora runs to the others)
Flora: Bloom is in trouble!
Faragonda: Young ladies. It's time to offer(?) our guests. Come and join the others, and Musa will play something for us.
(Cue reaction, cut back to Bloom outside)

Edited:
(The Trix land behind Bloom. Cut to black. Fade to inside the ballroom where Flora joins the others.)
F: This prince asked me to dance...
FG: Young ladies. We just had a great idea! Princess Musa should perform a hip-hop number for our guests!
(Cue reaction, cut back to Bloom outside)

Personally, the edited version gives me the impression that the others didn't really care about Bloom at all. As for Musa as a princess, I can imagine 4Kids thought that it would be interesting for the least princess-y girl of the group to be one, and I guess you don't get much further from princess than low blue jeans and a love for hip-hop (the 4Kids dub peppers her dialog with hip-hop-isms, an aspect that many viewers apparently disliked).

After Bloom returns to the dance...

Unedited: Flora explains how they switched the ring, and we fade out to Icy discovering the duck in her egg.
Edited: These scenes are switched, so after Icy discovers the duck in her egg (and her reaction has been cut out), Flora provides a quick recap of what happened at the party to Bloom.

I think that it sucks that 4kids edited out scenes like the bedroom one where they talk about how they got to alfea. I personally like learning about the backstories of the characters and wish I would have seen that when first watching the show. Like you said, it would have made it a lot more meaningful.

Today, we deal with Bloom naming the group The Winx Club. The content of the scene wasn't significantly different (except for a W.i.t.c.h. reference in the 4Kids version), but the main issue is where it happened.

Unedited: Happens at the end of 1x02 (1x04 ends with Bloom checking on Stella in her room, and she's mumbling about Fake!Sky in her sleep).

Edited: Happens at the end of 1x04 (1x02 ends after FG and the Griz send the girls back to the dorm, and the scene with Stella in the bedroom is missing altogether).

I got a response suggesting that the later placement is better, but I'd like to see your opinions.

For that matter, there's another issue of the name itself.

Unedited: She makes the name up randomly.
Tecna: Yes, but what does Winx mean???
Bloom: Nothing, just "Winx".

Edited: The term "Winx" is the show's supposedly hip term for magic (I know, the edited 1x02 has its own explanation but whatever).
Tecna: So, our name is "Winx" then?
Bloom: Better. We're the "Winx Club".

Personally, I think it makes sense that the group has a unique identifier for themselves, and it's more meaningful at the end of the season when FG says "I've decided to renew the concept of the modern fairy with a new word: Winx." Most everyone else seemed to prefer Winx to have some sort of (rather generic) meaning, though... (and it's also been pointed out that the comic has a different explanation for the name)

Episode 5, and we begin with the girls peeling potatoes in the kitchen.

Unedited:
Bloom: Ah, I hate doing kitchen duties. I just don't get it...
Musa: What is it that you don't get, Bloom?
Bloom (as Kiko peels and eats a whole potato icon_biggrin.gif): Why a school for fairies can't use magic to cook dinner? It doesn't make sense. (she throws off her apron and goes next to the door) All you've got to do is wave the magic wand, snap your fingers, wiggle your nose a couple of times and voila! Everything's ready without any effort.
(Master Sfoglia, the chef, barges in.)
Chef: However, home-cooked meals taste a lot better, and are much healthier.
(Chef Guy then goes ahead and complains that Musa's taking off too much skin from the spuds for the side dish, and then tells them not to forget to flip the omelettes cooking on the stove right now. Yada yada yada. Egg on face!)
Chef: I'll have a word with the headmistress about giving you a permanent exemption from kitchen duties! (wipes face) You young fairies cause more trouble than help! Now I must clean up before dinnertime, so keep an eye on the roast.
(Flora does this. Yada yada yada, Stella's date, blah. The roast is on fire, and everyone runs to the kitchen, where the Griz puts out the fire. Foam on face!)
Griz: Get back to work immediately, you hear me?! Dinner must not be delayed! Do your best, girls!
Bloom: Bread and cheese okay for you guys, hmm?
(Later that night, Flora and Bloom enter their room together, Flora goes to bed, and Kiko tucks her in. In the common area...)
Musa: Anyway, I wanna go out too, with or without a date.
Bloom (coming out of her room): Well... it certainly would be better if someone asked us out.
Tecna: I've not been programmed for dating.
Bloom: You should try it anyway. It's fun!
Tecna: What's fun about dating? It is an experience of irrelevant value!
Bloom: You've nothing to lose then!
Musa: Yeah, why don't you ask Timmy out?
Tecna (ignoring them): Good night girls, I'm going to switch myself off now!
(Bloom and Musa giggle, and then they yawn.)

Edited:
B: You know what? I'll feel like a dork if this doesn't work.
M: Well, where'd you find the formula?
B (while Kiko eats the potato): It was in Vanity Fairy's new self improvement guide, so I mean, it should work. (she throws off her apron and goes next to the door) A thousand potatoes, a bushel of flipweed, a magic backflip, and you're making good decisions all the next day. It said good judgment is guaranteed.
(Maestro barges in, and complains about the Winx using the kitchen [the potions lab was signed out], the girls using his potatoes for their project, and complains about the omelettes: they were just making their own dinner. Yada yada yada. Egg on face!)
Maestro: Normally I would find this funny, but as I am the one with egg on my face, I do not laugh. (wipes face) Now wrap this project up. You might want to be done by the time the headmistress gets here.
(Flora checks on roast flipweed. Blah blah blah, Stella's date, blah. Flipweed's on fire. The sequence of the girls running to the kitchen has http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a77/Rover_Wow/wccuts/1x05-added.jpg. Griz puts out fire. Foam on face!)
Griz: Since you're having such a good time in the kitchen, you can spend the rest of the night here... cooking dinner for the entire school!
(M: "She didn't say that while we're here...")
B: ...we couldn't still finish the potion, hmm?
(Insert scene of witches talking about their trap. Back at Alfea... cut straight to the common area where Musa is)
M: And what is Riven's problem??? Why doesn't he ask me out like Sky did Stella? (T: Wot???) I'm just saying. Well???
B (coming out of her room): I've taken the potion, and it should start working in the morning.
T: Musa wants to go out with Riven!
B: But she was so mega-rude last week!
T: Well, I did read that some boys will act rude simply because they are crushing.
B: Yeah, that could be it.
M: So you think I should call him???
T: Ask tomorrow, when her good judgment spell kicks in.
(Bloom and Musa giggle. Jump cut to the next day.)

I can understand why 4Kids removes things for time and such. But here, 4K inserts a scene from a different episode, and uses it to reveal a key plot point to boot. Surely someone would appreciate not knowing Stella was captured until later at the "restaurant"...

The next day, "Stella" asks Bloom where her ring is.

Unedited: Bloom tells "Stella" to calm down (paraphrase: "Calm down, I don't recognize you"). Instead, "Stella" just attacks her.

Edited: Bloom reminds "Stella" that she just gave it to her last night ("I don't have to tell you, I've got it. You gave it to me last night, you said keep an eye on it"). "Stella" then tries attacking her to get her to give her the ring.

It doesn't make sense for "Stella" to react that way in the dub, and I'm not the only one who thinks this.

The girls decide to question Fake!Sky about last night's date... turns out he never had any plans for a date:

Unedited: Fake!Sky was busy exercising until night
Edited: Fake!Sky was punished for the troll's escape last week

All I'm going to say is: As edited, it makes more sense to attach current events to previous ones.

So, Bloom has just given Stella's ring to the witches. At the bridge near the "restaurant"...

Unedited: Tecna does not take Bloom's decision well at all.
Tecna: We could have beaten them... it was four-on-four.
Bloom: A battle could have made things worse. To me, the exchange was the best possible option bar none.
Tecna: But who are you to decide for all of us??? You're not the boss!!!
Flora: Tecna, I would have done the same thing.
(brief pause)
Bloom: They might have scored a goal, but the game isn't over yet.
Stella: What are you talking about???
Bloom: What??? You don't have soccer on your planets?
Flora: What's soccer???
Bloom: Come, I'll show you. It's a game you play with a ball. Let's take this for example (indicating can on ground).
Tecna: That's not a ball.
Stella: It's just an example, Tecna...
Bloom: Now... it goes like this. (grunts as she kicks the can)

Edited: Everyone defends Bloom's decision just fine (even though Tec thought it was a four-on-three battle), and Stella would have loved to have had some of that potion Bloom took the other night...
T: Then you might have known not to go out on a date???
B: Hey, you know what? Last night I almost forgot to mix in the mandrake beet. Who knows what would have happened???
T: No wait! You're supposed to mix in a mandrake root, not a beet!!!
F: Wait, she got the potion wrong? You know what this means???
B: I sure do Flora. This totally rules!!!
S: Bloom, what are you talking about???
B: I'm a natural good decision maker!
F: You didn't need the potion. Just thinking you took it gave you confidence.
B: You know girls? The witches may have scored a goal, but they haven't won the game.
T: What game?
S: It's an expression, Tecna...
B: Don't worry. (S: Huh?) We're gonna get that ring back! (kicks the soda can on the grass)

I didn't like the addition of the potion to the plot, for two reasons: 1) Bloom doesn't always make the best decisions (next episode, for instance), and 2) We don't actually see the potion being mixed or taken.

Posted by: mightymarty2 Jul 26 2012, 7:54 AM

Thanks for all the information. Its a shame they also used the word soccer not football. As it just feels like an attempt to push it in America

Posted by: Abby Jul 27 2012, 4:51 AM

I also found it weird that they used the word soccer in the unedited version. I would have expected that in the 4kids (american wording) one. I also agree about the whole potion thing. I remember when I first saw that episode and being annoyed because they never showed them finishing the potion or taking it, and like you said Bloom doesn't always make great decisions.

Posted by: SpiderBraids Jul 27 2012, 4:38 PM

Two episodes in a row now, starting with three quick edits from episode 6... First, Faragonda talks to Bloom about the great dragon:

Unedited: FG knows about the dragon and stuff, nothing special here...

Edited: There's some discussion about a restricted book on the dragon that only showed a single paragraph to Bloom, but showed FG two whole chapters once, which is how she learned about the dragon stuff.

Second, the Winx arrive at CT.

Unedited: Bloom thinks they need a map, and then she hears Darcy yelling at Knut, so they don't need a map to know where the Trix's room is.

Edited: Tecna has a map of CT loaded. So, she knows where the Trix's room is. (We do not hear Darcy yelling at Knut.)

I dunno, the unedited seems funnier. Other replies seemed to agree.

Third up is when FG decides to punish the Winx by revoking their powers, even though she's fairly sure they have a relevant excuse (the Griz doesn't think so, though).

Unedited: Stella says something like, "You wouldn't do that, would you?" FG: "There are few things I wouldn't do, and this isn't one of them."

Edited: Stella insists that the witches started it (which is what Bloom was trying to do earlier), but FG cuts her off and revokes their powers.

You'd think that Stella would try to defend herself from punishment than challenge the headmistress...

Moving on to episode 7, with Lady Griffin at the cafeteria after the Trix's spat with Mirta.

Unedited: She announces that there will be no entertainment period this evening. Icy decides to trash Alfea while they're at their little concert to get even with the Winx for trespassing. (They then later decide to search for the Dragonfire because Icy has a suspicion...)

Edited: She announces that Alfea's concert has pushed their benefit to a lesser venue. Hearing about the concert, Icy decides to go over to Alfea to trash the school.

I thought it made more sense for Icy to find out about the concert from Griffin than for her to just know about it, but someone else replied that it made no difference. HUH.

This one I heard about:

Unedited: There's a shot of Riven carrying Musa after the minotaur attack.

Edited: That shot has been cut out.

Fast forward to the end for the other edit:

Unedited: FG thinks of the Winx, and says to herself... "Tomorrow, the roses will bloom. Who knows? One day you might also blossom."
Edited: FG thinks about the Dragonfire.

Posted by: SpiderBraids Jul 29 2012, 6:10 AM

Another two-in-one post, starting with Episode 8. So, the Trix want to make Riven have a hoverbike crash, and blame Bloom for it...

Unedited: Icy and Stormy are somewhat not entertained at the idea of Darcy being concerned for Riven. (They then walk off in disgust when Darcy romances him.)

Edited: Icy and Stormy want Darcy to romance Riven as part of the plan. Unlike in the original, she does this with a spell, rather than relying on Riven not trusting Bloom. (In the original, one gets the impression that the spell is for healing Riven.)

Quite a few US viewers preferred the edited version where the plan is concerned, and I suppose I can't really disagree with that... As for Darcy's romance spell (or lack thereof), I got replies preferring both versions.

Moving on to episode 9, we start with Stella and Flora watching Bloom sleeping...

Unedited: http://s9.photobucket.com/albums/a77/Rover_Wow/wccuts/?action=view&current=1x09-StellaFlora.jpg and tells her to go check out Bloom. Bloom is transforming in her sleep, and Flora and Stella find it very weird. http://s9.photobucket.com/albums/a77/Rover_Wow/wccuts/?action=view&current=1x09-StellaFlora2.jpg, Stella starts to get pretty loud and wakes Bloom up from her sleep. (Error: We see Bloom under her blanket in the wide shot, then we see her whole body transforming into her Winx form in close-up.)

Edited: We only see Stella and Flora watching Bloom transforming in her sleep, and Flora refers to it as a sign that her powers are evolving. Fade out to the morning. (Also, the error with the blanket http://s9.photobucket.com/albums/a77/Rover_Wow/wccuts/?action=view&current=1x09-bloominbed-1.jpg.)

Hmm...

Stella has been a bit snippy at Bloom and Musa today. As Musa runs on to the bus for Magix after being ticked off at Stella's comment about Riven, Stella (who was trying to follow) crashes into Bloom.

Unedited: Stella just doesn't know what's gotten into her today. Later, Flora elbows her in the RF plane as she starts going on and on about all the couples.

Edited: Stella has been "spelled" by the seniors for trying to give them fashion tips (somehow, Bloom figures the latter part herself icon_biggrin.gif). Later, Flora fixes her in the RF plane as she starts rambling on and on.

I didn't like this change so much because you never see the act happen, when it's somewhat important to the plot. OTOH, I have received other opinions suggesting that it was more kid-friendly and amusing to have the spell, and it seemed in character for Stella to get into trouble like this.

Musa sees Riven going out with Darcy at a downtown cafe:

Unedited: Musa encounters Icy at the cafe. Musa slaps her (though we're never shown the actual act). Stormy even sees her fingerprints in the slap mark. Icy snaps to call the other witches in the cafe.

Edited: Musa encounters Icy at the Hex Cafe. Musa casts a wart on her. Stormy points at it. (http://s9.photobucket.com/albums/a77/Rover_Wow/wccuts/?action=view&current=1x09-slap-1.jpg) Icy snaps to remove the wart (the original slap mark was still visible at this point, and 4Kids has removed it).

I hate the 4kids edit of Musa and Icy. A slap just seems like the more natural thing to do in that kind of situation but I suppose 4kids didn't find it appropriate for children. However in a way I don't mind the edit about Stella giving bad fashion advice because it does seem like something she would do and added a little extra story plot to the season.

Moving on to episode 10, which has a particularly bad change in it. First though, the start of the episode gets rearranged a bit:

Unedited: At the well, the girls talk about getting to see the simulator -> The Trix take out their crystals (while saying something like, "Hey, Bloom has the same level of power as the dragon, so let's test her") -> The Trix yell at Knut (who bumbles in asking, "Why are we looking for the Dragonfire?"... to the brooms icon_biggrin.gif) -> Palladium shows the chamber and tests -> Bloom talks with Fake!Brandon about tomorrow's exam -> Riven and Darcy -> Darcy hacks the simulator

Edited: At the well, Bloom talks with the others about being asked out on a date with Fake!Brandon -> Bloom talks with Fake!Brandon about tomorrow's exam -> Riven and Darcy -> Palladium shows the chamber and tests -> The Trix take out their crystals (while explaining the plan to steal Bloom's powers) -> The Trix yell at Knut (who bumbles in talking about dried coriander lubosum for potion... to the brooms icon_biggrin.gif) -> Darcy hacks the simulator

I note this because in both versions of the date, Bloom talks about her midterms coming tomorrow. While that makes sense in the original, moving up the date means that Darcy doesn't hack the simulator until the night after, and the exams are one day later than they "should" be.

Second is a somewhat minor edit. Palladium explains the midterms:

Unedited: Pally's offering two choices. http://s9.photobucket.com/albums/a77/Rover_Wow/wccuts/?action=view&current=1x10-witchestest.jpg (Flora eventually takes this one), and reviving a dead planet (we see Bloom and Stella take this one: Bloom asks for the most desolate planet, and the chamber picks Domino for her).

Edited: The midterm for everyone will be surviving a dead planet, and the chamber will pick for them.

I had no real opinion on this, but others pointed out that it wouldn't make sense for Flora to counter witches' spells, when reviving a dead planet is right up Flora's alley (yes, 4Kids does use the d-word). Can't argue with that I suppose... (though I did have a rather entertaining exchange with someone who thought taking out the other option was stupid)

The Trix taking out their crystals:

Unedited: The Trix have a picture of Bloom using her powers in their triangle.

Edited: The Bloom picture has been replaced with a picture of the Trix instead. (http://s9.photobucket.com/albums/a77/Rover_Wow/wccuts/?action=view&current=1x10-wistri.jpg)

The Trix go after Kiko to get Bloom to use her Dragonfire.

Unedited: Icy zaps Kiko, and Bloom watches futilely as he drops into the lava. Shocked, Bloom gets even with the Trix and DFs them.

Edited: While Kiko was sneaking into Bloom's bag before the exam, Bloom found a protection spell in one of her books. Icy zaps Kiko, and Bloom tries the spell she just read earlier as he drops into the lava. Shocked, Bloom gets even with the Trix and DFs them.

At the time, I only knew about the protection spell, and I wasn't sure if not explaining Kiko surviving the lava fall was a good idea, and one of the replies said something similar. I later discovered that in the 4K version, Palladium made a point of saying that "While the world is virtual, the reality is not. When it's cold, you will really feel cold, and if rock falls and hits you, believe me, you will feel it." I suppose that this makes the exam genuinely dangerous and more exciting (especially for Kiko in this particular situation...)

Last but not least, the end of the episode, and that really bad change:

Unedited: The simulator has crashed, and the exams have been postponed. Everyone throws Bloom in the air over and over. End episode.

Edited: The simulator has crashed, and Bloom's gotten a A+ grade, while the exams have been postponed. Everyone throws Bloom in the air over and over. Over at CT, the Trix's attempt to use the DF goes kerflooey with no explanation whatsoever. End episode.

This particular edit got my attention, as when the ep first aired in the US (back before most people knew the show was altered), many viewers complained that the ending didn't make any sense, and they should have used the potion ingredients bit to explain. I'd have thought it would have been easier to just stick to the original script...

Posted by: SpiderBraids Aug 3 2012, 3:45 PM

Moving on to episode 11, we begin with Flora planting plants all around the dorm.

Unedited: Flora is preparing for her upcoming exams that have been postponed (re last ep). Musa is in her room, reading a text book, also preparing.

Edited: Flora is working on a potion to protect them from the witches (this is also true of the original, but that's just for the exam). Musa is in her room, reading sheet music. (The picture has been edited.)

Later on, the Winx are all at the swamp Flora has moved herself to. We have another instance of 4Kids spoiling a key plot point long before it's supposed to be revealed...

Unedited: Blah blah blah about the Cheerful Gladiolus. Its essence counters the witches' sadness spell. It's very skittish, and doesn't let itself get picked (so Flora plans to get it to extend one of its petals, and use her cloning liquid on it). The Winx tramp around the swamp, and Flora is surprised to suddenly discover a colony of nymphs. They say that they keep a low profile, and then they complain about the problems in getting the leaves they need to make their bubble homes.

Edited: Blah blah blah about the Cheerful Gladiolus. Only one exists, and it's owned by a nymph-run junior league, thus, Flora's cloning liquid. Stella is worried there might be something out there... (Insert shot of monster tree to end the first act) The Winx tramp around the swamp, and Flora finds the league. They talk about the work they do, and then they complain about the problems in getting their food.

Visual edit:

Unedited: The screen on Tecna's computer is somewhat plain, and shows a simple graph.

Edited: Tec's screen has color, and a more intricate graph. http://s9.photobucket.com/albums/a77/Rover_Wow/wccuts/?action=view&current=1x11-TecCom.jpg

The Winx discover a monster tree lying on a turtle shell.

Unedited: Bloom shoots at the tree. Then she gets the idea to shoot at the roots, and they char up.

Edited: Bloom shoots at the tree. Flora casts a spell that allows the tree to burn at its roots. Bloom shoots the roots, and they char up.

At the end:

Unedited: Flora is sure to ace her test now that she's gotten the flower she wants (courtesy of the nymphs, who say the flower let itself be picked), Flo mentions that Stella's test is tomorrow (B-O <- smiley of Stella's reaction). Both of these are followed up on in the next episode.

Edited: Flora's gotten the flower, and she decides to put it in Stella's room so it can get the most sunlight (insert Stella's reaction).

Posted by: SpiderBraids Aug 7 2012, 3:37 PM

Moving on to "Miss Magix", we start with a pretty big edit, in which a whole scene gets edited out...

Unedited: We open in downtown Magix. Bloom and Fake!Brandon are at a cafe. Bloom talks about her search about Daphne, and notes that the library won't let Bloom search about her (in both versions, a few episodes back FG told the librarian to deny her requests about Daphne). We then head over to Flora's exam, where she talks about how she prepared for it.

Edited: We just open on Flora's exam, and she has a bit of a talk with Palladium about dead planets (and yes, 4K does use the d-word). (Note that in both versions, we don't see the exam itself.)

Miss Magix pageant, and one of the contestants is crying backstage.

Unedited: Her hair was straight, and it's implied that the Trix have made her hair gone afro.

Edited: Her hair was apparently always afro, and here the contestant accidentally ruined her voice with a spell gone wrong. (I originally thought it was the Trix that did it, but running the dialog through a sound editor revealed the truth)

While I can understand not wanting to offend those with real afros, I thought it was more, shall we say, entertaining for the Trix to screw with the contestant backstage than for her to screw up on her own, but I got a reply preferring the latter by far, simply because it was different.

Clothes edits:

Unedited: Stormy has a panty shot, while during a scene of all the contestants gathered at the end of the pageant, one girl's in a bikini.

Edited: Stormy's skirt being redrawn to cover her panties is well-known, while bikini girl has had her outfit replaced with http://s9.photobucket.com/albums/a77/Rover_Wow/wccuts/?action=view&current=1x12-dress.jpg

This edit was already known and well-discussed back when the ep premiered in the US:

Unedited: Icy breaks the illusion on Lucy, leaving her humiliated. (The Trix were discussing this point back stage.)

Edited: Bloom suspects something and uncovers the illusion on Lucy.

There were those who liked Icy breaking the illusion as an indication of how cruel she could be, but there were also those who liked Bloom breaking the illusion. (Incidentally, the Trix never knew Stella was competing in the original, but were specifically targeting this plan against Stella in the dub.)

Later on, Stella takes her exam, and because she was studying all night last night after the pageant, she doesn't do well at all, getting caught in her own growth spell. This particular change must have bugged some viewers...

Unedited: Palladium hates to see his students fail, but he has no choice but to give her an F. As Stella sobs into Bloom's shirt, he tells her to study harder. Bloom tells her that for now, the future doesn't look so bleak: vacations are coming up. Yay!

Edited: Palladium lets the chamber give her a grade... and she passes. Bloom decides to celebrate with manicures and milkshakes. Yay?

I don't understand the whole redrawing of outfits to make the more "appropriate". How is a bikini not appropriate compared to the outfits that the girls wear in the first place? Plus it's just realistic that bikini's are worn by most women today.

I don't understand the whole redrawing of outfits to make the more "appropriate". How is a bikini not appropriate compared to the outfits that the girls wear in the first place? Plus it's just realistic that bikini's are worn by most women today.

Yeah, but at the beach. Bikini girl was the only contestant wearing such a revealing outfit in the final lineup.

Quick one from episode 13:

Unedited: We open in Gardenia. Vanessa has to help her cut carrots because home ec isn't exactly Bloom's best subject. As Vanessa is talking to her about how much she's grown, there's an oven fire. Bloom puts it out, and Vanessa tells her she's amazing. Bloom says, "Alfea doesn't offer home ec classes, but it's a cool school for fairies."

Edited: After a quick opening scene at Alfea, we head to Gardenia, where Vanessa's planning to tell Bloom about the day she was adopted, but there's an oven fire that Bloom has to put out. Somehow, the discussion doesn't happen until the end of the episode. (Meaning that Bloom already knows that she's adopted in the 4Kids version.)

To me, it made more sense for Bloom to be all wide-eyed upon finding out that she was adopted, rather than how she was adopted. However, another viewer thought that hiding the adoption and later revealing it dramatically was cliche. I'd argue that the drama of the reveal (Bloom's reaction etc) makes more sense in the original.

Moving on to episode 14, we deal with Mirta at CT.

Unedited: We open at CT. Griffin has just asked Mirta a simple question. Mirta answers that the 1st night of a full moon is a bad time to cast a transformation spell because the light rays may cause interference that could cause undesired, possibly permanent effects. Mirta is correct, but Griffin thinks she's a bit hesitant and points out that a good witch should be more confident. She then notices a classmate laughing at Lucy for appearing at the Miss Magix pageant. Later, Lucy lashes out at Mirta at being humiliated at the pageant (Mirta says that the Trix played a cruel trick on Lucy, which they did, and suggests that she avoid them), and goes on about how she'd rather be one of the Trix than be like Mirta. After Lucy leaves, Mirta decides that she's had it with the Trix.

Edited: After Bloom's exam (see below), Griffin asks about the class' favorite spells. Mirta's favorite is a friendship spell (she details how it works), and Griffin doesn't like it. She then notices a classmate laughing at her and Lucy. Later, Lucy lashes out at Mirta for the friendship spell mention. Scene cuts out immediately after Lucy leaves the room.

This won't be the only time that 4K edits out a reference to an event from a previous episode. I thought the unedited with the reference would be clearly better, but a response I got thought that both versions worked fine.

Next, we deal with Bloom:

Unedited: After another person gets an A on an exam, Bloom is called up to participate. She evades various light beams, and snatches a ball with a rose. She then evades more obstacles, as she reaches a receptacle. FG creates a large blue blob so as to test her reflexes. Bloom sees the blob (8-O < -- smiley of Bloom's reaction as it hurtles down), and she destroys it with a fireball as she puts the rose ball in the receptacle. (And there's not a single line of dialog during the exam... just a few gasps from her friends.) The others celebrate, and FG tells Bloom to get back to her seat as she calls up the next participant, and Bloom de-transforms. (http://s9.photobucket.com/albums/a77/Rover_Wow/wccuts/?action=view&current=1x14-endofexam.jpg) Cue scene of Bloom and Fake!Brandon at the ice-cream parlor, with Bloom talking about how she wants to learn about where her powers come from.

Edited: We open at Alfea, where Bloom is the first to be called up to participate in FG's finals. (There's a good deal of dialog here, mostly devoted to Bloom ranting about going first, and an exposition on the test.) She evades various light beams, and snatches a ball with a rose. She then evades more obstacles, as FG creates a large blue blob (some indistinct chatter as it forms). At the receptacle for the rose ball, Bloom sees the blob as it hurtles down (8-O < -- Bloom's reaction)... and then it flash-cuts to the scene of Bloom and Fake!Brandon at the ice-cream parlor, with Bloom talking about failing the exam, and wanting to learn about where her powers come from so she can control them better.

I got a reply thinking it wasn't a big deal since there were no major effects from the result of the exam, but I never liked this edit. The edit doesn't affect the overall plot, but it could also be argued that it does affect how Bloom has progressed as a fairy.

What interests me about this edit is that one of the parts cut out shows the other girls giving high-fives after Bloom passes (because now she doesn't). 4Kids left it out of the actual episode, but used it in a music video and the season 2 opening. HUH.

Quick clothes correction:

Unedited: While the girls talk about Bloom not returning to Alfea, the last shot of Musa is missing her jeans.

Edited: http://s9.photobucket.com/albums/a77/Rover_Wow/wccuts/?action=view&current=1x14-MusaPant.png

Lastly, we deal with a dub-induced continuity error...

Unedited: After reading the book at CT (no narration), Bloom asks Fake!Brandon to take her back to Alfea. She's never actually shown returning to Alfea, although the other girls make a reference to Fake!Brandon taking her back.

Edited: After hearing what the book says about her (with narration), Bloom asks Fake!Brandon to leave her at CT.

The problem with the change is that Kiko wakes her up the next day (unedited: she's heading to Magix to leave, edited: she's heading back to Alfea), and it makes more sense for her to have Kiko if she went back to Alfea first. Other viewers seem to agree. (The Nick version of this scene avoids this issue altogether by not having Kiko there at all [!])

Moving on to episode 15 and WizGiz's envelope...

Unedited: Bloom finds an unmarked envelope on the floor. Bloom thinks it must be the answers to WizGiz's quiz, and she shows it to her friends.

Edited: Bloom finds an envelope on the floor. With a little visual editing, it actually says it's the answers to WizGiz's quiz. http://s9.photobucket.com/albums/a77/Rover_Wow/wccuts/?action=view&current=1x15-Envelope.jpg (The part where Bloom shows the envelope to her friends is cut out as well.)

I got replies preferring the envelope being marked, saying that it wouldn't have been such an issue with an unmarked envelope, and Bloom should have returned the unmarked envelope immediately.

Later on, the Winx have decided to return the envelope. And now, the throwaway comment heard around the world!

Unedited: F (to Musa): "Oh please, give us a break. We all know you're a straight A student." M: "It's true, I did study, but... I've always hated those pop quizzes!" B: "Give it up you two, you always complain about it, and in the end, who gets the best marks? Musa and Flora."

Edited: Bloom's line is replaced so that there is no mention of Flo getting the best grades. The other lines are still in the same gist. (Exact words... F: "I'm sure you'll be fine. You've got the best grades out of all of us!" M: "Yeah I know but... these pop quizzes give me performance anxiety!" B: "C'mon you guys! We're all smart and we should all pass, and who knows? Maybe the test will be really easy!")

The biggest talking point about this episode back when it aired was how it's Musa, and not the expected Tecna, who's the best-graded student in the group. (That they talk about this nonchalantly was even more surprising to me) However, the writers appear to have ignored it ever since...

The envelope turns out to be mud. Yada yada yada about how cheating is bad.

Unedited: Griz interrupts the proceedings to tell everyone that there will be a meeting on the upcoming Parent-Teacher meetings. After the next ep starts with the Trix creating their troll, quite a bit of is spent with the Winx fretting about the meeting and their parents... and having nightmares about the parents.

Edited: We do not see the Griz announce the meeting, but we see the Trix creating their troll instead, and the next episode starts with the Winx discussing a movie they just watched, rather than the upcoming meeting.

It should be noted that the nightmare episode completely ignores the implications of having a parent/teacher meeting, such as what to do with Bloom. So it's somewhat interesting that 4K is cutting the fat, so to speak...

Minor thought on the nightmares in episode 16:

Unedited: Little to no dialog. (The only dialog in any of the scenes is Musa calling out for Riven in her nightmare)

Edited: A good deal of dialog.

Personally, it works better without the dialog (in fact, I could say the same for MANY scenes on this show). However, one of the replies I got thought it was more realistic to have dialog in the nightmares...

And now, on to episode 17:

Unedited: Bloom phones Fake!Brandon to talk about the book at CT (see 1x14). Bloom tells Fake!Brandon that the book was a fake and that the witches did it just because they could. After Bloom gets that out of the way, Fake!Brandon soon ends the conversation... so he can talk to the others about Diaspro. Ooh! Later, when Bloom meets Di, she specifically asks, "Who are you, Icy, Darcy, or Stormy?"

Edited: Bloom phones Fake!Brandon to talk about the upcoming Day of the Royals. Fake!Brandon quickly ends the conversation so he can talk to the others about Diaspro. Later, when Bloom meets Di, she's all "Okay, Icy, I'm here to stop you from sabotaging the festival."

It's hard to defend Bloom's attack on Diaspro, especially when it ended up leading to the Great Witch Invasion, but at least the unedited gives some insight on it... Bloom was probably thinking "I've never seen this lady before, and Brandon has never mentioned her either, yet she's claiming that Brandon is her boyfriend. I've just been tricked by the witches a few weeks ago, so maybe this is another one of their tricks." Still, I've been told that it still doesn't justify the attack.

FG and Grif are sitting next to each other at RF.

Unedited: The witches have been expelled (see 1x16 end), and they talk about that.

Edited: Just read this dialog...

Griffin: I'm 26-G. Don't tell me you're 26-F.
Faragonda: You look radiant. What's your secret? Spell?
G: Hmph!
FG: You and I haven't sat together since the summer of '08.
G: We were both dating that Red Fountain boy.
FG: Prince Jones.
G: We turned him into a goat when we found out he was two-timing us.
(They then go on to talk about school surveys)

When I first compared this, I simply wrote "Unedited for the win!" because I felt that plot-relevant dialog was clearly better than 4K's dialog. Some of the comments I got, however, liked the idea of the 4K dialog giving background character depth for FG and Grif. HUH.

Unedited: So the switch is out. We don't get an explanation, we don't find out if the group's punished, we just have to deal with it for now as we cut to Bloom at the balcony. End.

Edited: So the switch is out. After FG and Griz slap the whole group with a 50% dilution for humiliating Alfea at the festival, Musa discusses the reasons for the switch with Stella (something about Sky wanting to experience life outside of royalty), while Bloom is out on the balcony. End.

Not surprisingly, I got a reply preferring the punishment and explanation for the switch.

Posted by: SpiderBraids Aug 17 2012, 1:20 AM

Bloom decides to return home, and 4K decides that we need an explanation:

Unedited: She walks into a random alley, and http://s9.photobucket.com/albums/a77/Rover_Wow/wccuts/?action=view&current=1x18-BloomCries.jpg she says "Goodbye Magix", before disappearing in a flash.

Edited: She walks into an alley marked "http://s9.photobucket.com/albums/a77/Rover_Wow/wccuts/?action=view&current=1x18-Transportus.jpg", we hear a voice-over asking Bloom where she wants to go, and we never see her teary-eyed face as she returns home.

On one hand, I imagine some viewers would probably appreciate a better explanation for Bloom going home, but OTOH, the moment is more emotional in the original.

While Bloom's on Earth licking her wounds, we see what's happening at Alfea...

Unedited: FG calls the other Winx in because she was never told that Bloom left. (Next scene we find out that Stella was hoping Bloom would change her mind.)

Edited: FG is denying the other Winx permission to go get Bloom because they were slapped with dilution last week.

Someone thought the unedited version made it look like the Winx didn't really care for their friend.

So the Trix have beaten up Bloom, and Icy tells her story.

Unedited: Daphne is revealed to be Bloom's sister. (We also have Bloom reacting to her finding this out.)

Edited: Daphne is revealed to be... the guardian of the DF. (Bloom's reaction is cut.)

So instead of her sister, some random nymph is taking care of Bloom. By the time Bloom reads her family tree, it's no longer the big deal it should be. I got a few replies disagreeing about Bloom and her guardian being (or not being) related, though...

Unedited: Icy only tells Bloom she's a princess after she's frozen her to the wall.

Edited: Bloom realizes she's a princess after Icy tells her story.

Oh yeah, the unedited also has a nice (if unimportant) scene of Mitzi trying to explain to some other people what happened to her scooter.

Episode 19 is generally intact, except for a little rearrangement, so that in the 4Kids version, part of the CT invasion is first instead of Bloom and Stella returning to Alfea. This episode is more-or-less intact plot-wise, but 4Kids adds a little something to Bloom and Stella's return to Alfea, and Stella taking to Real!Sky on the phone:

B&S's return:

Unedited: Silence.

Edited: B: I can't believe I let them take the Dragonfire. S: Well, it's not the end of the world... Well, it could be I guess.

Real!Sky on the phone:

Unedited: We do not hear the other end of the conversation while Real!Sky is being shown.

Edited: We hear Stella give him a putdown: "Gotta go now Brandon, or Prince Sky, or whoever you are!"

On to episode 20... After a minor change of timeframe for the ultimatum (Unedited: 12 hrs., edited: 5 hrs.) the Winx have assembled in FG's room for a mission.

Unedited: FG tells the gang to go to Domino to find clues about Bloom's past and stuff.

Edited: FG tells the gang to go to Sparx so they can rekindle the DF.

Later, the girls get dressed for their trip.

Unedited: Palladium only explains about the portal that will take them to Domino.

Edited: Palladium explains that their shoes and exposed midriffs "simply will not do", and we hear Griz say: "If I had my way, this would be the year-round dress code."

Finally, some rearrangement.

Unedited: The Winx fight a yeti and Bloom falls into a chasm. Meanwhile, the RF boys land at Alfea. FG fears that the war has only just begun. End.

Edited: The Winx fight a yeti. Meanwhile, the RF boys land at Alfea, and FG tells them about the Winx being on a mission. Bloom falls into a chasm. End.

Posted by: SpiderBraids Aug 20 2012, 3:07 PM

Picking up where we left off from the previous episode...

Unedited: Bloom wakes up in the chasm, and has a short flashback to slip sliding down to where she is right now, before considering herself lucky. Back up there, the Yeti walks past, and while Tecna wants to attack it, Musa prefers to let the Yeti thinks it's rid of them. The girls come across a frozen castle, which Stella decides to defrost, while Bloom walks around the remains of the castle underground.

Edited: After the yeti walks past, Tecna says that the avalanche covered the chasm completely (even though we later see a shot where it isn't covered at all). Musa decides to look for Bloom with an energy sensing spell. They find the castle, and Stella decides to defrost it. In the chasm, Bloom survives the fall due to the padding on her outfit. She explores the underground remains, and hears memories from her past, such as a lullaby and dinner at the palace (which were not there in the original).

Later, Tecna decides to help Stella defrost the castle:

Unedited: Tecna runs a bunch of tecnobabble by Stella as she is boosting her sunlight powers (something about focusing her ion energy and stuff). Of course Stella doesn't understand (hence the "Wha...?" expression), so Tecna runs it by her in plain language: "I'm just making your job easier icon_wink.gif"

Edited: "Now aren't you glad we took that mathematics and magic honors workshop together?" "Uh? I took that?" "Yeah, you did, but it was early and you slept a lot in class :)"

One of the replies cited this change (and Stella shooting ice crabs below) as an example of how the 4Kids version is funnier.

Bloom finds out about her parents:

Unedited: They went into exile thinking that they had lost both of them.
Edited: They had Daphne send Bloom to earth.

And now, the ice crab battle, and a matter of aesthetics...

Unedited: Musa worries about the ice crabs coming in. About 15-20 seconds later, she's hovering in the air and attacking them with a "Sonic Mega Blast!" She floats down, and we get a close-up of her saying HA! Then the Specialists arrive to do their thing.

Edited: The Specialists arrive. Meanwhile, Musa wonders if the ice crabs like rap. She raps for about 15-20 seconds, before attacking them with a "Double Subwoofer Blast!" She floats down, and we cut to the Specs doing their own thing.

And also...

Unedited: (Stella while shooting ice crabs) "Isn't the best offense... (shoots crab) a good defense?"

Edited: (ditto) "The only ice I like is the type I can wear!"

One thing that doesn't change: Real!Sky has broken up with Diaspro, and Bloom is quite happy about it, before cracking a deal with him that she doesn't have to call him "Prince" (but in the 4K version, she calls him "Baby" instead... unsure.gif)

Posted by: SpiderBraids Aug 26 2012, 3:31 AM

On to episode 22 and Riven in his cell.

Unedited: Darcy gives him a long hallucination sequence with clones of Riven and some monsters. One even mimics his actions as if he was a reflection in a mirror.

Edited: The hallucination is cut out, and we only hear him thinking what he'll say next to Darcy ("You follow Icy around like a wannabe").

Back in the day, I received a reply that suggesting it was "definitely cut-worthy material" based solely on the above description. However, the scene is arguably somewhat more important than the above description suggests, as it basically has Riven owning up to betraying his RF squadmates. Quite a few people disliked this cut when I posted a video about it...

Unedited: Riven picks the lock on his door with a bent nail he found on the cell floor.

Edited: Riven has Lady Griffin (in the cell across from him) spell the bent nail before he picks the lock with it.

unsure.gif

Back at Alfea, Tecna is crying...

Unedited: She says she has something in her eye.

Edited: She says that Bloom's odds of survival are impossibly low.

A recurring reply to notes concerning dialog changes (such as this one) basically amounted to "The original dialog is boring and the 4Kids dialog is better/funnier".

Bloom and Stella have left. The Army is attacking again.

Unedited: One of the battle scenes has Mirta projecting herself from the pumpkin (a la ep 16) to the balcony to see the battle, and then she protects Flora from a monster with a force field.

Edited: This scene is not present in the 4K version.

The return of Riven. He explains his escape.

Unedited: After jumping off the window, a buttress on the CT building broke his fall, and he slid into the dump.

Edited: He used his cape as a parachute thing.

Okay, next ep:

Unedited: About 1/4 of the way through the show, Priscilla and Ortensia talk about the current battle with the remaining Winx. Then Tecna (after getting paged on her "zipper pull") runs off to analyze something about a subspace shield with Timmy. She is slightly googly eyed at Timmy, but resists the temptation to just tell him. (Yeah... a lot like Flora and Helia the next season.) But the scene does end with a bunch of numbers scrolling across a screen before skittling out into a heart shape, as hopefully shown in my avatar (apparently Tecna doesn't quite understand the concept of "love").

Edited: The show starts with the Priscilla and Ortensia scene, and the content is just about the same. Tecna gets paged and runs off. We fast forward almost all the way to the end before we see Tecna again. She's analyzing how big the Army of Decay is with Timmy. We only see the numbers scrolling across the screen, and not the heart that they form.

I liked this scene (see avatar), partially because Tecna is my favorite character. But others felt it was out-of-character for Tecna to fall in love with Timmy rather than focus on the battle. I suppose that's true...

Last set of comparisons for season 1, beginning with Episode 24 and Grif's arrival at Alfea:

Unedited: FG welcomes Grif to Alfea, and Grif talks about how FG's students helped her and and the student witches escape.

Edited: FG and Grif have small talk. They both remember a time when Griffin turned a sorority at Alfea into goats, and she left seven inches tall in a jar.

Like with the RF exhibition example from a few episodes back, 4Kids has changed plot-relevant dialog to, well, this. (And again, I got a reply saying character depth wins.)

Later, FG, Grif, and the RF teachers are in FG's room.

Unedited: Everyone is a bit worried about Bloom and Sky, and how the DF has been stolen.

Edited: Everyone discusses how the Trix conned their way into CT.

On to episode 25, with just one biggie edit, and it's major rearrangment.

Unedited: Brief opening scene at Alfea -- > Bloom entering Lake Rocalucce and getting her powers back -- > Flora casts a spell on Mirta, and it works. Mirta tells her the trick was to focus her energy through both hands (which I'm sure has to mean something) -- > The brief Riven/Musa scene -- > Sky arrives downtown -- > The Trix make their thrones -- > The Winx talk to Mirta in the courtyard -- > The nymphs.

Edited: The Trix make their thrones -- > The brief opening scene and Flora casting her spell are combined into one scene. Flora believes that she tried harder -- > The brief Riven/Musa scene -- > Sky arrives downtown -- > The Winx talk to Mirta in the courtyard -- > Bloom entering Lake Chrysalis and getting her powers back -- > The undines.

And on to the season finale, with The Trix making their approach.

Unedited: No dialog, except Icy saying "Alfea" while looking at her powers.

Edited: Over shots of their approach, we hear Icy telling the others who's getting what once they're done with Alfea.

Once again, rearrangement, although much less.

Unedited: The Trix are making a rampage... and then they see a huge wall of fire appear. Bloom the fairy is back!

Edited: The Trix are making a rampage... and then they hear and see Bloom the fairy, who then creates a wall of fire.

This edit was of particular interest to me:

Unedited: Icy decides to let her sisters deal with the other fairies while she deals with Bloom.

Edited: Icy takes the DF away from her sisters as the battle separates.

I'd once read an article written about Icy that pointed out how her attitude (and taking the Dragonfire from her sisters) led to their defeat in S1. With that article in mind, I expected that the author of the article would have something to say about the change. Although she admitted it was a stupid move by Icy, she still preferred Darcy and Stormy falling because they had less power than for no real reason whatsoever.

During the battle...

Unedited: The other fairies and Trix duke it out with each other. Darcy uses a hypnotic dragon, which Musa counters with a sonic blast. Cut to shots of various places that are devoid of people, over sorrowful music. CT. RF. Downtown. The lake. Cut back to the Bloom and Icy tilt.

Edited: The other fairies and Trix duke it out with each other. Darcy uses a hypnotic dragon, which Musa counters with a sonic blast. Cut straight to the Bloom and Icy tilt.

I can see why they cut this. Time constraints!

Icy is done, with a capital D. The teachers talk...

Unedited: FG and Grif talk about how stupid the Trix were to steal the DF, because only Bloom knows how to control it. Meanwhile, Coda receives news that downtown Magix is coming back to life. Show downtown Magix returning to normal.

Edited: Grif wants to retire because the Trix conned their way into CT, and FG talks her out of it. Meanwhile, Coda receives news that they've received some funding to fix RF. Show downtown Magix returning to normal.

FG addresses the student fairies:

Unedited: FG announces she's decided to renew the concept of the modern fairy with a new word: Winx.

Edited: FG announces that there will be no final exams this year. (Between the incidents with the broken simulator and the envelope, you'd think that most of the students here really don't like taking exams icon_smile.gif)

And last but not least...

Unedited: Bloom enjoys the party, and sees the nymphs flying above her. Later at the fountain, Bloom says that there are lots of things she still doesn't get (like her origins), but Sky tells her that no matter what she does he'll always be at her side. END!

Edited: At the fountain, Sky tells Bloom to join the party. Bloom enjoys the party, and sees the nymphs flying above her. END!

I think I like the undedited version of this episode better!

After a bit of a hiatus, here we go with the season 2 premiere. Once again, we kick off the season with some rearrangement:

Unedited: LAYLA!!! Blah blah blah. Layla runs into Darkar and gets thrown off a cliff while Darkar takes posession of a bunch of pixies. Over at Alfea, Bloom checks on her friends. Stella is having trouble picking clothes, because her latest outfit she bought doesn't fit her (even though it did at the store). Bloom asks if Stella might need a little Dragonfire help and Stella says forgotten what outfits Brandon has already seen her in. Bloom then discovers the secret archives, and then a pixie. She is not amused that someone discovered the secret archives. After introducing herself as Concorda, she talks about pixies, how pixies bond, and pixie pets. We find out that Concorda is bonded to the archives. Bloom realises she's late for the party and runs. Later, the pixies get drained.

Edited: Alfea. Bloom narrates about what her friends (though for some reason, not herself) did during the summer (for example, Musa had a concert tour and Stella interned at a fashion mag). Stella is having a fashion block. Bloom makes a Stella impression, and Stella is not amused. Bloom discovers the secret archives, and finds a pixie. She's a psychic pixie, and although she wasn't going to do any more readings, she decides to do one for Bloom. Blah blah blah, it leads in to LAYLA!!! Blah blah blah, Layla runs into Darkar, and there are a few more Alfea scenes before we get back to Layla getting thrown off a cliff, and the pixies getting drained.

At the time I thought that 4Kids were afraid that the original order might have made the viewers think, "This can't be Winx... where's Bloom (or insert other favorite fairy here)?" One poster thought that Concorda giving the psychic reading was better (adding that the pixie explanation seemed out of place), and also added a theory about the rearrangement: that it creates hooks before ad breaks, to keep the viewers from looking for something else to watch. This theory probably also explains the way they handled episodes 5 and 11 of the first season...

The edits above took up so much of the show, there's only one more edit to note...

Unedited: After the rebuilt wing is revealed, and just before the Specs head home, they make some chit chat with the Winx. Bloom is hoping to find out more about her origins this year, while Stella gossips about fashion, and when Timmy and Tecna return from calibrating the sim, she says, "Do I have to say more?" Musa adds, "Yet you always do. It wouldn't be Stella if she didn't have the last word." Heh.

Edited: After they arrive at Alfea, the Specs have chit chat. Bloom has heard about Sky canoeing with Diaspro, while Stella gossips about fashion. After gossiping about Tecna and Timmy's fashions, she suggests a small change for Musa. Musa's all "I'm not going to change my pigtails." Heh. Psychic. We then head back to Layla, and then the Dragonfire Wing dedication.

Amusingly enough, Musa would change her pigtails in the premiere of the third season (and it almost seemed as if I was the only one who remembered that she said that!)

Posted by: Abby Sep 13 2012, 11:55 AM

I wish they would have left the opening like it was and also not have changed the whole psychic thing. It would have been great to have an explanation of the pixies right off the bat in the 4kids version.

That is hilarious that Musa said that yet she always changes her hair now. At least in season 3 it was still in pig tails, it was just long. Now it isn't even in pigtails anymore.

Moving on to the 2nd episode of S2...

Unedited: Layla introduces herself, mentioning the failed attempt rescue last week.

Edited: Layla introduces herself, adding that she is the Princess of Tides. (Unedited: We only discover her royal life in episode 13.)

Interestingly, Layla is not connected to tides or even H2O in any way. Given her powers and her wavy wings and hair, surely there had to be some sort of connection. But where would her athletic agility fit in?

Next, WizGiz's class.

Unedited: The class about opposite powers is just that. There is no foreshadowing being implied. After Bloom tells WizGiz to talk to Stella about fashion, he just keeps going on about other kinds of powers. Later, Bloom just has a plain bad feeling.

Edited: Class about opposite powers. After Bloom tells WizGiz to talk to Stella about fashion, he slaps Bloom with homework. The end scene has Bloom feeling her opposite getting stronger.

I don't think they really followed on the whole opposite powers thing. At the time, I was wondering "What's Bloom's opposite anyway? Icy? Dark Bloom?" Then S3 came out with Valtor being made from a shard of the Dragon's Flame, and at least one viewer cited this scene.

Musa doesn't understand why Layla could tell she slept four days.

Unedited: Stella explains that wrinkles show the passage of time... except on her of course :)

Edited: Stella comes in and teases Bloom for sleeping.

One reply thought it was good to finally have an explanation of how Layla could tell, but another thought it didn't make sense that she could tell after "only" four days...

Witches at boot camp!

Unedited: There are two separate flashbacks (first one is Stormy's, second is Icy's), and they're not connected to the Trix's anger (at least not with dialog).

Edited: We get only Stormy's flashback, over which she has a teed off rant over their defeat last season.

Darkar gets into action:

Unedited: Towards the end of the ep, Darkar finds out from Kerbog about the Codex being split into four parts, and where they're being kept. He decides to get some sidekicks to make his job easier. He takes the Trix from Light Rock Monastery and gives them their Gloomix.

Edited: Midway through the ep, Darkar decides to get some sidekicks. He takes the Trix from Light Haven. Later towards the end, he gives them their Gloomix (though it is not named as such here).

Posted by: Abby Sep 24 2012, 5:15 AM

I don't like how 4kids had to add in the rant with Stormy about last season, it would have been nice if they had left that one alone.

Posted by: SpiderBraids Sep 26 2012, 4:00 PM

Moving on to 2x03...

Unedited: While looking for Piff, Layla runs across Knut with a broom for about 15 seconds. (Remember, he got signed on as a janitor at the end of last season.) Then she meets FG and the nurse.
Edited: Layla runs straight into FG and the nurse.

Next...

Unedited: After she catches Piff, Layla talks to FG. FG tells her that Darkar can suck powers and that makes him dangerous. Then she proposes the mission to the Winx.
Edited: After Layla catches Piff, FG won't let the Winx go to the UnderRealm (leading to the test, below). Later on, Layla talks to FG. FG tells her that good magic is harmful in the UnderRealm.

Classroom. FG has decided that they need to rescue the pixies. However, her enthusiasm on letting the Winx go on the mission differs between the two versions.

Unedited: FG believes that rescuing the pixies is their main priority, and has selected three of the girls to participate in the mission: Layla knows her way around. Bloom has the Dragonfire. Stella has sunlight powers, which are useful against shadow monsters. Meanwhile, Tecna gets shafted into using her technopowers to monitor the situation. Musa asks, what about plant and sound powers? So, FG turns the whole hall into a cave. With no transformation sequence, Flora and Musa are in their fairy outfits. There are no living plants in the caves for Flora to use her powers, while Musa's sound powers cause a cave-in. Meanwhile, Tecna notes that the cave FG made is much better than a computer simulation.
Edited: FG won't let the Winx go to the UnderRealm, telling the girls that it's very dangerous and they have to pass a test before they are allowed to go. The girls convince FG to give them the test, so she turns the hall into a cave. After ad break, insert transformation sequence for Flora and Musa here. There are no living plants in the caves for Flora to use her powers, while Musa's sound powers cause a cave-in. Monsters come. Insert transformation sequence for the other three here. The three of them deal with the monsters. The three pass, while Tecna notes that she couldn't even transform.

I received replies thinking that FG giving them the test was better, and one of them thought that it was cruel for FG to have the "rejects" demonstrate their failures.

FG gets them ready for the mission.

Unedited: FG gives Layla some magical light seeds, to save for repeling shadow monsters.
Edited: FG gives Layla some magical seeds, to save for "any dangerous situation".

You might think that dropping one word from the seed description makes no real difference, but trust me, there is: I got a reply thinking it was illogical in the original for FG to give the light seeds to Layla rather than Stella.

Now, they're in the cave.

Unedited: Tecna is trying to keep contact through geosensing as the girls (and boys) enter the cave. Stella trips over, and decides to transform and use her scepter to light the place up. After we see the boys returning to Alfea and meeting up with Flora and Tecna, Bloom and Layla decide to deal with the monsters that arrive. Layla: "Let's all transform!" Bloom: "So you're a...?" Layla: "Of course I am! YAAAA!!"

Edited: Tecna completely loses contact with the other girls when they enter the cave. Stella trips over, and thinking it may be a monster, decides to transform. Bloom and Layla decide to deal with the monsters that show up. Since Layla has already transformed during the test, Bloom's not surprised anymore. Later, we see the boys returning to Alfea and meeting up with Flora and Tecna.

Posted by: mightymarty2 Sep 27 2012, 7:34 AM

The test seems more logical to me as this place drains magic. Just to check everyone can use their powers ok in that enviroment

Posted by: Abby Sep 28 2012, 9:11 PM

I also like the fact that they had to test to show that Layla is a fairy instead of bloom being surprised when they are in the under realm.

Posted by: SpiderBraids Oct 2 2012, 3:12 PM

Moving on to 2x04, the biggest edit is outside of the main plot... and it's not even a big one at that. Back at Alfea...

Unedited: Riv sits. Riv watches Tec/Tim. Riv says that they sent the best persons to do this mission. He later has an about face with Musa: "If I did go we'd be back by now." Musa cries on his shoulder.

Edited: Riv sits. Riv sulks. Riv says Sal should have sent him. Later, Riv is worried about who Sal did send and Musa cries on his shoulder.

2nd biggest edit is a matter of nomeclature.

Unedited: Amentia calls herself a princess.

Edited: Amentia calls herself the queen.

A few eps later, Amentia's parents show up, and many viewers were probably all, "Wha...?"

Related to last week's edit. The shadow monsters have Layla and co. cornered.

Unedited: Seeds. But no light! However, Stella has what they need (remember, sunlight powers?)

Edited: Seeds. But no magic. Of course, Stella's got plenty to spare.

I will concede that 4K gets rid of the illogicity of taking light seeds into an environment with hardly any light. I also got a reply wondering why FG didn't give them to Stella in the first place if they required light.

2x05, and another small edit back at Alfea.

Unedited: Livy arrives. The pixies disappeared while she was sick in bed after bumping her head. Blah blah blah. Livy is happy to see Piff, and the other girls wonder if she'd have a heart attack to find Layla alive too.

Edited: Livy arrives. The pixies disappeared while she was delivering a message to RF. Blah blah blah. Livy is happy to see Piff, and the other girls (having just menioned Piff a few moments ago) think she's forgetful.

For now, I question making Livy forgetful. How can such a forgetful pixie be a messenger, anyway? I got a reply suggesting that this was meant as comic relief...

Back with the other pixies...

Unedited: Chatta stops Lockette from telling LD where the pixie village is. Chatta tells Lockette that he needs them to find their village (and therefore wouldn't kill them, no matter how much he threatens).

Edited: Chatta gives LD the wrong directions to the village. Even though the picture shows her yelling at Lockette.

Rearrangement of minor importance:

Unedited: Layla swings to the pixies, transforms, tries her powers on it -- > The witches show up and gloat -- > Layla tries elbowing -- > The witches attack

Edited: Layla swings to the pixies -- > The witches show up -- > Layla transforms and tries her powers on it -- > The witches show up, gloat, and then attack -- > (clip of LD and Kerbog from ep 2 discussing the Codex pieces, here they're finding out that Chatta's directions are no good) -- > Layla tries elbowing -- > More of the attack

2x06, and not much to see, except something in the original version that 4K would be proud of. Sponsus is obviously wasted, but he says he's drinking grapefruit juice. For once, something that is TOO clean for 4K standards, as they change it to something called courage brew. Also...

Unedited: Bloom, Stella and Layla ooh-aah about the crystals lighting up the path.

Edited: Bloom, Stella and Layla all talk about how they're planning their weddings.

Unedited: The parrot doesn't interact with Brandon, except for occasionally chiming "107" which seems random until it's revealed that those are the numbers of steps to the altar.

Edited: The parrot says "Life is twisted" etc.

I got a response saying that the edited version was funnier in both of these cases.

Unedited: Brandon has a flashback presented as a series of drawings.

Edited: This flashback is skipped.

Posted by: SpiderBraids Oct 6 2012, 8:16 AM

On to 2x07.

Unedited: The entire episode is framed with a paper puppet show done by Livy (!)

Edited: The only time we see any paper puppets is when Kiko is cutting them. The ep ends on Sky falling out of the squirrels' tree.

This is probably one of those rare occasions where cutting is justified IMO, because the puppet show seems a bit juvenile.

Other than that, just many minor edits.

Unedited: AFAIK, the obelisk FG is at is the only one. Blah blah blah. The next day, it's sunny, and the Winx run out to deal with the obelisk. The pixies wonder where they're going.

Edited: FG explains that 3 obelisks popped up. Blah blah blah, cut back to Alfea where the pixies wonder why they're outside (thus, suggesting that the Winx have been out there the whole time). Wipe back to the fight. They're not in their robes anymore, and FG's not there anymore either.

Obelisk fight!

Unedited: There's no indication that the Winx lose their powers after firing at it. Some creep in a hood is watching them. Stella asks if they should sit and look at the stone or go back. Cue Flora's brief shower. Except for Bloom, the group apparently chose the latter.

Edited: The Winx apparently lose their powers after shooting at it once (except for Bloom of course!), even though they're still in their fairy outfits. Some creep in a hood is watching the Winx. Cut to ad break, then cue Flora's brief shower (with visual edit: http://s9.photobucket.com/albums/a77/Rover_Wow/wccuts/?action=view&current=207goof_1.jpg, http://s9.photobucket.com/albums/a77/Rover_Wow/wccuts/?action=view&current=207goof_2.jpg)

I got a reply saying that the unedited makes Bloom look more like a Mary Sue. Can't argue with that I suppose...

Later in some room with FG and pixies... she gives them some jewels.

Unedited: "The situation is extremely critical. These must remain secret. You know what to do." (We later have a brief flashback to this in 1x20, with FG thinking that it might be their best hope after all, before revisiting it in the season finale.)

Edited: FG gives more details. Blah blah blah, LD's looking for the Codex pieces to open a portal to Realix. There is another way to open this portal, but all we know is LD must not find out what it is. (We don't get the brief flashback in 1x20, so we only revisit this plot point in the season finale, 19 episodes later.)

Posted by: SpiderBraids Oct 10 2012, 3:14 PM

On to 2x08, and the renovation of Red Fountain...

Unedited: Musa and Layla discuss the dancing they're doing at the party. A woman walks past silently. Musa thinks for a few moments and realises that Darcy just walked past. Cue chase!

Edited: Musa and Layla discuss the dancing they're doing at the party. A woman walks past and says "Gag me." Musa thinks the voice is familar, thinks for a few moments, and realises that Darcy just walked past. Cue chase!

In the unedited, Darcy is smart not to say anything. On the other hand, in the edited, it makes more sense for Musa to recognize Darcy by her voice.

Over to Tecna and Digit.

Unedited: Digit plays back for Tecna a scene from a video game she programmed. And it has a nice long kiss between Timmy and Tecna. Digit does say it's not finished though.

Edited: Digit makes Tecna play back her dream. Unlike the original, Tecna talks over it. Just as we're about to get to that nice long kiss, she says that's when she woke up.

A reply I got liked the kiss being edited out because it looks better when they're kissing for real later in the season.

Unedited: A worried Amore says, "I don't like that at all," regarding Helia simply letting the ropes off the monster.

Edited: Amore makes a comment about Helia being romantic.

Seriously?

Unedited: Tecna finds the monster's weak spot, under its throat, and Bloom has the specialists attack it.

Edited: Tecna finds the monster's weak spot, and Bloom has the specialists attack, even though we're never told where that weak spot is.

We end with Icy acting ridiculous... in the original (seriously!):

Unedited: Icy is at the scale room. She sees the guards and says "There are too many of them!" and then retreats. Later, she apologizes to LD that the guards arrived first.

Edited: Icy is readying an attack against the guards when LD tells her to retreat. Later, she sucks up to LD on the monster he sent.

Even I don't understand why Icy would just retreat like that, instead of attacking the guards OR waiting for the other two. (AND why would it look like she was preparing to attack if she has just decided to retreat?)

Posted by: SpiderBraids Oct 14 2012, 7:16 AM

On to 2x09, with its famous plot hole, but first...

Unedited: We open on a flashback scene of a pillage. Later, we have a scene of Digit in the computer, a short scene where Digit finds a book and tells Tecna to find it in the library. Meanwhile, Lockette snags her dress (trying to play in the computer like Digit is doing), and Chatta gives her a new one, which she will be wearing in many other eps.

Edited: The flashback pillage is shown as part of the scene of Digit in the computer. After an ad break, we go straight to Tecna and Digit in the library, without showing the bit between Chatta and Lockette.

On the one hand, this cut is probably justified with time constraints. On the other, suddenly Lockette's in this new outfit with no explanation while feeding some pets.

4Kids creates a plot hole...

Unedited: Pally introduces his new look, the latest step in his elf evolution. New!Pally teaches how to create a Plasma Sphere, and gives warnings on how to use it. Instead of aiming it at the targets as he tells her to, Amaryl decides to shoot it at Stella, so New!Pally desists the sphere and threatens to expel Amaryl.

Edited: Pally introduces his new look, which he got after a vacation. New!Pally teaches how to create a Sphere of Truth (to discover the true nature of your enemy), and gives warnings on how to use it. Instead of aiming it at the targets as he tells her to, Amaryl decides to shoot it at Stella, so New!Pally desists the sphere and gives Amaryl detention.

My thoughts on New!Pally... what's so un-kid-friendly about evolution? Isn't it a key part of Pokemon anyway?

My thoughts on changing the nature of the sphere... it creates two problems for me: One, we never see the Sphere of Truth show its intended effect (while destruction was the Plasma Sphere's intended effect, and we get lots of it from Tecna), and two, it's inconsistent with a plot twist later in the season. When that plot twist came to light, I pointed out the plot hole and got a reply basically saying, "Well, who's to say that Tecna mastered the spell in one day?" Later, after I found out about the original spell, I discussed the change and resulting plot hole with a fellow fan by email, and that fan also suggested the possibility of Tecna casting the spell wrong. The response went on to say that Amaryl and Tecna must have been pretty nasty to fling such a violent spell at their targets, and suggested that that was why 4K changed it. The fan preferred the Sphere of Truth in spite of its flaws, but I'd argue that the plot hole is reason enough to prefer the original...

Minor one! Swordfighting, and Bloom breaks the sword she's picked.

Unedited: Avalon explains why the other sword was better (it was made with a better alloy). The moral is not to trust appearances.

Edited: Same as unedited, except Bloom was actually going to pick the other sword, and the moral is to trust your first instincts.

In either case, the moral is so totally setting up Avalon to be revealed as evil. Except that it doesn't happen. On to the epilogue:

Unedited: Tecna insists that she attacked Avalon based on a well-known prophecy, and a bunch of observations she made. FG tells her that the prophecy was written by a comedian, and just because it was well-known doesn't mean it's true (there was a scene in Avalon's class that also said something like this earlier).

Edited: Tecna insisted that she attacked Avalon based on her logical conclusions. FG tells Tecna that her logic was flawed. The prophecy itself, however, does not get debunked. (As for the class scene in the original, Avalon was all "I need your complete trust" and stuff.)

Debunking the prophecy gives the writers an excuse (if a flimsy one) to not make Tecna suspicious of Avalon again in, say, episode 19. (There was one time I assumed that Tecna would be renewing her suspicions against him in that episode, and I was surprised to read that she doesn't.) OTOH, I'd think that Tecna would have had this covered...

Posted by: P-girl Oct 14 2012, 1:56 PM

They can talk high and low about it being too violent, I still think the whole Sphere of Truth thing was one of the dumbest edits 4Kids made. Couldn't they just make it non-lethal? Like a sleeping spell or something? That way they could still go for the whole 'Miscast' thing in the end to explain the damage. I'm a big fan of this episode in its original form and save the Musa-centric episode, the one they botched up the most.

/Still bitter.

Posted by: Abby Oct 16 2012, 3:51 AM

I don't get the change. It makes sense to me what p-girl said, it didn't have to be changed completely.

Posted by: SpiderBraids Oct 20 2012, 3:39 PM

@P-girl: Given the episode's plot, it probably made sense at the time to have Tecna to use a spell designed to expose Avalon's true nature. In any case, I never really put much credence in the "Tecna cast the spell wrong" theory, as (if nothing else) I would expect that they would have said something about it ASAP.

Moving on to 2x10 now, with another famous edit, but first, Bloom and Sky on the phone.

Unedited: The phone conversation at the start continues off the last episode, with Bloom being all gushy about Avalon showing her her family tree. Sky on the other hand seems to be having issues with Bloom spending her time with Avalon, and they argue over this. Ouch.

Edited: Bloom talks about Stella's latest idea for a date: a horse ride through a park. Sky on the other hand wants her to come over to RF the next day for serious discussion. Bloom thinks it's about Diaspro and they argue over this. Ouch.

At Alfea, it's time for class...

Unedited: Time for self-defense... your teacher: GRISELDA! Griz asks the class, "Now, you are up against an enemy much more powerful than you. This enemy has just cast a terribly destructive spell, what do you do?" Musa answers, "We combine powers!" The Griz says "Too late Musa! You've just been pulverized into oblivion." Stella: "Good thing you told us, 'cause otherwise I would have stood there before I finally get hit."

Edited: Magical cuisine seminar... er, make that Griselda's Master Combat class. Griz blah blahs about winning some gold medal and Musa is all "Gee, how long ago was that?" Griz: "It was 20 years ago, but I can still fight like a champion!" Stella complains that she was expecting to learn how to make a meal with a single spell.

Quite a few viewers didn't like that Griz outright tricked her students into attending her class in the edited, but it was pointed out to me that if Musa has the top grades (as mentioned in episode 15), one would have expected her to think of blocking the spell first, before attacking.

Bloom's boy trouble...

Unedited: At night in her room, Bloom says that she doesn't want to see Sky anymore, and thinks he has no reason to be jealous of her being with Avalon. Later, she, Tecna and Flora walk across the forest, as Bloom tells Tecna, "You and Timmy never argue, and you know he'll never let you down." (Remember this bit for later.)

Edited: At night in her room, Bloom suspects that Sky is going to break up with her. Later, she, Tecna and Flora walk across the forest, as Bloom is all, "Sky's sweet, sensitive, and nice, but who cares?"

Sky tries calling Bloom again:

Unedited: Sky gets, in a generic-female voice: "You may leave a message after the tone, but not if it's you Sky", prompting Sky to comment: "Magic makes automated messaging systems so frustrating." Sky goes out to the balcony and thinks "Girls are so selfish it's unreal."

Edited: Sky gets a recorded message from the Winx, and Sky leaves a message confirming that "I'll see you tomorrow" (when in fact, it's supposed to be today that he's meeting Bloom) Sky goes out to the balcony to practice what he's going to say to her.

RF gets attacked and stuff...

Unedited: A male voice makes the announcement.
Edited: A female voice makes the announcement.

Unedited: Bloom uses a fire-bubble to defend herself from the Trix's attacks.
Edited: Tecna tells Bloom to use a "Griselda bubble".

I imagined that some of the viewers would like the Griselda mention, and indeed, I got a response calling it keeping continuity.

The Trix take on Bloom, Tecna, and a couple Specialists:

Unedited: Everyone gets knocked out, so Icy can concentrate on the problem at hand.

Edited: Icy has Darcy cast a non-aggression spell on the others, so Icy can concentrate on the problem at hand.

Okay, three things. One, there's no sign of Darcy doing anything to anyone. Two, Timmy is still firing his gun later (and missing). And three, I personally think it makes what happens next more meaningful to their relationship...

Unedited: Tecna is shocked that Timmy is just letting the Trix walk past him with the Codex (even though he had his reasons: They had Gloomix, and it was three against one), and yells, "YOU'RE A COWARD!" Runs off.

Edited: Timmy just lets the Trix run (supposedly because of the non-aggression spell). Tecna decides to get help and runs off.

I thought that it was dramatic, and that this incident ultimately proves more meaningful to their relationship. One of the replies, however, thought it was out-of-character for Tecna to expect Timmy to shoot the Trix, and for her to just run away like that, and preferred Darcy's spell over OOC Tec.

On to that famous edit, and tons of virtual ink have been spilled on this particular change, preferring the edit over the original, because the unedited version was perceived as making Bloom even more of a Mary Sue:

Unedited: Sky gets zapped and Darcy comments on how Gloomix makes it almost boring. Later, Flora mentions no pulse, as the witches fly off. Bloom resurrects him. Bloom hugs Sky. Cue empty shot of RF. End.

Edited: Sky gets zapped, and Darcy comments that Icy just put Sky in a 100-year sleep... minimum. But not only does the edited version retains Flora mentioning no pulse, but also adds Bloom saying he isn't breathing. Bloom "resurrects" him. Sky proposes for her to be his girlfriend, and she accepts. Witches fly off. End.

I don't like that 'At the time' thinking that 4Kids did. Shows that they don't think ahead.

Posted by: mightymarty2 Oct 21 2012, 7:57 AM

Its never been that clear cut before for me but the ineddited version (rai) is so much better than 4 kids

Posted by: SpiderBraids Oct 25 2012, 1:35 AM

The only real difference in 2x11 was that they get the whole Tecna and Timmy issue out of the way first.

Unedited: In the middle of the episode, Timmy complains to Brandon about being locked out of Tecna's computer. Timmy thinks that it's because she doesn't think he's a hero (because of what happened last episode). Then Brandon gives tips on how to improve himself. We don't follow this up until episode 13.

Edited: We begin with Timmy complaining about Tecna blocking his IMs. Brandon suggests that Tecna might want to give him chase, adding tips on how to improve himself. We get the episode 13 scene somewhere in the middle.

I thought "Timmy is a coward" made for better conflict than "Timmy doesn't talk about anything else but computers", but one of the replies suggested it was really just an excuse for her not making the first move, and thought it made the relationship interesting. (I also got a lengthy explanation of why this is better than Flora/Helia's similar plotline.)

Next episode...

Unedited: We see Jared put a picture of Musa in his bag. Later, Jared arrives to go out with Musa. Jared tells Musa that he wants to talk with someone who's been through the simulator for an article he's writing. After they return, Stella asks Musa about every single detail of the date, and the guy. Bloom thinks she's being too nosy.

Edited: We hear Jared asking around for Riven, and seeing that no one's there, he puts a picture of Musa in his bag. Later, Jared arrives to go out with Musa. Jared tells Musa that Stella set him up with her. After they return, Stella asks Musa what she thinks about her matchmaking. Bloom thinks she's being too nosy.

I personally didn't like the change for Stella. The original shows how Stella is the resident gossipmonger, while the new version makes her seem even nosier than in the original. I did get a reply saying that this was something Stella would do, though...

Convergence homework. Bloom and Stella are the surprise package of the day, since they don't even have a project like the others, when it could be argued that they should have aced it easily.

Unedited: B/S couldn't figure it out, and Bloom ends with saying, "Fire and light are similar in more ways than one." (so as to day, "So, how come we don't even have a project like the very different Flora and Tecna do?") FG explains that they have to understand their powers first. In short, Bloom's powers are the Flame of Life (thereby explaining her healing powers in the last two episodes). Stella's powers are the Light of Vision (light that bursts forth to enlighten so others can understand).

Edited: B/S said that they were trying to converge their powers and then they got into a fight on how to do it. FG explains that they need to have perfect harmony blah blah blah.

Later, they're at the sim chamber.

Unedited: Stella is sure about succeeding in tomorrow's exam: "The five of us will make a megablast." However, there are six of them there. Layla is offended, and crying. Musa is mad that Stella implicitly left her out.

Edited: Stella cheerily proposes a slumber party to share friendship stories, but Layla is offended, and runs out of the simulator crying. Musa doesn't understand why, but she's mad at Stella all the same. Stella doesn't understand either.

On the one hand, Stella shouldn't be that stupid to forget that there are six of them and not five like last year. On the other, suddenly it doesn't make sense for Layla to run off like that. Then again, the next scene tries to fix it by suggesting that she doesn't have any friendship stories to share, because she hasn't had a friend in a long time... (Back in the day, I thought that Layla would be enthusiastic, not apprehensive, about the chance to make new friends...)

Slumber party:

Unedited: Stella has a flashback to 5th grade, when she had a crush on the most handsome prince at school, and when his girlfriend broke her leg, she was hoping that he'd dance with her at the prom instead. Instead, he was caring for her broken leg instead. After the hacking, Stella briefly discusses Riven with Musa ("I don't think that Riven would ever be interested in a tomboy like me" "Judging from the way he looks at you, or doesn't, he is"), followed by a nice scene of Layla dressed up as a warrior.

Edited: Stella has a flashback to 5th grade, when she had a crush on the most handsome prince at school, and she cast a spell to break his girlfriend's leg (she was only meaning to give her a breakout of acne). She was hoping that he'd dance with him at the prom instead. Instead, he was caring for her broken leg instead. After the hacking, we only have Stella's brief discussion with Musa, and not the bit with Layla as a warrior.

Exam time... and here comes Darcy?

Unedited: New!Pally fears that cutting power to the crystals in the sim would result in backlash that would cause them to lose their powers.

Edited: Here, the backlash would be even worse, because it would make the girls disappear altogether (along with everything else in the sim).

I imagined other viewers would like the danger of disappearing altogether, and think that losing their powers would be nothing new under the sun. Indeed, I got a reply wondering why it was so easy to lose your powers.

Unedited: Jared gets captured with rope.

Edited: Jared gets captured with some sort of magical hoop. (It should be noted that on the original broadcast, 4Kids forgot to replace the rope in one shot. It was corrected for reruns and the DVD, though.)

Posted by: SpiderBraids Oct 31 2012, 3:50 PM

On to 2x13...

Unedited: Layla is being given orders. And more orders. And more. And then, all the people giving her orders turn into a bunch of Darkars. Cut to the bit with Piff.

Edited: Layla is being yelled at for dancing with peasants. Then she's being given orders to go to the ballroom and stuff. They do show one person having glowing eyes, but then cut out the Darkars.

I thought it made more sense to show the Darkars, since it was the most obvious thing making Layla have nightmares. However, I got a reply suggesting that she must have been having nightmares before the Darkar incident, because she was bonded to Piff and her sleeping powers.

Unedited: Stella and Layla are tired and want to cut class and things. Bloom and Flora are not interested. Musa comes in with mail. A Charmogram for Stella, a mystery letter for Flora and a letter from Bloom's earth parents. Meanwhile, she mentions that Tecna is having breakfast with Timmy right now (the scene used in 2x11 in the 4K version is shown later). After reading her letter, Bloom says, "I think I just got a great idea." Bloom explains in the next scene, on the bus in Gardenia, that Vanessa is testifying in court against the evil businessmen who burned down her shop (back in 1x13), and Bloom wants to give her support.

Edited: Stella and Layla want to cut class and go to earth with Bloom. Bloom says she needed special permission to go out of the realm. Blah blah, Flora is not interested in cutting class. Musa comes in with mail. In this case, it's invitations to the RF concert. After 4K cuts out the tail-end of the cafeteria scene, Bloom explains on the bus that she wants to talk to her mom about the search for her parents.

I was ambivalent about this change: they cut out a reference to 1x13, but insert a reference to the upcoming RF concert (2x15). I got a reply thinking the future reference was nice and the court thing was boring...

Unedited: Tune whines about some boy's dirty hands. Then Musa and co run into some cops. Layla decides to talk with them. Layla explains that they're from an out of town school, and when the cop asks if they have permission to be here, she replies, "Certainly sir, if you like we can give you our parents' numbers and you can check." The cop decides to get off their case. Stella congratulates Layla on her act, but Tune tells Stella that that wasn't an act. Tune adds: "She's a master of etiquette!"

Edited: Tune fears some boy. "Someone control that child!" Then Musa and co run into some cops. Layla speaks troll language at them. The cop realizes she's an out of towner, and gets off her case. Stella thinks it's awesome. End scene.

While I thought it was a bit illogical how the cop got off their case so easily instead of asking for Layla's parents' numbers, I still thought it seemed silly to replace Layla's perfectly-intelligible dialog with gobbledygook. However, I got a few reasons justifying the change in reply (such as the issue with the phone numbers).

(Bonus note: In some versions, when the cop first shows up, they show Layla in her regular outfit, rather than the one she's wearing on this trip. However, on other versions, she has the correct outfit. http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a77/Rover_Wow/wccuts/LaylaShirt2x13.png)

Unedited: At Bloom's house, Mom talks about testifying against the guys who burned her flower shop last season.

Edited: At Bloom's house, Mom talks about getting help on fixing up her flower shop.

4Kids cuts out another brief reference to 1x13:

Unedited: Bloom and Stella are outside of the club. Bloom sees the auras above the guys' heads, and immediately knows that Layla and Musa are in trouble.

Edited: Bloom and Stella are outside of the club. Bloom thinks that Layla and Musa are in trouble.

4K changes and/or removes the punks' weapons:

Unedited: One held a chain, two others held a bottle and a twig.

Edited: The bottle and twig are no more, and the chain is now a ribbon.

Punishment:

Unedited: The punishment makes more sense since all of them cut class without permission. Layla tells Flora that she hasn't had a friend since Anne moved out. We have a short flashback to Layla's earth trip. Flora and Layla then talk about Helia.

Edited: Because of the punishment, they'll be missing a potions fair. Flora talks to Layla about Helia, adding "I wanted to give him the letter, but in my realm, girls don't really make the first move. It's kind of a rule." We do not get the flashback.

Posted by: SpiderBraids Nov 7 2012, 3:41 PM

A big complaint about this episode is an entire subplot that got cut out.

Unedited: There is a subplot in which Musa fights AND BEATS Stormy using a rain dance she learned from Layla.

Edited: This subplot is stripped down to its bare essentials (omitting the "learned from Layla" angle)... and then put into the next episode.

However, an even bigger complaint is related to this edit.

Unedited: Diaspro rants to Flora. She finds it unfair that Bloom of all people rescued her, but her biggest rant is that after all the hard work and all she's learned to be a good princess (unlike Bloom), it's only fair for her to marry a prince. Flora: "We understand." Chatta is all "But there are tons of princes out there."

Edited: Flora has convinced Diaspro to be a better leader. She won't punish people who dress below her standards. Flora's all "Um... okay." Where Chatta tells her that there are other princes around, she now agrees with her comment that hair accessories are essential.

When this episode was first aired, one of the viewers was very disappointed that they changed Diaspro's dialog, and figured that she would hold a grudge against Bloom. (Nevertheless, this viewer thought that the episode was a wasted opportunity overall, dialog change or not: it almost completely ignores the issue of Sky having to rescue his ex for a reference to the Gatchamen.)

Other minor edits, beginning with the opening scene...

Unedited: After a brief meaningless scene of Musa walking around while a few background fairies argue over pixie pets, Yoshinoya has outsourced the kidnapping to the Technoninjas instead of his own.

Edited: We skip Musa's scene (it's meaningless, after all). Yoshinoya, seeing that Diaspro's already been 'napped, decides to just write the ransom note.

Zing is tagging along with Sky and co.

Unedited: Zing wants to see the Technoninjas on Sky's planet.

Edited: Zing wants to bond with some fairy.

Some forest somewhere.

Unedited: Sky explains that Yoshinoya has always wanted to get rid of him (he IS after all a prince), so he switched identities with Brandon.

Edited: This angle of the switch is not pursued, since we have already explained the switch when it first came to light in 1x17.

Posted by: mightymarty2 Nov 7 2012, 6:42 PM

I don't understand why the reason for the Sky, Brandon switch would change in reason or why they would not be more honest. As it would be a better reason than to see whats its like to be non royal

Posted by: SpiderBraids Nov 10 2012, 7:17 AM

Huh. Would have expected to see comments on the Diaspro dialog change...

Anyways, moving on to 2x15. This whole episode was really switched around a lot, so I'll go by the order in which the events are shown in the original.

Unedited: (right at the start) Musa walks out on stage. Her voice is empty. The audience is robots. Spotlights go out. During the above, she narrates thusly: "Bloom thinks my voice is fantastic, and that the audience will cheer, dance, and sing along with me. She's convinced that tonight, the lights in my career will be switched on one after another."

Edited: (after a scene of Musa and Layla at RF, and before the 2nd commercial) We start with a shot of Musa sleeping. (This clip is actually from a S1 episode, the one with the nightmares.) We see the sequence above with a slight green tint, without Musa's narration, but instead with an announcement as she comes on stage, and with the sound of lone clapping added to the end as the spotlights are going out. Back to the S1 clip, Musa wakes up and she talks to Tecna (who, like Bloom, is actually absent from the original version, except in crowd scenes). Musa tells Tecna of her nightmare, mentioning that she thinks the one person clapping was her Mom.

Next!

Unedited: (after the above) Musa is on stage and she looks up in the sky. We see her at her mom's tomb placing flowers. We then see a scene at mom's first concert. (We'll revisit this tomb a few more times in the story, as well as the end scene.)

Edited: (after the 2nd commercial) Same as above, minus mom's first concert, but we only visit the tomb two times: here, and at the end. They do use a shot of tears falling on the grave from a different tomb visit, though.

Let's get this party started!

Unedited: (after the witches stick lipstick to Brandon) Layla dances in her bedroom for Musa and Francis (and a few pixies) to see. This leads straight into a nice sequence at the concert where she dances with Mirta and Francis and blows the crowd away.

Edited: (before Musa's nightmare) Layla dances in her bedroom for Musa and Francis (and a few pixies) to see. Musa says, "You're gonna blow them away!" Scene goes straight to the "nightmare" above.

I thought the dance would have been fantastic to retain, but I got another one of those "things must be cut out" replies, that also added that the dance was boring.

Rehearsals!

Unedited: (after Layla's dance) Musa is already rehearsing the song that she performs at the concert. Stella says she rehearsed it 20 times in a row already. Musa wants to practice the sax solo. Stella throws her the sax. "Are you nuts?! This saxophone costs a fortune!"

Edited: (after the witches stick lipstick to Brandon) Musa is considering different songs for her concert. After Stella thinks that the last song she just sung (a song from 1x18, and not the one she performs) was the one she should do, Musa thinks she should do one with a sax solo, so Stella throws her the sax. "Be a little more careful Stella, that is my dad's saxophone."

I imagine that some of the viewers would think it was more sentimental for Musa to keep her dad's sax, but we later on find out that he destroyed all the musical instruments in the house.

Dad shows up. More minor editing... (In both cases, after the rehearsals)

Unedited: First they discuss about Riven, and daddy insults him (this part is bookended with scenes at the tomb). Then they talk about Musa and music. Dad decides to transfer her.

Edited: The discussion is exclusively about Musa and music. Dad threatens to remove her. There are no scenes at the tomb.

Flashback time! (Follows the above)

Unedited: We head straight into a flashback of Musa's dad watching future mom's first show from the argument scene. Daddy pitches song to future mom. He hadn't written anything, so he had to write a song overnight. There is also a brief scene of dad counting banknotes, and seeing that he's only got a few, in between the shot of the parents' wedding, and a shot of another concert. Near the end of the flashback, we briefly see Layla and Musa standing on the RF balcony watching birds fly by, before we see the rest of the flashback.

Edited: The flashback is preceded with the scene of Layla and Musa watching the birds (that short snippet of Musa talking with Layla there also remains in the same spot, however, so we actually see that short snippet twice). The flashback to mom's first night is shown here, followed by most of the flashback as originally shown. Daddy hadn't actually finished the song he pitched, so he worked all night to finish it, and it was called "Magic in My Heart". The scene of dad counting his money is no longer there, however. The flashback no longer addresses financial trouble.

Also:

Unedited: Musa's dad is a young musician who married an opera singer. There are no mentions of them recording any albums, though...

Edited: Musa's dad is a prince who got disowned when he became a musician, who married an opera singer who rejected her classical training. They mention recording a few albums, including a "stripped down, almost classical" album.

I got a reply thinking that the 4K version made for a more interesting story than the "boring" struggling musicians of the original, but IMO, the fact they were struggling musicians plays into how Musa's mom died. After the flashback:

Unedited: "You know, I think your dad is just scared that if you follow a musical path, you'll end up like your mother." "Oh Layla. I want to be the fairy of music, and I don't want to lose either you guys or my dad." "That'll never happen Musa. Just give a great show and don't worry about anything else. Okay?" Insert two stills of Dad running through flowers with Musa, and Musa looking happy, with Musa's V/O on top, before time-lapsing into the evening. (Leads into the concert)

Edited: "Sounds like it was too painful for him to be around music, and based on what he said this afternoon... it still is." "What do I do? There's no way I can perform tomorrow. I don't want to leave Alfea, and I don't want to lose my friends!" "Then we'll cancel the show, and I'll extend my dance to fill up your time slot. We can work on it tonight, together. Everything's going to be okay, sweetie." We time-lapse into the evening. (Leads into the partial dance scene)

I thought that in the unedited, Musa's dad does seem to have a legitimate reason not to let her sing, while in the edited, it just seems like he's banning her for the heck of it. However, I received a reply that thought dad's reasons in both versions are illogical, saying that Musa was unlikely to die like her mother. I pointed out that it was the financial issues that troubled her father, but I got a reply saying that her parents would have had plenty of money.

Unedited: (after the above) Stella and Musa have their duet first (where she manages to knock over the mike stand a few times), then the RF show, then Musa's gig. Musa fights Stormy, and then we fade to the end scene after it's done.

Edited: (after the visit to the tomb) Coda leads off with the RF show, then Musa's gig, and then the Stormy fight. We then have the duet (without Stella knocking over the mike stand) before the end scene at the tomb.

Time for Musa to shine!

Unedited: Layla makes a point of two elf muses coming in to watch Musa perform. These two elf muses are the same two who start singing in the teachers' section. This is why Musa is freaking out backstage. After she comes out, Musa announces, "This is a song that I wrote, called 'A Sky Without Moon and Stars'."

Edited: The shot of the two elf muses coming in is shown right before the RF show. The backstage part is edited down a bit, with no mention of those two elf muses either here or anywhere in the episode. Musa announces "This is the first song my dad ever wrote for my mom."

I got a reply liking both songs, but adding that having Musa sings her father's song instead of her own was a good edit for being more poignant.

Alright, time for the Musa/Stormy fight!

Unedited: "Fire away Musa, but think what your sonic bombs will do to these people. Do you really want to hurt them???"

Edited: "Oh, we're not fighting Musa. You're surrendering, or I'm destroying your father RIGHT NOW!"

Unedited: There's a brief shot of the elf muses explaining that the power she gets from music will overwhelm the witch.

Edited: The shot of the elf muses is removed, and Riven is explaining it to the spectators instead.

The playlist:

Unedited: We have original songs for both the duet and Musa's song, and an original melody for Musa's fight.

Edited: We only have an original song for Musa, while the fight re-uses "Feels Like Magic" (1x02), and the duet is "This is the Beat" (a song used for Winx promos).

I got an opinion saying that the sentimental value for Musa's song makes up for the duet's recycled song.

Now that we've dealt with what was in the original, let's deal with what WASN'T in the original. The first couple minutes of the edited episode is actually clips cut from 2x14.

Edited: The show leads off with the Stormy/Musa battle, where Stormy is looking for the Codex with a spying spell. The battle is shown in one go in the US version, instead of as short snippets interspersed with the main plot. After this sequence, is a scene that originally comes before this big battle. Layla decides to show off her old-worldly dance (she doesn't identify it as a rain dance, as it's no longer relevant), and she explains that she used to sneak out of the palace and learn these dances from street performers (which annoys Tune a bit). It's implied that she never told her parents.

Unedited: Even with all they showed, they still left some stuff on the cutting room floor. There was a brief scene of Musa spotting the spying spell in the sky at Alfea, and Musa asking Palladium about it. Also, as mentioned above, the Layla scene actually comes before the big battle: Musa is nervous about the upcoming RF concert, but Layla decides to teach her a rain dance she could use (in the original episode, this immediately follows them learning about a rain dance). She explains that she used to learn these dances from farmers (prompting Tune to comment "How primitive"). And of course the dance she learned comes into play during the big battle.

I'm saving my comments on Diaspro for when they change 'I'm betting that peasant girl Bloom is getting all the attention now' to 'Why won't Sky love me?' in Season 3.

Also, the Musa episode....
Dear God, the Musa episode....
The prime example of how one, ill-tought-out changed line in one of the very first episodes can come back to BITE you.

Posted by: Abby Nov 12 2012, 12:42 AM

This is one of my favorite episodes of winx club ever, I hate how much was changed. I much prefer the original duet song (I actually have it in my music library) but there are a few edits that I think I like better like the whole adding a little more drama to Musa's back story.

Posted by: SpiderBraids Nov 15 2012, 1:41 AM

On to 2x16, where the girls go to earth...

Unedited: Jolly passes a random tarot reader. She thinks he's ancient, and not in a nice way.

Edited: Jolly passes a random tarot reader. She thinks he's an impostor.

Here's Mitzi...

Unedited: Just before Mitzi's arrival, the Winx meet a girl dressed like a nurse (replete with syringe), and after she comments, "You think she'd give you the time of day? As if she'd waste her time chatting up little girls like you", Bloom looks visibly teed off.

Edited: Nurse girl has had her syringe removed. She tells the Winx, "Don't take offense, the truth is I would probably would be in reform school too if my father wasn't famous and connected." Bloom being teed off has been removed.

Unedited: The CD the DJ was playing for entrance repeatedly skipped.

Edited: Listen to the song the DJ plays for the entrance. How ironic! And even more ironic is how the song he was supposed to play was "The Most Beautiful Girl in the World", which just adds to the "commentary".

I got a reply that thought the 4K song was better, and yeah, that sounds right... I also did get another response thinking that the "incidental" music turning out to be the DJ's skipping CD was funny, though...

Flora is being asked about their costumes.

Unedited: "How do you make the wings? They're so real!" "Um, it's a secret"

Edited: "Where did you get these costumes?" "Uh, Internet? </Timmy Turner>"

Okay, next...

Unedited: After Mitzi notes that Musa seems to be taking to herself, Musa answers the door, and takes a box of pumpkin cakes from a guy dressed as Spiderman. Musa tries one of the cakes, and clutches her tummy as if she had a tummyache. Freddy tells her she got the earwax-flavored one. Jolly (who Musa had been talking to, and remember 2x13 and how pixies are invisible) decides to prank Mitzi by making those cakes fly.

Edited: The cake scene is gone.

Incidentally, this is the 2nd time 4K's gotten rid of a character dressed as Spiderman: Zing was dressed as Spiderman in The Wrong Righters (for good measure, she also dressed as Doc Ock at one point). I got a reply talking about copyright issues concerning the costumes in the episode.

The "Fourth Witch" is heading over to haunt the Winx. But Stella is above Mitzi's prank...

Unedited: "Come on, look at the way she carries herself!" (With Stella knowing her fashion, this is kind of expected.)

Edited: Stella complains about the perfume Mitzi was wearing, just like Jolly did earlier.

I got a response preferring the perfume version, saying that posture shouldn't be a way to recognize someone.

Posted by: mightymarty2 Nov 15 2012, 8:27 AM

It does make more sence recognising someone from smell of perfume over posture as Mitzi's posture was not that different, if at all to the others involved

Moving on to 2x17. This change sets the tone for many of the changes here (and I have to admit that I was unaware of it originally):

Unedited: FG sends the Winx to CT to protect the Codex, and Grif is offering them classes in the dark arts in return.
Edited: FG just sends them to CT to learn about the dark arts, telling them a story about a gnoll living with trolls.

Unedited: Bloom: "The witches helped us fight the Trix last year." Musa: "Don't forget that they also helped the Trix fight us!" (flashback to 1x09)
Edited: Bloom: "Witches do have some good qualities." Musa: "Is ganging up on a person and humilating them a good quality?" (flashback to 1x09)

We meet two teachers.

Unedited: The two teachers introduce themselves as Edilthrude and Zarathustra.

Edited: "What do you call a fairy without her wings?" "Dragon food." "And what do you call a fairy with her wings?" "Dragon food."

Classroom.

Unedited: Flora asks why they don't pair off in class. As everyone else laughs at the idea, Grif replies, "Team members can betray one another. So a witch trusts no one but herself." (which doesn't really make sense re: The Trix) Mirta finds her old room, but there's no reply from Lucy. Later, Musa and Bloom are doing good at the exercise. No reasons are given for Musa, but Grif comments that Bloom has summoned her dark energy so easily. Bloom mentions she had a bad week.

Edited: Flora says she would take a miserable abandoned kitten in as a pet. Everyone laughs at the idea, and Grif replies that its misery would allow her to cast skin-rot spells. Mirta finds her old room, but Lucy wants her to stay away. Later, Musa and Bloom are doing good at the exercise. Musa says she's using witches as her own despicable image, while Bloom's dark energy ball is darker than everyone else's (or even senior witches'): she mentions she had a bad week. 4Kids has changed Bloom's dark energy (http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a77/Rover_Wow/wccuts/2x17-DBEdit.jpg, http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a77/Rover_Wow/wccuts/2x17-DBEdit2.jpg).

Given that they made a point of showing Bloom doing good at this exercise, AND (in the US) Grif mentioning "Bad things happen to those who can't control their dark energy", you'd think that the Dark Bloom incident would directly play on that.

Fast forward to later in the library.

Unedited: The Winx are trying to get the witches to help them protect the Codex. Tecna shows the witches a picture of the Trix from her PDA. Later... Lucy: "Rumor has it that Bloom gave the witches exactly what they wanted!" Stella: "How could you say that about her???" Tecna: "Um, technically she did." Stella: "Whose side are you on?!"

Edited: The Winx are trying to work with the witches on a class project. Tecna's picture of the Trix http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a77/Rover_Wow/wccuts/2x17-Tecna.jpg, and she talks about a kind of plant found in a certain valley instead. Later, Musa tries to point out the Winx saved them last semester, but Lucy replies: "Wouldn't have had to if Bloom hadn't given up the Dragonfire." Stella: "She kinda has a point." Tecna: "The Dragonfire was TAKEN!" (Stella repeats this point for Lucy)

Later still...

Unedited: After the Trix have come across Lucy, the teachers make comments on the Winx getting the witches to help. The Winx protest to Zara against the class they've been "set up" for, after finding out from Mirta that this class is part of dark magic class.
Edited: The teachers' scene has been removed, and the Winx are tricked into spelling themselves with a catfight spell.

I thought Dub Zara was being REALLY DUMB for tricking the Winx into falling out with each other when they're trying to save the universe, but (here's where that first change I was unaware of comes in), it was pointed out to me that if the teachers didn't know there was a threat, then they had free reign to do as they pleased with the Winx. (They would have known of the threat in the original, but not in the dub)

The Winx find out the Trix are already here, and have to come up with a plan quickly:

Unedited: Musa thinks that the witches might be hiding the Trix. (She doesn't trust them, see?)

Edited: Musa thinks of a plan where they pretend to know where the Codex is. (Everyone else's plans are the same as in the unedited, and when Stella runs off, Bloom suspects it's from the catfight spell)

Tecna looks for the Codex. She finds the heart on her map.

Unedited: Tecna indicates the heart, but does not make the assumption that the Codex is there. The Trix come in. Tecna is invoking her transformation, but Icy's spell precludes that from happening. Later, Zing, dressed as Skrat from Ice Age, shoves an acorn into the ice.

Edited: Tecna says, "All the energy flows to and from one place. The Codex must be there!" (This is with no rhyme or reason, and even SHE will admit it in the next ep.) The Trix come in. Tecna is about to attack, but Icy's Ice Coffin precludes the attack from happening. We do not see Skrat!Zing shove her acorn.

Continuing with 2x18...

Unedited: Griffin comes out and declares, "It seems you have found my personal sauna!" Darcy is all "Wait, this isn't the Codex Vault?" Tecna is shocked to have miscalculated... it makes no sense since she never said the Codex was in the heart, and yet this (and her later "Fairies and logic don't mix!" comment) would make it seem that she did.

Edited: Grif (on the Codex): "It's not here Icy, or anywhere where the likes of you will find it" Darcy: "The likes of US?" The miscaclulation reaction is cut out, even though it actually would make sense here.

After the girls take Bloom back to their CT dorm:

Unedited: Tecna blames herself for the incident.

Edited: Tecna tells everyone "What matters is that we have to work together."

One of the biggest plot problems is that except for Flora/Layla, there seems to be no rhyme or reason to the fairies' pairings.

Unedited: A teacher points this out, and Grif explains, "It will either strengthen their bond or destroy it. Either way, they'll learn something."

Edited: In the scene that they explain this originally, Grif explains that they're using the Winx as live bait to buy them time. But they never point out or mention why they're paired like so.

Neither version makes sense IMO. I did get a reply justifying Grif's reasoning in the original, but not an opinion on 4K cutting it out.

Stella isn't doing too well with Musa:

Unedited: In the cafeteria, Stella decides that they might miss the witches if they're both on the move, so she decides to just sit here. Musa does not like that "battle plan". The gist: "You're just going to sit there? What if they do come?" Stella: "Then I'd be well-rested and ready to fight." Musa: "You probably wouldn't even notice!"

Edited: In the cafeteria, Stella says to the gist of, "My musical taste is better than yours, and I'm sitting here until you admit it!" Musa: "We're trying to save the universe, and you want to argue over top fives?" (They continue to argue even after they get walled up!)

I'd argue that arguing over a battle plan is more plot-relevant. That said, I reckoned that some fans would actually prefer Musa and Stella arguing over frivolous things... and indeed, I got a reply suggesting it lightened the mood and was more in character for them.

2x19, and Tecna rants to Flora about Timmy:

Unedited: Timmy wants to talk to Tecna, but she leaves and walks into a hallway with Flora. T: "How can I like someone who behaves so... illogically?" F: "What exactly did he do?" T: "What he didn't do, you mean" F: "He's just shy, that's all" T: "Being shy is just an excuse. He's supposed to be a hero. If he wanted to do something, he'd do it!"

Edited: Timmy tells Tecna that he's doing some IT work for FG. After Tecna walks into the hallway with Flora, she complains that everyone treats her like a machine. After Flora points out that she doesn't, Tec then narrows it down to Timmy, and then continues her rant saying, "Why can't he come up to me and say 'I'm here because I like you and want to win your heart' or something? I do have one!" (There's a bit of a freeze frame while she says the above.)

At the end:

Unedited: After Bloom hugs Lockette, there's a scene in the archives where the girls are putting the books back. Transcript in spoiler box:

Spoiler!
Concorda: Excuse me for a moment everyone: Now that the location of the archive is no longer a secret, there is absolutely no reason whatsoever why we can't all help clean up this mess.
(Bloom puts away a book)
Flora: We knew it wasn't really you doing all that mean stuff.
Musa: Yeah, but I thought that Timmy thing was really funny.
Tecna: I understand that Timmy can be really irritating sometimes, but why would you hang him upside down?
Bloom: You'd have to ask Dark Bloom, because this one doesn't have a clue.
(Gang laughs)

Edited: This scene was cut out entirely, so it goes from Bloom hugging Lockette to LD getting the Codex piece.

Moving on to 2x20...

Unedited: The episode begins with FG having a short flashback to giving the pixie elders the jewelry in 2x07, and thinking that this may be their best hope. Flora (on LD taking over): "That would be so awful..." Stella, after imitating Flo's line: "Then do something about it instead of just standing there complaining."

Edited: We just skip to FG calling the Winx in. Flora: "I hope we can do it..." Stella, after imitating Flo's line: "C'mon Flora, with that kind of attitude, we might as well just give up."

Subplot involving Palladium and Avalon.

Unedited: Palladium tells Livy about the sick Avalon and wants her to go back to Alfea to have WizGiz prepare the lab, and Livy mentions there is a universal antidote. The "Sora Alga" grows in Pixie Village. Livy is about to go off when Palladium tells Livy that she's forbidden from heading the Pixie Village, but then he thinks that since Darkar is focusing on the Winx, he decides to send her on her way, and tells her to keep a low profile. She promises to be back in "Two shakes of a snake's tail. ... Hold it, I mean to say two shakes of a shark's tail? ... Or, um, is it a pig's tail?" HEH!!

Edited: Palladium wants an antidote from the Pixie Village. Palladium tells Livy: "I know you're not supposed to go there, but this is very grave." Livy is about to go off when Palladium tells Livy that he hasn't told her yet what it is. He tells her it's the essence of the Flower of Life, and before she goes off says, "Understood, you can count on me sir... I should have said 'Understood, you can count on me Prof.'... or uh, Professor?"

Moving on to the Resort Realm eps now, starting with 2x20: While the other Winx are playing volleyball, Layla is gathering firewood, while Stella is just sitting on a mat.

Unedited: The first thing Stella asks Layla is why she isn't playing... "It's right up your alley..."

Edited: The first thing Stella asks Layla is when they're going to the hotel.

Night time. Sky is guarding the tent while talking with Bloom.

Unedited: He exposits to the tone of, "There are noises out here, and it's too bad because it would have been romantic out here tonight." And he delivers it in a way that makes me think of his "We'd implode" line from 2x05 (dub).

Edited: He explains stuff about some animals guarding their mates through the night. I got a reply saying how romantic that comment was.

Layla finds out about the divorce of Stella's parents and later, Stella wants to talk with Layla.

Unedited: Layla wants Stella to send a postcard to her parents. Stella says, "Give me a few minutes..." Bloom tells Layla about her parents' divorce. Later, Layla cries in the forest. Gist: "I didn't know that Stella's parents were divorced. I don't know anything about them at all!" Bloom is preparing the fashion show that Stella had suggested the day before, and is surprised that she herself won't be participating.

Edited: Layla wants Stella to send a postcard to her parents. Stella is upfront about her situation: "It's postcards Layla. My parents are separated." Bloom adds that it's been tough for her the last few years. Later, Layla cries in the forest: "I'm just no good with friendships." Later, Bloom is surprised that Stella doesn't want to do a makeover on Tecna (Stella never suggests the fashion show in this version), as Stella goes off to find Layla.

Stella gets her Charmix:

Unedited: Stella and Layla comment that the Charmix looks like a handheld mirror. Stella says, "My Charmix knows me well!" We get both a regular transformation followed by a Charmix transformation, and her attacks seem to be mirror-based.

Edited: There are no comments about the Charmix looking like a mirror, and Stella now says, "I totally got a Charmix!" We go into the Winx-to-Charmix transformation straight from her casuals.

I got a reply that liked the mirror bit and wished that the edited would have left it in.

2x21, and the biggest edits in this episode both tie in to how they've changed why Tecna didn't like Timmy. Timmy says he has a plan...

Unedited: We pan over to a pouty Tecna asking Digit "Given his past performance, what are the odds of that being true?!" Brandon: "When Timmy's got tactics, the Specialists listen."

Edited: We briefly pan over to a pouty Tecna but immediately jumpcut to the explanation of this plan.

I've read summaries suggesting that Timmy must have said something different in Italian for Tecna to react like that. In fact, he does say the same thing; it's Tecna's reaction being curtailed (and the changes in 2x10) that makes it look random.

At the end:

Unedited: Tecna praises about how Timmy helped assemble the Specialists' plan together and stuff. And she then says, "I never liked not liking you!" Timmy tells her "Did you know that sentence sounded illogical?"

Edited: This is Tecna's quote directly from the dub... "I feel like I almost lost you today and it made me realize I've been mad at you 'cause you wouldn't make the first move, but really it's just me being scared of stepping up myself and telling you how much I absolutely adore you." (The shot lasts longer than in the unedited, and an animation of tears dripping has been added) Timmy tells her "You're crying but you're not sad... that's illogical."

Somewhere in the middle...

Unedited: Layla walks into a fog bank. She collapses. Later, she gets up. She sees a picture of Piff and Anne. She walks into a cave on this.

Edited: We just see Layla walking into the cave.

Also... the Trix have cornered Sky and Timmy.

Unedited: They decide to all attack at once, while saying what their powers are.

Edited: They asking how the Specs they want to go, and say what their powers are.

I thought someone would reply that the edited makes the witches look more badass (someone did, and in fact, it was apparently among that viewer's favorite parts of the episode), but I kind of prefer the unedited's more pragmatic approach.

Wow... 4kids... after reading this... they edit out a lot of things. Interesting to know! Thanks!

Posted by: sapphire_witch Dec 7 2012, 12:46 PM

Honestly they ruin Winx Club from season 1 to 3. That's why 4Kids licensed for Winx have been revoke. Giving to license to Nick who respect Rai original story

But Winx are not the only series by 4Kids

Posted by: SpiderBraids Dec 10 2012, 7:19 AM

Moving on to 2x23, and Avalon and Griz's exercise:

Unedited: They're fighting a monster. Griz reminds them they'll have to face Lord Darkar eventually. Bloom positions the Winx in front of the monster to wait for her signal, and then they get attacked from the back.

Edited: They're fighting the monster. Griz tells them that they need to use their Charmix. Bloom agrees. But then they just stand there and get attacked from the back first.

Later...

Unedited: Griz is commending Stella, and the rest of the group on how they performed in this exam, and Francis comes in and calls them to FG's room.

Edited: Griz is laying down parameters for the next round (twice as tough, 3 minute time limit), when Francis comes in.

I dunno... while it's good for them to keep training, it's not every day you see Griz actually saying something nice to them.

Over in the village, Jolly is giving a sick Amore a card reading:

Unedited: Jolly: "The cards say that you're never going to get better."

Edited: Jolly's readings now say that she will never fall in love.

And probably the most important moment in this episode that doesn't involve Bloom:

Unedited: Flora says "I love you" to Helia.

Edited: Flora says "I really like you" to Helia.

I got a reply saying it was an excellent change that made the F/H relationship a bit more realistic.

Plot twist, with a side of visual editing:

Unedited: Both the real and fake Avalons wear the same white outfit.

Edited: In FG's office, the real Avalon wears a purple outfit, and Stella (who'd just been with the fake) comments on him changing clothes quickly when he sees the real Avalon.

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a77/Rover_Wow/wccuts/2x23-Avalon.jpg

Also, this ep has two scenes where dub changes in previous episodes are seemingly ignored:
1. Flora doesn't want to tell Helia, but doesn't mention the "girls don't make the first move" rule (2x13 dub change), and
2. Tecna is among those in FG's office talking with FG about Avalon, yet there's no mention of the Sphere of Truth she shot at Fake!Avalon (2x09 dub change)

2x24, where Timmy is outside with the RF ship:

Unedited: Timmy is giving the ship a tune-up for this mission, so it's in tiptop shape.

Edited: Timmy is making adjustments to the ship so that its power doesn't drain in Shadowhaunt... and this ends up being the only time the issues from the mission from earlier in the season are addressed.

Unedited: The girls and pixies talking about going on the rescue mission is followed by Timmy's tune-up, and then a short scene of Darkar with Bloom.

Edited: These two scenes are cut. Timmy mentions the adjustments during the scene where the girls are at the ship.

I was expecting some sort of explanation for why Stella doesn't use her Charmix when Icy makes the Ice Crusher in the first place, rather than Flora. Instead, the only difference between the two versions dealing with this part is this, which makes Stella seem very reckless IMO:

Unedited:
Timmy: Well, we just have to hope that Sky and the others show up before we're completely buried under this snow.
Stella: No way! You can forget about it! It's time to put an end to all this freezing nonsense!
Timmy (pointing at vines): Stella, I'm not sure that's such a great idea...
Stella: Listen Timmy, maybe you like freezing your nose off, but the pixies and I have had it! And we're ready for a red-hot spring thaw.

Edited:
Timmy: We're close to coming up with a solution, Tecna and I just have to make a few more calcuations.
Stella: Forget it! No more stupid calculations! I'm gonna go out there and use my Charmix!
Timmy (pointing at vines): No Stella, we have a plan. Look, it's gonna work...
Stella: You can plan all you want, but I'm in a tubetop dress, and it's ridiculously cold in here, so I'm gonna go fix this right now!

During Brandon and Amentia's fight, Layla is shown drinking tea.

Unedited: (commenting on the fight) Oh my, that does look painful.

Edited: (commenting on the tea) Whoa, this is the best tea I've ever had.

One edit to note in 2x25:

Unedited: Saladin decides to send Codatorta, without giving any specific reason.

Edited: Saladin decides to send Codatorta, because Sal's too old for this.

Oh woah, I've actually read the Cut It Out website a looooong time ago. I always thought some of the edits were rather...odd, but some I guess I understood. Even if to us they seem extreme, there are parents out there who are very strict with what they let their kids watch, and one panty shot could cost a lot of more conservative viewers.

And then there was stuff like Musa's horrible slang, which I always found hilarious and rather endearing.

Posted by: SpiderBraids Dec 25 2012, 3:21 PM

On to the season 2 finale. After Tecna deals with the monsters:

Unedited: After the Specs catch up with Tecna, both Tecna and Timmy say they're going to track the others. Helia says there's no need, and points at a paper crane, which flies off for the Specs to follow. (http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a77/Rover_Wow/wccuts/2x26-crane.jpg)

Edited: Helia now comments on Tecna and Timmy saying the same thing at the same time (as if to prove his point, they both say "Huh?"), and the shot of the flying paper crane is cut out. (Timmy didn't originally say "Huh?" in the original; there is a http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a77/Rover_Wow/wccuts/2x26-TecandTim.jpg in the dub)

Remember those jewels from 2x07? They come into play here:

Unedited: According to the Elders, FG told them to make back-ups of the Codex pieces, and they're the jewelry they're holding right now. Layla sees the puzzle and considers which of the other remaining fairies could solve the puzzle. "Maybe I should get Tecna and her computer, or maybe Musa, she's good at puzzles, or Flora..." As she's considering, Stella says, "Are these colors off or what?" and rearranges the pieces. ""It's just that the colors were clashing, so I moved them around a little bit and..." It turns out to be the solution to the puzzle: Athena: "It's a complex color spectrum analysis problem. No one's ever solved it so fast before." Stel: "See? Fashion sense is a vital skill after all! :)"

Edited: The jewels are referred to as ancient artifacts. Layla sees the puzzle, and Stella brings up a field trip to a museum, and there's something about a civilization that communicated with colors. She rearranges the pieces into the solution: "Stella is quite fluent in hue..." "Maybe Palladium should reconsider my grade :)"

The only part that makes 100% sense in either version is, yes, Stella loves fashion, so she should know what colors go with what. But when I first heard about this (for the edited version), it felt like a bit of dodgy writing to me, because the whole discussion about the field trip just came up out of nowhere. I had a whole discussion with one fan who said otherwise, and (once I found out about the original version and brought that up) preferred Stella applying knowledge rather than effing around.

Unedited: There is a brief flashback to last season's finale during the Realix scene.

Edited: There isn't. http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a77/Rover_Wow/wccuts/2x26-Darkar.jpg

Last edits of the season:

Unedited: FG and Grif toast at the party, and the liquid in their glasses is pink (ish).

Edited: The liquid in their glasses is blue. (http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a77/Rover_Wow/wccuts/2x26-drinking1.jpg)

Unedited: The last shot of the season is Bloom and Sky running in front of Timmy's camera as it goes off. This goes on with Blinky hovering in front of the camera, and then Mirta and Lucy being dragged in front of the camera.

Edited: We only get the Bloom and Sky photo.

Posted by: mightymarty2 Dec 26 2012, 5:01 PM

I think the field trip knowledge is better than colours clashing. Even if we don't see the trip, we don't see every class either.

Posted by: P-girl Dec 26 2012, 7:41 PM

I actually really like the color-spectrum puzzle. It sounds like something Stella should know and feels less like it's pulled from a behind somewhere like the 'Field-trip' one.

Posted by: Abby Jan 7 2013, 11:18 PM

Of course they have to end it with Bloom and Sky though...typical.

Posted by: SpiderBraids Jan 13 2013, 6:51 AM

@P-Girl and @mightymarty2 regarding the color puzzle: P-Girl's "pulled from a behind" response is more or less what I thought about the 4K version of that particular plot point, and mightymarty2's comment is one of the reasons another fan gave in justifying it. http://www.toonzone.net/forums/toonzone-general-animation-discussion/162100-talkback-winx-club-season-finale-ultimate-power-couple-spoilers-2.html has a bit of a discussion on that plot point.

Moving on to season 3, and previously uncharted territory for me, since I never made any comprehensive attempts at comparisons before now. Although the first episode is more notable for the lack of differences (it still has the Beta Academy mention, and I must not have been the only one who expected it to play a major role in the plot), two of the differences are still worth talking about:

Unedited: The villain is named Valtor.
Edited: The villain is named Baltor.

The reason this is notable is the mark the villain gives looks like the letter V. I haven't seen many comments about the mark not making sense, and I suspect it's because the 4K episode aired a while before the original version (don't ask how that happened, though).

Unedited: At the pizzeria, Stella tells Chimera: "That mud brown is a very good colour for you. I suggest you stick with it!"
Edited: Stella tells Chimera: "That pre-teen meets goth look is very appealing on you."

http://www.toonzone.net/forums/toonzone-general-animation-discussion/175387-4k-dstv-talkback-winx-club-season-premiere-princess-ball.html#post2298419 made a comment about Stella not recognizing Chimera's GothLoli style, and I imagine that retaining the original line would not have raised such an issue.

Moving on to 3x02, with three changes this time around, starting at the Hall of the Universe at Stella's palace:

Unedited: Stella says this has always been her favorite part of the palace. Bloom launches into a flashback to the invasion of Domino.
Edited: Stella tells Bloom it can show her any moment in time anywhere in the realms, and Bloom has it show her the invasion of Sparks.

Party time!

Unedited: Flora comments on how Solaria went all out for the Princess Ball.
Edited: Flora mentions Helia's ship breaking down.

The 4K line draws a bit of attention to the fact that out of all the people who'd RSVP'd their invitations last week (a list that included Mirta I might add), only Sky and Brandon showed up.

Radius announces his upcoming marriage to Chimera's mom.

Unedited: Stella: "Why didn't you tell me about this before?" Radius: "Well, I wanted it to be a surprise..." (Stella walks off silently)
Edited: Stella: "Congratulations father." Radius: "You don't sound very happy, what's the matter?" Stella (after walking off): "I'm happy..."

While the 4K version does have potential for some drama, it's sort of undermined by the unedited version not being written that way.

Posted by: SpiderBraids Jan 20 2013, 7:00 AM

Moving on to 3x03...

Unedited: The last minute or so of the previous episode (starting with Brandon and Sky running back to their ship) is repeated at the start.
Edited: 4K starts on Bloom running after Stella.

Bloom sees the guards going after Brandon and Sky.

Unedited: Tecna tells Bloom that the guys can handle them on their own.
Edited: Tecna makes a point that the rain has sapped all their Winx and the guys can handle it.

This creates a whole lot of problems in the tunnel, such as Tecna having power (albeit very minimal) while the others don't when they encounter the spiders, and deciding to make an air bubble to breathe underwater.

Unedited: While walking in the forest looking for Stella's tunnel, Musa asks Stella if they need a spell to see it.
Edited: Stella says "If Brandon saw me like this, as good as a guy he is, you can bet he'd be gone faster than a Solarian sunbeam." Flora: "That's not true. Brandon's not like that" Musa: "All guys are, Flo. It's just their nature."

Later while going through the tunnel, 4K Musa makes this throwaway comment about Stella getting stuck: "Narrow passageway, plus-sized fairy, not good." (Unedited: "It's Stella. She can't get through. We've got to help her. C'mon!") These two comments from Musa received a good deal of criticism.

Unedited: We have a scene on the Specialists' plane, with Bloom telling Sky she needs to contact Alfea and Stella hiding herself from Brandon.
Edited: We only see the plane coming to Alfea.

Stella asks Concorda if the Mirror of Truth will work:

Unedited: "Yes dear. But it will be a dangerous journey. The mirror is guarded by white giants and other sentries. They won't be easy to get past."
Edited: "We can't be sure of anything Stella. High magic objects only work when they are putting the universe back into balance."

On to 3x04, where the girls decide to try a spell on the gryphons attacking them:

Unedited: Flora points out they've never tried this spell before.
Edited: Flora says that WizGiz uses this spell to move to his summer cottage, not to move giant birds.

At the lake, Brandon tells Stella that he can see what she looks like now...

Unedited: He tells her that Flora's spell never worked.
Edited: Flora's spell wore off on the ship.

Back at school...

Unedited: There's a brief scene of Chatta talking with a random student.
Edited: This scene has been (understandably) edited out.

Unedited: Musa introduces herself to Galatea normally.
Edited: Musa makes beatbox noises while introducing herself to Galatea.

And a minor edit for the Nick dub, after Stella hears about Cassandra taking care of royal business on Solaria...

Unedited: "And my father just lets her? Cassandra must have bewitched him! If my mother hadn't given up the crown after the divorce, none of this would be happening right now!"
Edited by Nick: Stella no longer brings up her mom. "And my dad just rolled over and drooled? I don't think so. This can not be true. Cassandra must have cursed him. That is the only explanation for all of this."

Posted by: SpiderBraids Jan 25 2013, 3:52 PM

Moving on to 3x05...

Unedited: We open with the situation on Andros, and Bloom and Layla talking about the invasion of Andros in the Alfea garden.
Edited: We skip those scenes and head straight to the girls' dorm.

The pixies get turned into the Winx.

Unedited: "Bloom" speaks with her normal voice.
Edited: She speaks with a pixie-like high-pitched voice.

(In the next episode, the Winx speak in the pixies' voices in both versions.)

4Kids tries to justify the appearance of a flashback to the destruction of Domino...

Unedited: Bloom tells Layla "We won't stand by either. We're gonna use all our power to help." This leads into the flashback.
Edited: Bloom tells Layla that every time they mention Baltor, she keeps getting flashbacks to the destruction of Sparks.

Immediately following the above, Icy is using a flame she is holding to light up a few cups in their hideout.

Unedited:
Icy: "They're here to save Andros."
Darcy: "Acting all tough and courageous."
Stormy: "Valtor is right. They're SO naive."
Icy: "They think they can interfere with Valtor's plans. I don't know whether to call them arrogant or stupid. It won't be long before they see that their spells are useless."

Edited:
Icy: "This new power Baltor gave me is cool!"
Darcy: "Baltor gave you a new power?"
Stormy: "We know she's his favorite but don't worry. She'll mess it up like she always does!"
Icy: "Spoken like a real witch. But true, although perhaps Baltor will be different. Nah, eventually he'll disappoint me. But in the meantime it could be fun. "

A good deal of criticism against this episode was levied against the whole thing about Icy getting a fire power and not using it against the Winx. That wasn't the only issue viewers had with the battle, though...

Unedited: After Icy gets shot out of the sky, the girls decide to play a trick on Darcy and Stormy. Musa goes in to attack Stormy. Darcy attacks Musa and Musa counters. We see Icy make her icepad. Layla sneaks up on them and shackles them together.
Edited: Icy gets shot out of the Sky, and Bloom says: "Whenever you face us, you lose" as 4K cuts straight to Icy making her icepad, then Layla sneaking up on Darcy and Stormy.

The issue here: Certain viewers thought Darcy should have been able to sense Layla sneaking up on her (like she did Bloom back in the second episode). The original version would not have had these issues.

Although Nick's version doesn't cut out the scene (or any other scene, in fact), there are still some differences in the dialog. Bloom: "When you mess with the Winx, you get burned!" icon_biggrin.gif

Posted by: SpiderBraids Feb 17 2013, 2:21 AM

Back from a longer-than expected hiatus, we now move on to 3x06. When Tressa frees her mom from imprisonment, there's much more dialog than there originally was:

Unedited:
Mom: My dear Tressa, I was afraid I'd never see you again.
Tressa: Well, you can thank the fairies and Princess Layla. They risked their lives to come down here. They helped me. And all I've done in return is act like a coward.
Mom: (backs off)
Tressa: (hacks bars off)
Mom: That's my girl. (comes out to hug Tressa)
Tressa: (gives mom crown) This is yours mother. Now go. Get away from here.
Mom: (puts on crown)

Edited:
Mom: You came to rescue me honey. I'm so proud of you.
Tressa: Don't be. It's Layla and the fairies that you should be proud of. Me? I don't know how to be brave mom. But Bloom said that I should just go for it, that I should just try.
Mom: I think Bloom is right dear. (backs off) Start now. Be brave.
Tressa: (hacks bars off)
Mom: Well done Tressa. That's my girl. Thank you. (comes out to hug Tressa) I'm proud of you.
Tressa: (over a shot of Mom) Happy to be of service mom. (gives Mom crown) With you back in the throne, maybe we can defeat Baltor. (as Mom puts on crown) And this time I'll be at your side.

Meanwhile in the Alfea dorm, 4Kids has changed the text on the slip of paper on the floor from 1+1 to something more complex. (http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a77/Rover_Wow/wccuts/3x05-OnPaper.jpg)

The Winx blast the cave roof while being chased by a Kraken. We get a Nick alteration:

Original and 4Kids: Flo: "Uh, Tecna, the cave collapsing, was that part of your plan?" Tec: "Well no, but I never said my plan was perfect."

Nick: Flo: "I like living dangerously, but this is pushing it!" Tec: "Well, let's keep pushing it! We're almost out!"

On to 3x07, and Stella's Enchantix one-liner:

Unedited: "Enchantix. That sounds cool!"
Edited:"Plus, the wings are FABULOUS! icon_smile.gif"
I dunno. Stella's 4K one liner sounds better.

On Eraklyon, Diaspro has ordered her help out of the room and has been left to herself.

Unedited: "Sky thinks that Bloom is prettier than me? How ridiculous."
Edited: "I wish there was a way to get rid of that stupid fairy Bloom!"

4Kids uses a different background after Stella talks about Bloom going to Sky's party. (http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a77/Rover_Wow/wccuts/3x07Altering.png)

The girls' princess lessons have put them behind schedule in clearing up the library.

Unedited: Stella has an idea. Tec: "Don't you think the last one was enough?" She suggests they should change the pixies into copies of themselves (which is how they got into this mess in the first place). Bloom: "You already did so much for me Stella. Right now we should all just work super hard. We are behind but if we do our best, I think we can finish in time without using tricks or magic. All we have to do is believe we can do it."
Edited: 4Kids snips out Stella explaining her idea, and most of Bloom's line. Stella: "I have another fabulous idea." Tec: "Perhaps we should just simply clean up the books?" Bloom: "Yeah, no more tricks. Let's just get to work." (Corresponding with "All we have to do is believe we can do it.")

Moving on to 3x08. At the beginning of the episode...
Unedited: Bloom has a nightmare in which the others show up to taunt her for not having anyone left from her home planet to save and thus earn her Enchantix. Layla shows up at the end.
Edited: Quite a bit of the nightmare is cut out, including the part Layla shows up. (This left a few viewers scratching their heads at her absence.)

When Sky's parents show up at the party:
Unedited: They're identified as King Erendor and Queen Samara.
Edited: We do NOT get their names, as they're only identified as the King and Queen of Eraklyon.
Since the random royal couple that appears before them are identified by name, this change seems puzzling.

Sky decides to shoot magic arrows at the Winx.
Unedited: Layla makes an awesome scream before transforming, and puts up a Enchanted Morphix wall.
Edited: Layla's awesome scream gets cut out, and her spell is now called a Rubber and Glue spell.

Stella gets her Enchantix.
Unedited: We have Bloom and Layla making comments on Stella getting her Enchantix.
Edited: We only get Bloom's comment.

At the end...
Unedited: Stella: "We both left something behind didn't we?"
Edited: Stella: "My father wanted to go back to Solaria and pretend to still be under Cassandra's spell. He thinks that's the best way to defeat her." (Stella is only actually shown speaking that last part, that's why the 4K line is much longer)
Similar to the Sphere of Truth, this edit will affect a later plot point.

3x09. While Bloom is in Gardenia, we have a musical montage.
Unedited: At one point, she looks in disgust at a couple kissing on the streets. (http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a77/Rover_Wow/wccuts/3x09-PassionIT.jpg)
Edited: She looks in disgust at graffiti saying Love Conquers All. (http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a77/Rover_Wow/wccuts/3x09-LoveConquersAllUS.jpg)

Bloom's earth parents talk to her.

Unedited:
Vanessa: "But knowing why he did it might help you feel better. If he's the same Sky who saved you from Darkar's magic, then something very serious must have happened to explain why he changed so much. You never know honey. It might just be that HE'S the one that needs your help. In any case you have the right to know. Demand some answers. Never give up, Bloom, especially when your feelings are at stake. Sky should explain his actions. In fact, insist that he does."
Mike: "Well, I can't tell whether this Sky guy is a prince or a jerk, but I have half a mind to teach him a lesson for treating you like that!"

Edited:
Vanessa: "I don't know much about spells honey, but isn't it true that a person doesn't know what they're doing when they're under one? Isn't that what happened when Lord Darkar put you under a spell and Sky saved you? It may be time to put pride aside, and help your friend."
Mike: "Normally guys who act like that need to get the heave-ho. But in this case I think you and Sky have true love, and that's worth fighting for."

The Winx girls make their escape after breaking the spell on Sky.

Unedited: Diaspro says: "This isn't over! Sky will be mine!"
Edited: Diaspro does NOT say this.

Posted by: P-girl Feb 28 2013, 7:12 PM

Ooooh, I forgot that one. The 'We both left something behind' is a very powerful moment. And 4Kids messed it up.

Posted by: mightymarty2 Feb 28 2013, 7:20 PM

I have to agree that is a much better line than 4kids

Posted by: SpiderBraids Mar 25 2013, 2:59 PM

Moving on to 3x10... After the Winx girls transform:

Unedited: We get a shot of Mirta participating in the battle, followed by a shot of Stella and Layla, then Bloom putting up a shield.
Edited: We get Bloom's shield first, then the Stella and Layla shot, then Mirta fighting.

During the fighting:

Unedited: After Stella and Layla's attack knocks out a bunch of student witches, Stella and Layla notice the fighting in the forest:
S: "Layla, look. It must be Ms. Faragonda fighting in the forest."
(Layla flies off)
S: "Layla!"
L: "What?"
S: "Where are you going?"
L: "We have to do something. We can't let her face Valtor alone."
S: "We're need here. Ms. Faragonda is more than able to take care of herself!"
(Explosion from the forest)
Edited: It cuts from the result of Stella and Layla's attack to the explosion from the forest.

The Trix have Princess Galatea lead them up a staircase to Alfea's secret goodies.

Unedited: Darcy: "All the ancient secrets of Alfea will soon be ours, unless our little princess is leading us the wrong way. That'd be a royal mistake."
Edited: Darcy: "Remember freshman, you lead us to the wrong place, we'll freeze your fairy wings and pluck them right off!"

Notable because guess what happens to Galatea's wings later?

The girls search for Galatea...

Unedited: Bloom says she senses something strange before Musa senses it as well.
Edited: 4Kids cuts Bloom's sensing, and starts Musa's line about her sensing it a bit sooner.

Unedited: Musa picks up Galatea's message, and we have a shot of Musa missing her earphones.
Edited: That shot has been cut out, presumably to cover up the mistake.

After Musa gets her Enchantix, we have the first time the fairy dust has been edited out, as she puts out the library fire. Also...

Unedited: We have a short scene of Musa talking with Stella and Layla about joining the Enchantix club (even getting in a comment about her wings icon_smile.gif). Barbatea praises them about saving the library and Griz adds: "I too would like to thank you. Without your help, the Trix would have taken possesion of all our spells. Don't let it go to your heads, but I'm proud of you." Bloom: "We didn't do anything more than the other fairies. If we won today, it's because we all worked together."
Edited: Musa's bit is cut, so it goes straight from the portal above Alfea closing to Barbatea thanking the Winx. Also, Barbatea and Griz start talking about FG going missing sooner than in the unedited. Griz: "All of Alfea did very well today, but unfortunately we cannot celebrate, because our headmistress is still missing!" Bloom: "Last we saw Miss Faragonda, she and Valtor went off in that bubble, and were fighting in the woods."

Posted by: mightymarty2 Mar 26 2013, 9:26 AM

I think I prefer the uneditted version as the lines seem more fitting. Though I do think the Trix threatening and scaring Galatea, is more the Trix's style.

Posted by: SpiderBraids Apr 23 2013, 3:37 PM

Moving on to 3x11. Again, 4K edits out an animation mistake:

Unedited: After Musa and Layla strike the monsters in the CT hallway, it cuts to a shot of the Winx girls laughing. Problem is, it shows Flora in her Enchantix outfit. http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a77/Rover_Wow/screens/3x11/3x11-FloCasWrongD.jpg
Edited: It cuts from Musa/Layla's strike straight to Baltor looking at his crystal ball.

Darcy comments on Mirta:

Unedited: "She used to study here at Cloud Tower, before moving to Alfea. Weakling!"
Edited: "She claims to be a fairy who just happened to be born in a witch's body." (Baltor follows it up with "She looks like a weakling.")

The girls find Griffin in her cell:

Unedited: When Bloom tells Grif about FG's fight with Valtor, Grif replies: "I'm glad to hear that another member of the Company of Light is still standing." Bloom: "Ms. Griffin, so it's true, you were a member of the Company of Light."
Edited: 4Kids cuts out Grif confirming she was a member of the Company of Light, so it goes straight to Grif recommending them to seek out the vault monsters.

Posted by: Abby Apr 25 2013, 4:22 AM

Surprisingly, I did like some of the edits in that last one. Mainly the whole stella and divorced parents plot. The edited version seems more realistic and Aisha/Layla is not as whiney in it.

Currently working on the comparison for 3x12, but to tide you over, Una di Noi has posted a http://www.unadinoi-winx.com/guest-post-winx-club-the-real-story-by-sailorwinx/ of a high schooler's presentation on 4Kids' edits to the show. There's also a http://www.unadinoi-winx.com/the-americanization-of-winx asking readers if they think Rai dub of Winx would have done well in the US.

Posted by: SpiderBraids Jun 4 2013, 7:42 AM

Okay, now moving on to 3x12. After we have a name change for Flora's sister from Miele (Honey) to Rose, the girls meet the Sage of Linphea at the waterfall, who tells them about the Black Willow. The most important change involves about getting the water from the stream:

Unedited: They're specifically told to use a goblet to get the water from the stream.
Edited: They're told in more uncertain terms that they must get the water without touching it.

Darcy pollutes the stream, and Miele/Rose gets zapped. I imagine there are probably some people out there who prefer Flora's more dramatic line in the unedited as she casts the spell on the Trix...

Unedited: "Venus Gobbler!"
Edited: "That was my sister!"

After Flora rescues her sis, a major ordering change takes place here, and it fixes a plot hole rather than create one:

Unedited: We see a tear drip into the polluted stream, causing the stream to suddenly become clean again, and causing Flora to transform into Enchantix, before emerging from the clean stream. Flora uses her fairy dust to make the willow throw the Trix into the stream.
Edited: We see Flora transform into Enchantix and emerge from the still-polluted stream. We see Flora use her fairy dust (just the "drawing" part, without the actual drawing), and 4K puts in the clips that originally immediately precede and follow Flora's transformation to present it as if Flora's dust has purified the stream, before making the willow throw the Trix.

I think this one 4kids is a lot better, which is unusual as its normally very close

Posted by: Abby Jun 5 2013, 8:47 PM

I agree with marty, it makes more sense for her fairy dust to fix the river than to just throw the trix in.

Posted by: SpiderBraids Jul 13 2013, 3:49 PM

3x13. Saladin comes in to inform FG about the trouble on Andros:

Unedited: FG's dialog is normal: "Headmaster Saladin, what could be so important that you simply had to pay me a visit in the middle of the night?"
Edited: 4Kids adds more dialog over Saladin walking in, and does something similar to the FG and Griffin scene in 1x17: "Prof. Saladin. It's very sweet how you keep coming in to check up on me. (Unedited dialog starts here) I must say it reminds me of the days when you were a senior hero at Red Fountain and I was a freshman at Alfea."

The girls arrive on Andros.

Unedited: We see all the girls coming through the portal one-by-one. Layla's dad is not very supportive of her coming here...
Dad: Layla, don't be stubborn. Go back to Alfea, please! I can't risk losing you.
Layla: I'll go back dad, right after all of us fighting side-by-side close the Omega portal and set our planet free.
Edited: 4Kids cuts out after Musa comes through the portal, so we don't see Bloom and Flora. Layla's dad is slightly more supportive...
Dad: I'd rather that you went back to Alfea, but as Princess of Tides, it is your choice.
Layla: Then my decision is to stay in my realm, and do everything in my power to try to save it.
Dad (over a wide shot): Then we will try together.

There are four scenes where the girls use their fairy dust, and all of them have had the dust sequence edited out. One of these is Flora's outline-less dust drawing that 4K used in the previous episode, but not here. (http://s9.photobucket.com/user/Rover_Wow/media/wccuts/3x12-outline.jpg.html) Also, 4Kids cuts out a brief exchange after Flora saves Stella: Flo: "Stella, are you alright?" Stella: "Flora... how's it going?"

Tebok explains how the Omega portal was made.

Unedited: We're shown the making of the portal, including a scene of three sorcerors casting spells on it.
Edited: The part showing the column of rock forming is slightly faster than in the unedited, and the part with the three sorcerors has been edited out.

Tebok, on Tecna trying to close the portal:

Unedited: "You are needed here Layla, to help rebuild. What Tecna is doing takes great courage. We must allow her to live out her destiny."
Edited: "If she has chosen to go forward, you must let her do it. Perhaps she will be the one to close the gate. Perhaps this act of sacrifice is her destiny."

Posted by: mightymarty2 Jul 14 2013, 8:47 AM

I think with this its a shame 4kids didn't show the sorcerors creating the portal

Posted by: Abby Jul 16 2013, 8:05 PM

I liked the first edit that added a hint of backstory to the teachers, but the rest of the edits seem like annoying cuts to me. I would have loved to see the dust sequences.

Posted by: SpiderBraids Aug 11 2013, 10:37 AM

On to 3x14, and most of the edits for time involve the transformations and fairy dust. Interestingly, though, 4K actually does show the fairy dust briefly when the Winx use it to defrost Bloom. So anyways, here are some dialog edits:

FG does not want the girls to try to avenge Tecna:
Unedited: "No, but I can't risk losing all of you either. You will stay on campus until further notice. Tomorrow we'll hatch a plan."
Edited: "No, but I cannot risk losing all of you too. You're to stay on campus until further notice. Good night girls."

Just before Valtor arrives on Oppositus, a weather report for Oppositus is heard in the 4K dub. The dub also changes his dialog to include an observation on the palace guards:
Unedited: "Oh I don't want to enter the palace..." "Then come on in!"
Edited: "Alert and lazy, all at once." "You got that right!" "Very amusing."

After Stormy attacks Stella and Layla:
Unedited: Stormy: "I dreamt I was eating loads of jello and being disgustingly nice to people. I was so ashamed of myself." Darcy: "Yeah, you were acting like a dweeb Stormy, but that's because Valtor spelled you."
Edited: Stormy: "That was weird, I was just standing there just thinking about kittens, and humming this Peter Paul and Magic song in my head." Darcy: "You were dweebing out because Baltor put an Oppositus spell on you."

Posted by: mightymarty2 Aug 12 2013, 7:43 AM

I think they are all 50:50 except the first one which I prefer the unedited version

Posted by: SpiderBraids Sep 14 2013, 2:47 PM

3x15, and unlike the last episode, there are no transformations or fairy dust for 4K to make their time edits on. So...

Unedited: We open on a night scene of the girls in their dorm talking about Bloom going to Pyros.
Edited: 4Kids skips the dorm scene and just opens with Bloom's arrival on Pyros.

A visual change has been made during the bit where Bloom learns to roar like a dragon:

Unedited: The background behind Bloom is a couple of tall trees and a rock face, while behind Buddy (the dragon) is plain ground.
Edited: 4K shorten the trees and show the sky, and there's a little bit of water animation behind Buddy (presumably to match the water animation in the other shots). http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a77/Rover_Wow/wccuts/3x15-BGChange.jpg

There have also been some effects added to Valtor learning to teleport after returning from his trip.

Near the end, we get a montage of T/T moments.

Unedited: These are played out silently over a song.
Edited: Only a few bits of the montage are shown, and dialog is dubbed over them, and different dialog from before, at that. (For example, over a clip of T/T at the Resort Realm... Timmy: "You're awesome" Tec: "So are you" [laughs])

These edits don't really seem to make any difference to the story for once

Posted by: SpiderBraids Dec 14 2013, 6:15 AM

After a really long hiatus, here's episode 16:

The other girls have just found from the Specialists that Tecna is alive on the Omega Dimension and decide to head off on a mission.
Unedited:
(In FG's office)
Griz (knocking on door): The girls are just about to leave.
FG: Well, thank you for keeping me posted Griselda.
(At the quad, the girls and Specialists [are supposed to] board the ship and take off)
FG: You know, even though the dangers are great, I don't feel it's right to try to stop them.
Griz: I know. It's their destiny to go and save their friend.
FG: And I believe they will succeed.
Edited: This whole sequence is edited out (including the FG/Griz convo), presumably to remove the whole animation error of the ship not being in the shot where they're supposed to be boarding it. (http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a77/Rover_Wow/screens/3x16/3x16-Brandon.jpg)

The girls arrive on Omega, and even at this late stage, 4K!Stella seems slightly more fashion-minded than her original counterpart:
Unedited: Flora comments on the bitter cold and, Brandon comments on one of the frozen prisoners: "I guess that's what you get if you're a prisoner in the Omega Dimension: locked away in a block of ice for eternity."
Edited: She rants that this trip is "such a missed outfit opportunity": she had a fur coat with matching earmuffs that would have been perfect for the trip. She (rather than Brandon) then says of one of the frozen prisoners: "Somebody put a shirt on that guy. If you're gonna freeze some dude for eternity, at least try to make him look good..."

Over on Pyros, Bloom and Maya have a talk during their training session.

Unedited:
Maya: Very well done. Your skills have improved so much in such a short time. Your magic is more focused and you're able to control your fear. Your powers have reached a whole new level of sophistication.
Bloom: Am I that much better?
Maya: You may not feel it, but I can see it. You're almost ready to go back to Magix my dear.
Bloom (over clips of her friends): Oh, Magix. I cannot wait to see my friends again. I miss them so much. I really want to go home, but I know I still have so much to learn here.
Edited:
Maya: That's what happens when you let go of fear. You see, fear can paralyze you, but when you stop being afraid, you can do anything you set your mind and heart to.
Bloom: So you think I'm almost there?
Maya: It doesn't matter what I think. It only matters what you believe can happen to you.
(Scene ends here)

Bloom encounters the Trix on Pyros:
Unedited: "Sorry, no tourists allowed on Pyros."
Edited: "You're so getting voted off this island..."

Other than the obligatory cuts, there have been minor visual alterations to Bloom's Enchantix transformation (http://s9.photobucket.com/user/Rover_Wow/media/wccuts/3x16-BloomGlow.png.html), and coming out of the transformation, we have some rearrangement and visual arrangement:
Unedited: Bloom glowing --> Bloom deflecting the Trix attack --> Bloom blinking --> Icy's reaction --> Bloom glowing and firing off her attack
Edited: Bloom blinking --> Bloom deflecting the Trix attack --> Icy's reaction --> Bloom glowing --> Bloom firing off her attack (http://s9.photobucket.com/user/Rover_Wow/media/wccuts/3x16-BloomEnchTranDiff.png.html)

Posted by: mightymarty2 Dec 14 2013, 8:42 AM

I do prefer the Rai version apart from Maya's bit which 4kids did better

Posted by: SpiderBraids Mar 12 2014, 4:12 PM

After a really long hiatus (work and other commitments come first), we finally move on to 3x17...

Bloom comes back to Alfea and after finding her dorm deserted, heads to FG and Griz's room:

Unedited:
Bloom: "Well, I, I'm just back from Pyros, and I find the whole school deserted. What's going on?" Griz tells Bloom: "Well it is early. All the students are still sound asleep" (showing Bloom a clock) Bloom: "Not all. Anyway I just wanted to thank you for your advice. Everything on Pyros was" FG: "I know. I heard all about it. Maya, the chief elder of the island of dragons is an old friend of mine. She kept me well informed of the progress you were making."
Edited:
Bloom: "I just got back from Pyros, and Digit said that everyone went to Omega to look for Tecna?" 4K cuts out Griz showing Bloom the clock and the rest of Bloom's initial comment, picking up on FG saying: "We'll talk about that in a minute. First, let me congratulate you on what you achieved on Pyros. Maya is a friend and kept me informed of your progress." 4K also cuts out a flashback to the Timmy scenes from 3x16 while Bloom is asking about going to look for Tecna.

While Sky and Bloom are talking, we have a bit of a role reversal:

Unedited:
Sky: "I know but, I did hurt you, and I'm so sorry."
Bloom: "Mmm..."
As we pan to the right to put Sky off the screen: "It was all Diaspro's doing I guess..."
Edited:
Sky: "I know, but I hurt you Bloom, and that's the last thing I would ever want to do. It was under Diaspro's control."
Underline is where Sky was originally not talking, and 4K has apparently looped the animation of Sky talking over the original.

We cut to the Omega dimension where the Specialists have been captured.

Unedited: There is a prison guard standing near the Specialists.
Edited: 4K has erased the guard. http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a77/Rover_Wow/wccuts/3x17-MissingPrisonGuard.png

Bloom and Sky find Tecna, and they talk. Here's an example of a minor edit:

Unedited:
Tecna: "I even managed to turn this ice into nutritious food" Bloom: "Probably better than the food in Alfea's cafeteria icon_biggrin.gif" Tecna: "The planet is full of technowaste, so I made a weapon and a transmitter." Sky: "And that's how you were able to make contact with Timmy's space probe. Good job Tecna!"
Edited:
Tecna: "I figured out how to turn ice into food that's better than Alfea's cafeteria icon_smile.gif" Bloom: "Good one icon_smile.gif Remind me to tell that to the rest of the girls icon_biggrin.gif" 4K cuts out Tecna talking about making a weapon and transmitter, so instead Sky says: "This is one of the harshest realms there is, and you managed to survive without any trouble at all."

Tecna transforms to her Enchantix to take on a convict, and we have a minor cut:
Unedited: We see her popping out of a large purple flower, which quickly disappears. I suspect it's a reference to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0wdsH2Dm_aA (Royal Patraine transformation from Doremi)
Edited: After spending more time showing the Enchantix transformation (it happens again later in the ep), we do not see the flower.

Tecna gets captured by another convict:
Unedited: We see the prisoner brandish what seems to be a rather small knife.
Edited: The prisoner's knife has a larger and glowing blade in the 4K edition.
http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a77/Rover_Wow/wccuts/3x17-BrightSword.png

We have two instances of 4K removing the fairy dust bottle opening animation: Musa healing Bloom, then the girls giving the ice snake a dusting. In the former case, 4K!Bloom explicitly says that she can't transform earlier in the ep, and when she transforms after Musa's healing, she says "Musa's fairy dust must have fixed whatever was keeping me from transforming" icon_confused.gif

Rearrangement plus cut as Bloom and Sky leave Omega with the others:
Unedited: We see the ice snake chasing some prisoners, before cutting to Bloom telling Sky "Alright, let's get out of here." We see a panning shot of the two RF transports showing Bloom kneeling to the ground, before showing her putting a little bit of the ice from Omega into her fairy dust bottle ("I'm going to take some of this place with me"), then boarding the transport. This is then followed by a scene where Bloom explains: "Every world has its balance, and so in the Omega Dimension it is the white snake who maintains the order." Stella: "You know, I have no idea what Magix's balance is, and frankly I don't really care. I just can't wait to get back there."
Edited: We see the ice snake chasing some prisoners, before cutting to the a panning shot of the RF transports. Before the bit where Bloom kneels, the shot cuts to her telling Sky "What do you say we head for home?" before boarding the transport. The scene immediately then cuts to Alfea.

Back at the dorm in Alfea, Bloom and Flora talk:
Unedited: Bloom: "I'd like to spend some time with Sky. We could go to Sudi Lake together" Flora: "Oh, I can already hear the soundtrack (hums "Here Comes the Bride"). Bloom: "Flora, stop it. (lightly smothers Flora with a pillow) And what about Helia?" Flora: "Well..." (Cut to outside so we don't hear her answer)
Edited:
Bloom: "Sky invited me to visit his parents' lake house in Eraklyon" Flora: "The summer lake house? Isn't that what couples do right before they get engaged?" Bloom: "That's ridiculous! (smothers Flora) It is! Unless, do you really think??" Flora: "I do... (Cut to outside here, but we still hear Flora) Well, 'I do' is actually what you might be saying..."

Posted by: mightymarty2 Mar 13 2014, 10:00 AM

I prefer the uneddited version. It has better dialog when talking about the food and also I don't see the point of removing the guard

Posted by: Abby Apr 13 2014, 11:43 PM

Half of these changes just seem so unnecessary. I don't see the point in changing Sky's apology.

Posted by: SpiderBraids May 10 2014, 2:15 PM

Finally found time to do the comparison for 3x18... The biggest 4K edit in the episode is not very substantial:

Unedited: We see Flora's exam, then Musa's, then Tecna's.
Edited: We go straight from Flora's to Tecna's exam.

The most notable thing about this episode is that the Rai version has an edit compared to the Italian dub... Comparing the Rai version and the Italian version, it appears that the Rai version has cut out a second or so of the Negatus creature flying off towards Flora during the exam, as well as of Bloom falling from the sky after turning back into her casuals, then slowed down the remaining footage of each shot to match the air time blink.gif The 4K version does retain the Italian footage.

Layla's guy issues and Musa's reaction:
Unedited:
Layla: I'm banning men altogether: No father, no boyfriends, no guys at all.
Musa: Whoa, that's extreme Layla icon_confused.gif
Edited:
Layla: Hey, don't worry, there's no way that I'm marrying anyone, much less someone that they choose.
Musa: Way to be strong Layla :)

During the Valtor-Bloom chase:
Unedited: We get a flashback to FG telling Bloom that her Enchantix power is incomplete.
Edited: This flashback is cut out, so Bloom's concern looks a bit out of place.

Ophir has been captured:
Unedited:
Flora: "Bloom, what do we do?"
Bloom: "Layla's Morphix power is holding the box and the Trix. It's her call."
Tecna: "Layla, think about it, if he's working for Valtor, it's playing right into his hands."
Flora: (over shot of Ophir being captured) "But if he's not, then we have to do everything we can to save him."
Edited:
Flora: "I think you should do what he says, Layla." (Bloom's line gets snipped)
Tecna: "If that Ophir guy is working for Baltor, this could be just another trick." (Flora is silent afterwards. Huh, 4K deciding to silence a bit of dialog blink.gif )

End of episode:
Unedited: Layla hates Ophir for sneaking off, and Bloom can only think about FG saying "I fear your powers will fail you when you need them most".
Edited: Layla is sure Ophir is working for Baltor just because he sneaks off, and Musa says "Let's go home and get ready for whatever Baltor will do next" over the shot of Bloom.

Its a shame they cut out Musa

I prefer the original as it more in tune with how she is feeling, rather than building up the disappointment of her getting with Nabu/Ophir. Going from strong independant to more like the others

The uneddited explains things better here and fits in. I am not sure if Faragonda had said this before, I forget but if she hasn't it does need to be said, as it explains why Bloom does not miniturise

Oh how I would like to join the two together as I would remove Flora's first line in the original and add the eddited first line of Flora's instead.

Its 50:50 for me the last edit

1) Considering you don't really get to see the full extent of Musa's test, I don't see much reason to keep it...
2) FG did say it, in the first scene immediately after the exam sequence.

On to 3x19:

Unedited: We first see the girls learning rhythmic dancing at Alfea. They're still in their dancing outfits while they're watching the news.
Edited: 4K cuts out the dancing scene, so the dancing outfits are completely without context.

Unedited: The girls are watching a news report about Cassandra and Radius' upcoming wedding. Stella rants about how she's apparently considered an undesirable person, and that Cassandra's hair is an abomination icon_biggrin.gif Bloom reassures her that they (the Winx) will help her, and "put proper hair back in the palace of Solaria" icon_biggrin.gif
Edited: Stella rants about how Cassandra has spelled Radius again. The scene cuts off after Bloom asks: "What's the plan?", omitting the footage that goes with the "proper hair" quip.

The girls talk to Nova about the party:

Unedited:
N: There will be dancers performing in the royal couple's honor. What are they thinking about?
S: About sneaking in to the party of course, and stopping my father, our king, from marrying Countess Cassandra.
Edited:
N: There'll be fire jugglers, dancers, and a famous flying biker act.
S: Hold up, flying bikers at a wedding? Now I know Cassandra re-spelled my dad.

A review I read of the ep thought that Nova was ticked off after the above excerpt and Stella must have said something different, but in the Rai version, Nova is actually being pensive, not ticked off. (This same review also knew about the dancing scene being cut, and the reviewer was thankful it had been cut, calling it a useless scene... icon_confused.gif)

Layla suggests sneaking in as the dancers, and Stella turns it down:

Unedited:
Stella: Out of the question. Except for you and me, nobody else can dance to save their soul. They'd know right away we were impostors...
Layla: Yeahh...
Edited:
Stella: No offense to Tecna, but her left foot doesn't know where her right foot is half the time.
(Layla's "Yeah..." is cut and used as a reaction to Nova suggesting they can get biking lessons from the Specialists)

Since Rai did show the dancing scene, we know that Stella is full of herself (it's Stella who gets herself tangled up in ribbons), but since 4K cut it out, Stella could be right for all we know icon_confused.gif

Unedited: We cut straight from Nova's suggestion to a close-up of Stella at the start of the next scene.
Edited: Nova's suggestion is followed by Layla's "Yeah", as above, and then a shot of a RF transport landing, before cutting to the Stella close-up.

Unedited: Stella shows the boys the flying bikers' uniform and adds: "You know, squeezing into that outfit, that could be the most painful part of this mission icon_smile.gif"
Edited: Stella showing the uniform is cut, and we only get Stella saying: "Fine, I'm in, but only if you guys promise to find us some really bad uniforms icon_smile.gif"

Bike training has rearrangement:
Unedited: We get the boys driving first, then a talking scene in the middle, then the girls taking their turn.
Edited: We get the boys driving, then the girls driving, then the talking scene.

Later that night:
Unedited: We see Layla and Musa talking in their dorm (with Musa asking Layla "How can you stay with someone who doesn't fully trust you?"), before cutting to the Specialists' conversation, then back to Layla and Musa again:
Spoiler!

Layla: It's just that we're different, like, it's absolutely impossible to have a talk like this with a boy, you know? They always end up making some stupid joke... They're all like, "Big babies, isn't she cute?"
Musa: Not as cute as Ophir though.
Layla: And why are we talking about Ophir?
Musa: Ah-hah...
Layla: No comment, and anyway you already know I'm already promised to someone I don't care about. Time to rest, tomorrow's gonna be a very big day.

I suspect this is meant to add a little dramatic irony considering what happens later...
Edited: The 2nd half of the convo between Musa and Layla is removed, and in the remaining 1st half, Musa is made out to be very reluctant to follow through on breaking up with Riven. After the Specialists' conversation, it immediately shows Chimera waking up the next morning.

The girls get their uniforms:
Unedited: We're shown everyone getting their uniforms in gift boxes.
Edited: 4Kids cuts out Bloom reacting to Sky's gift box, and then Stella taking the box from Brandon, presumably to cut out a bit of rather iffy animation when (in the original) she randomly guesses her gift is a diamond icon_biggrin.gif Her comment is instead: "I didn't think you boys had it in you to do paper and bows", and it goes over the shots of Musa, Tecna and Flora getting their uniforms.

Stella confronts Chimera at the wedding:
Unedited: Stella: "I see you're all ready to take my place Chimera. But I'm afraid you and your scepter will never be up to the task!" She transforms, and Cassandra sees this and decides to send the guards after the girls, so the others transform as well.
Edited: Stella: "Well, at least I'm a real princess, Chimera!" (cuts off before the 2nd part of the above) Cassandra sends the guards after the girls and the girls transform together.

Fairy dust is edited as usual, but we get to see Stella draw her star this time.

For the first 2 parts it clearly makes more sence the uneddited version and the fact that Radius is spelled is implied given what he knows from when Stella gained her enchantix. Nova is pensive conidering what Stella is surgesting is danagerous and her informing the winx on what was going in would land her in hot water.

Until we get to Musa talking where the uneddited is better. Its all very much 50:50

Again very much 50:50 towards the end

Back after yet another long hiatus... It should be noted that the main issue behind the change in Stella's rant in the news scene is that it was necessitated by the earlier change in 3x08 about Radius pretending to still be under her spell icon_confused.gif Bloom does think that it's part of his plan, but Stella insists that she spelled him again icon_confused.gif

Moving on to 3x20... Musa and Tecna say goodbye to their pixies before heading off on a mission. Musa's bit has a one-second cut, but it's quite the nuance they cut out:

Original:
Tune hums some music while dusting Musa's room.
While getting her headphones, Musa knocks over a container with dust in it.
Tune: Musa, please, be more careful!
Musa: Don't worry, I'll clean it up later.

4Kids:
Tune is dusting Musa's room: So Musa, what mission are we going on today?
Musa gets her 'phones: We're not going, I am.
4Kids cuts out the container being knocked over, yet shows the rest of the shot of Musa getting her 'phones leading up to it.
Tune: That's not fair, how come I can't go too?
Musa: Fairies only. Maybe next time Tune, see ya!

Livy tells the bonded pixies about the planned raid on the pixie village. Digit decides they got themselves a mission, and bring along the pixie pets.

Original: Digit: "Little creatures of the forest, let's go ask the headmistress to raise the magical barrier." Problem is, the headmistress is with the other girls, outside the barrier, on their mission... The writers must have realized their error, as the next we see of Digit and friends, Digit reminds Lockette that "You found a passage that got us through Faragonda's barrier, but maybe this is too tough for you. I sounded like a fairy now didn't I? icon_wink.gif"
4Kids: Digit: "C'mon little creatures of the forest, let's go defend our village!" The aforementioned "save" is edited out of the relevant scene.
Nick: Digit does address the issue properly: "First things first: we need to find a way to get on the other side of this shield."

No significant cuts happen until after Zing and Glim get captured by Darcy. The next scene, of the pixies getting lost in spite of Lockette, loses quite a bit of footage...

Original: So the pixies get lost, and Digit reminds Lockette about finding the passageway as above. Digit decides to have the whole entourage take 5 to "relax (their) circuits a little bit" icon_smile.gif
Chatta: "The right path to where? That's not the right way to Pixie Village.
Digit: "First, we have to find Buzzy and Glim because they could be in serious danger!"
Amore: "Hey, listen up! I was just checking my magic sphere for directions, and I saw the Trix; they captured Buzzy and Glim!"
Digit: "We've got to rescue them! Come on everybody!"
(entourage heads off, with a seahorse pet riding Kiko)
Tune: "Hey, where did Livy go?" (heads off)

4Kids: The parts where BuzzyZing and Glim's capture is addressed are completely removed.
Digit: "Okay, just relax and get your bearings."
Chatta: "Just follow your instincts and I know you'll get us there. I know it."
Instead of Digit and Amore's lines, 4K repeats the earlier shot of Lockette: "Okay, we'll go toward the hollow tree, yeah."
(entourage heads off, with seahorse pet riding Kiko; Tune's bit gets removed)

Nick avoids the inconsistent name issue by having Amore mention that she's detected that the Trix are nearby.

The pixies find Darcy with ZingBuzzy and Glim.
Original: After Buzzy flies out of Darcy's hand, there's a whole scene involving Digit telling Amore to use her crystal ball to find where Livy went, the other pixies happening to overhear Darcy, and Livy revealing that she's on a tree, before showing Buzzy summoning her bees to attack Darcy.
4Kids: That whole bit is edited out, so it goes straight from Zing flying out of Darcy's hand to her summoning her bees to attack Darcy.

In the epilogue, FG tells the girls about Digit and pals seeing Valtor.
Original: After Digit points out that they got help from Kiko and the fairy pets, we see a seahorse banging himself against the barrier and FG has to lift it to let him in.
FG then points out that Digit's efforts produced the only useful intel they got today, that Valtor still has that box. FG says: "Digit, you really were a big help today", leading to the obvious "big" joke icon_biggrin.gif
Edited: 4K edits out the bit with seahorse and the barrier, and instead of talking about Digit finding their only useful intel, FG says she's going to give Digit and friends a medal (plus some of the footage of FG talking about the intel has been edited out as well): "Digit, you came through very big today icon_smile.gif"

For the first part I do prefer 4kids as it builds up the bit of tension that helps encourage the pixies to leave latter on.

I think the original is better for the second bit as it expains how they will get out and again this frustration at being left out due to being seen as 'weak'.

Again the original is the better of the two as it allows a bit of personality in with the circuits part.

For the next bit it is 50:50 neither really stands out

I again prefer the original as it is more relevant and giving them a medal is a bit over the top given everything else that happens in the first 3 seasons.

As for the nameing issue it seems fairly standard practice in season 3 given Ophir/Nabu, Baltor/Valtor and not forgeting Layla/Aisha

Ophir/Nabu was an in-story thing, while the others were name changes through dubs. AFAIK, the change from Zing to Buzzy in this ep is arbitrary icon_confused.gif (Similar thing happened to when Layla called Glim "Blinky" in early S2)

3x21, and at the start of the episode, we have a training session:
Original: After Bloom lands on the ground, Bloom gets levitated up into the air, before spotting the anti-sunshine spells.
4Kids: 4K clips about Bloom getting levitated into the air, and we hear Stella yelling "I am so going to take you down Bloom!" as Bloom spots the anti-sunshine spells, so as to imply that Stella cast those spells.

Bloom's explosion is much more audible in the 4K dub than in the original.

Layla is still headstrong about her arranged marriage situation:
Original:
Mom: Layla, the tradition of Andros has always been that parents pick a partner for their children.
L: I know, but I don't care about tradition. Anyway I'm too young to think about marriage, and when the time comes I'll choose my guy.
Mom: Nabu's a wonderful young man Layla...
L: ...and I'm gonna marry him because I love him and... (is interrupted by Tecna arriving with her book) ... Sorry mom, gotta run.

4Kids:
4K switches the dialog around a bit, and makes Layla seem more headstrong about her situation.
L: I don't care about tradition, Mom. I'm too young to be thinking about marriage... Much less an arranged marriage.
Mom: This is not up for debate.
L: You're right mom, it's not. When the time comes I'm gonna pick who I marry.
Mom: Nabu is a wonderful young man...
L: ...and it's gonna be for love and passion and... (is interrupted by Tecna arriving with her book, doesn't say goodbye to her mom like in the original)

For completeness, the Nick version is closer to the original:
Mom: Aisha, I understand, but on Andros we have a tradition: the parents always choose a partner for their children.
A: I know, but I don't care about tradition. What I care about is love, and when the time is right, I wanna be able to make my own choice.
Mom: Nabu's a wonderful young man Aisha...
A: ...and if I marry him, it will be because I love him. (Tecna arrives with her book) ... Sorry mom, gotta run.

The Winx find Ophir on the ship, and Tecna cites the Valtor's box incident from a few episodes ago.
Original: We're actually shown a flashback to the incident (with the original dialog), before Layla says she agrees with Tecna.
4Kids: 4K cuts out the flashback, so it goes straight to Layla agreeing with Tecna.

As usual, transformations are edited down, though interestingly, the very tail end of Flora's fairy dust drawing animation (as in, after the flower drawing disappears) is retained.

The Winx and the Specialists get attacked (again), and 4K does some weapon editing, as well as fix an animation mistake.

Original: While Flora's looking at the inscription on the Golden Kingdom door, it cuts to Sky asking what it says. Problem is, the prongs of the weapon that's thrown at Sky are already in shot a few seconds before we should see it.
4Kids: 4K erases the prongs from the start of the shot, and then uses a light effect to show the weapon being thrown into shot. Throughout the ensuing fight, the prongs are always covered with a light effect. http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a77/Rover_Wow/wccuts/3x21-ProngsIssue.jpg

Also, Layla/Aisha.... Let's just say that, before Nick, every dub except the Italian one called her Aisha.

Posted by: mightymarty2 Sep 14 2014, 8:59 AM

With most of these the reality is that it makes no difference the edits neither is better than the other. Excpet the removal of the early appearance of the spears.

I guess the flashback is good for a quick reminder of what had happened but for 2 episodes earlier it is less important. Unless you are showing episodes like nick is.

On the Layla and Nabu arranged marriage it seems to me that Nick is the best, followed by the original with 4kids in last place

Posted by: SpiderBraids Oct 6 2014, 3:58 PM

Moving on to 3x22, and we see Riven fighting Ophir. 4K edits out one seriously violent moment...
Unedited: There is a half-second close-up shot of Riven's kick making contact with Ophir's mouth.
Edited: This shot is removed, so it goes from Riven doing his kick to Ophir flying off from the kick.

Another case of 4Kids filling up silence, after Ophir tells Riven that "nothing's going on between me and Musa" (plus a cut):
Unedited: (Musa walks up to Riven, and Riven sighs) Musa: Mm, nice to see you go to bat for me, Riven. (shot of Flora and Aisha walking) Riven: Really? Musa: Yeah! I'm really glad you decided to join us.
Edited: Musa: But it's very valiant of you to want to duel for me. Riven: Yeah? Musa: Yeah. I'm really glad you came, Riven. (shot of Flora and Aisha walking, rest of exchange here has been edited out)

Whereas last episode only showed the very end of Flora's fairy dust drawing animation, this one shows the very start of Stella's animation, showing her holding her bottle, when the Winx decide to shrink.

Interestingly, the owl in the labyrinth describes in all three of the English dubs that the Water Stars are indeed the opposite of the Dragon Fire. (Rather than Dragon Flame as Nick and Rai use)

An interesting change when the girls are talking to the nymph Arcadia in the Crystal Labyrinth. So anyways, she explains that if they can't find their way out of the labyrinth, they will have to stay in it...

Unedited:
Tecna: You mean like, forever?
Cut to Musa: Hey, where are Layla and Flora?
Stella: More importantly, where are we?
This then follows into the bit with the Specialists and Bloom playing games.

Edited:
Tecna: You mean, forever? (Tecna puts her arms down unlike in the original, by running the footage backwards)
(Alteration of earlier shot to show the nymph, as well as Flora and Layla, disappearing and the whole scenery changing from yellow to blue, to match the actual maze)
Cut to Musa: Hey, where are Layla and Flora?
Stella: More importantly, where are we?
This is then followed by the girls walking into the maze. (This part doesn't come until after the Specialists playing scene in the original)

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a77/Rover_Wow/wccuts/3x22-MazeChanges.jpg, and note that part of Stella's arm has accidentally been erased in the modified shot mentioned above.

An animation error has been smoothed over in the 4Kids dub, after Timmy throws his ball off the rocks, where Timmy jumpcuts from one pose to a rather different one in the original.

The girls walk into the maze, as the girls have their own strategy for finding their way. Stella looks for the best-looking path, while Tecna is going to think logically. Of course they would icon_smile.gif Musa's idea differs between original and 4Kids.
Unedited: Naturally, her idea ties into music: "I'd rather play it by ear. Listen to this, now that speaks to me."
Edited: Musa's idea does not tie in to music: "It's better to follow your feelings."

During Stella's scene, 4K adds a closeup shot of Arcadia at two different points: Immediately after Stella's comments after looking in the mirror (4K!Arcadia tells her to look in the other mirror), and then after Stella asks if her faceless look is how she'll look from now on (4K!Arcadia's response is longer).

The Winx exit the maze:
Unedited: After the door opens behind Flora, we see the Winx running out of the maze and hearing the ruckus going on, before cutting back to the battle.
Edited: 4K cuts from the door opening straight back to the battle.

The Winx confront Icy:
Unedited: (Icy looks teed off) Musa: "Let's do this quick, with a convergence spell" Stella: "Good idea!" (Cut to Sky being punched by Darcy, then cut back to show the Winx's convergence spell)
Edited: (4K skips Icy looking teed off) Musa: "And how because of that, our convergence spells are so powerful." (4K skips Stella's line, and Sky getting punched, straight to the Winx's convergence spell)

4Kids skips a good chunk of the epilogue:
Unedited: After the Trix head off, we see the specialists walking across the meadow, before showing the Winx telling Bloom about their time in the labyrinth:

Spoiler!

Flora: Girls, I just want to tell you that I'm so proud of how you dealt with that whole labyrinth situation.
Bloom: Yeah, sounds like it was quite an ordeal you had to go through.
Stella: We didn't do anything you wouldn't have.

Edited: After the Trix head off, 4K skips the above exchange to the next scene described below.

Bloom holds up the box for the Water Stars:
Unedited: "This box contains the three Water Stars that Musa, Tecna and Stella risked everything to get."
Edited: The 4K dialog has a mistake... "In here are three ancient Water Stars that Musa, Layla and Stella risked everything to get." icon_confused.gif

Poor Tecna, she gets ignored every time. =( tongue.gif

A lot of minor changes that make no difference but for getting rid of a few punches making contact that I don't really see the point of its not that violent and there is no blood. The talk on Music for Musa makes sence given what her choice is. I do think they should have left the text in.

Yep, poor Tecna forgotten and surprised it made it past the checks

Posted by: SpiderBraids Oct 31 2014, 4:45 PM

Due to the known issues with 4K 3x23, here's a special surprise... More differences from the Halloween episode icon_smile.gif

The opening scene:
Unedited: The girls talk about their midterm reports while passing around information on the Halloween party a la "telephone" game, causing the message to become rather badly mangled by the time it reaches Tecna icon_smile.gif
Edited: The girls talk about how they're going to do a study report on Halloween. There is no "telephone" game.

The Winx girls head off:
Unedited: Bloom: "Even though in Gardenia only little kids can see you, try to stay out of trouble..." Bloom teleports off in the middle of that sentence, which raises a couple of questions. Pixies: "Promise!"
Edited: Bloom just ends her sentence before teleporting off, and the pixies follow her dust trail.

At the party:
Unedited: The drink that Mitzi offers Bloom is called a Screaming Mary.
Edited: The drink that Mitzi offers Bloom is cherry soda.

Unedited: Musa and Jolly seem to react to the faceless girls in the previous scene.
Jolly: "Did you see some strange girls back there?"
Musa: "Relax Jolly, they're just Mitzi's boring friends with costumes on. They think they're so cool..."
(Mitzi talks to Freddy Kruger about Musa talking to herself)
Jolly: "We'll soon be facing our doom, I can feel it icon_sad.gif"
Musa: "Hungry is what I feel." (Cake scene follows)
Edited: Musa says her usual slang, as Jolly engages in a little foreshadowing:
Jolly: "I don't like this place! You've all had your fun, please get out of here now!"
Musa: "Chillax Jolly, we'll leave soon enough, but we're getting good info here, you know, for the report."
(Mitzi talks to Freddy Kruger about Musa talking to herself... 4Kids has erased the splodges from his face)
Jolly: "I don't trust this girl Mitzi. She wears too much perfume."
Musa: "I can smell it from here." (Cake scene is skipped)

There appears to have been an effort to reduce Freddy's screen time in the episode, as not only does the cut cake scene feature him, but also in the final dancing scene, the bit with Musa dancing with Freddy is removed. Also:
Unedited: Musa's dance with Freddy is followed by a scene of the pixies playing with pumpkins, then shots of Layla and Stella dancing with guests. After the Mitzi/Vader exchange, we see the CD player kid talking with a medieval knight dude, then a (rather creepy) shot of a scarecrow guest walking out of the villa.
Edited: The shot of Layla dancing is mirrored, Stella's dance with the hat girl is also removed, and after Mitzi/Vader, the shot of the pixies playing with the pumpkins ends the episode, omitting the CD player kid and the scarecrow (thankfully icon_wink.gif)

It seems a lot of the changes are caused by this report studying halloween.

Its a shame they changes the name of the drink even if the writters just gave it a spooky name and not its real name.

I prefer the unedited version as its more timeless and fits in better with the whole episode as Jolly has been warning the winx and they have been ignoring her all episode.

Its a shame that so much has been cut from the end

Posted by: SpiderBraids Nov 15 2014, 3:45 PM

Well, drinking isn't really tolerated on US kids' TV, so I imagine that 4K might not want to give even the slightest impression that the Winx are engaged in underage drinking. The previous two season finales also had drink-related edits:

S1 finale:
Unedited: Saladin is shown drinking at the finale party.
Edited: Over the establishing shots of the party, we hear Saladin say, "It's no secret that I love milkshakes, but I really shouldn't" FG: "Oh c'mon, forget about your prim and proper for one night. It's a night to party!"

S2 finale:
http://magixclub.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=6541&view=findpost&p=457307 the changed liquid in FG and Griffin's glasses, and here's another:
Unedited: Chatta drags over a cup of cappuccino for Piff to drink.
Edited: It's a cocoa, and when Piff says "Cocoa!" Chatta adds that it's her first word. Not really true, but she was still in Darkar's cell when Piff said "Bye-bye Layla!" (In both cases, Piff was making her usual noises in the original)

Due to the well documented issues with 3x23, we skip straight ahead to 3x24. We open with a nightmare Bloom is having about the events of the previous episode. To their credit, 4Kids presents it mostly intact, but does change Stella's line in the middle of the sequence:

Unedited: "That's a serious problem. Maybe you should go and see Ms. Faragonda and ask her for advice. After all, she is a great source of information and is always more than ready to help."
Edited: (Baltor: "Anyway, that's how it all ended.") "Hello Bloom, did you hear? The school's changing its name from Alfea. We're gonna be called Baltor High from now on, isn't that so awesome?"

Unedited: Near the end of the nightmare, we're shown pictures of the ancestral witches, Mike and Vanessa, a blurry image of Oritel and Marian, the ancestral witches, ending with a picture of Valtor.
Edited: We're just shown Baltor.

The girls and FG have a seance. 4K tries to make sense of the footage...
Unedited: The other girls disappear, leaving Bloom and FG sitting in chairs. FG has some good news and bad news: The ancestral witches did not respond, but their magic essence is still very active in the crypt of CT. Flashcut to Stella telling Bloom "That is fantastic news Bloom!" Bloom: "It's encouraging, but it's not going to be easy. Valtor obliterated Cloud Tower, supposedly, yet it still appeared in the vision." Flashcut back to FG: "Which means that Cloud Tower wasn't actually destroyed." Flashcut to Bloom and Stella having a look of realization on their faces, before flashcutting back to FG: "Bloom, you must make your way to Cloud Tower, and enter the crypt despite the fact that the castle is no longer there." Flashcut back to Stella and Bloom having a look of determination, then flashcut to the next scene.
Edited: During the seance, FG tells the other girls: "Leave us now girls, Bloom and I will finish the journey alone." Flashcut to FG and Bloom in chairs. FG says of Bloom cringing: "You felt that, a jolt of dark energy. The essence of the three ancestral witches still exists, and it's located in Cloud Tower's crypt." Flashcut to Stella telling Bloom "Woohoo, that is fantastic news!" Bloom: "Well, it's good that their essence still exists in Cloud Tower, but the question is: does Cloud Tower still even exist?" It then immediately cuts to the next scene.

The next scene is the girls using the Water Stars to reveal Cloud Tower's existence.

Unedited: Stella: "In my opinion, what she (FG) meant was that Cloud Tower still exists somewhere, except that no one knows exactly where, so I propose we focus on finding out where the castle went when it disappeared." Bloom: "Alright then, let's start from the beginning. Valtor cast a spell and the castle disappeared. If we're to find out what happened to it, we've got to break that spell. To do that, we need to know what kind of spell Valtor used."
Edited: 4K!Stella thinks in terms of fashion: "It would help if we knew what kind of spell was cast. I mean it's like this time in sixth grade, when this mean girl cast this spell on my really cute sweater and turned it plaid. Once I knew what kind of spell I was able to turn it back." (4Kids cuts out the start of Bloom's line) "Except that this is an entire school, and Baltor's not a 6th grader."

In the previous episode, it was pointed out that the Water Stars could sap away Bloom's power, so the girls should be concerned about using them on Cloud Tower. However, the two dubs handle this differently:

Unedited: They do not address the issue with the Water Stars affecting Bloom.
Edited: They do address the issue with the Water Stars, as Bloom says "They only affect me when they're activated, so I'll put up a shield to protect myself." (No visual changes to effect this have been made, though.)

The other Winx girls shrink to a mini size.
Unedited: Due to a miscolor, Layla looks like she's exposing herself (!)
Edited: A http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a77/Rover_Wow/wccuts/3x24-LaylaFixing.jpg has been made to make Layla's outfit look a bit more modest.

Tecna, Flora and Musa cast a spell on the Trix:
Unedited: We're not given a specific spell name as they just say "Convergence Enchantix Power" as they freeze up the Trix. Musa: "Come on Icy, loosen up. You look a little stiff today icon_biggrin.gif" Icy: "You think I'm stiff huh? Just you wait until I undo your puny little spell."
Edited: Musa calls it out as a "Time Freeze", replete with an appropriate "slowing down" sound effect. Musa: "Consider yourselves to have just received a time out icon_smile.gif" Icy's line is snipped, because it wouldn't make sense for her to speak...

Bloom encounters the ancestral witches to ask about her parents.
Unedited: The discussion more or less just peters out.
AW: "They're outside of this realm, in a dimension far, far, away." B: "Nothing is too far for me. I want to meet them, I want to get to know them." AW: "Slow down fairy, do you really think it's that simple?" B: "Just tell me where my parents are, I've got to know, this is too important." (Black void fades out back to the CT cellar) "Hey wait, don't go away, you can't leave me like this, you can't... *sigh*"
Edited: The witches are more blunt about being parsimonious about the information...
AW: "In a place far far away, not in this realm, or even this dimension." B: "Nothing is too far away for me. Tell me where they are and I'll go there!" AW: "It is not a place you can go, and that is all we will say!!"

The 4K voice for the witch comes across as more menacing than her unedited dub counterpart. I'll let you think whether that makes it better...

4K appears to have edited out the production info frame that appears after Bloom calls out "Enchantix Final Attack" in the original and Nick dubs, or says "Let's dust these witches" in the 4K dub. It appears that Nick also edited out the duff frame as well. And of course, 4K edits out the fairy dust.

At the start of the final Alfea scene, the transition to inside the library is different:
Unedited: A simple fade
Edited: A split-wipe from centre

Well the first change seems a bit pointless as Saladin is no where near the drinking age

The change of drink for Piff makes sence given I think its not recommended to give coffee to someone so young

really does seem like its at different points of the episode given the two lines out of context

Really doesn't make much difference though it is nice to see the others who are involved

It doesn't make much difference but the more context the better

It does seem more worth while discussing the water stars affect on Bloom

Fixing the problems caused by a mistake is a good idea

I do prefer the original as it does seem to work better

I do agree with you regarding the voice but the original does have a better lines.

On to 3x25 now... After Valtor releases his spells on Red Fountain, we see Saladin and Griffin having a conference call with Faragonda.
Unedited: Both teachers are animated with full opacity, like they are physically present in FG's room.
Edited: 4Kids gives the characters some transparency, and adds a bit of a scanning effect on Saladin. It also appears that they have replaced the background for Saladin to facilitate this change.
http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a77/Rover_Wow/wccuts/3x25-ConfCall.jpg

There are quite a few minor snips here and there during the next couple minutes. For example, after Sky sets up a bomb inside one of the tornadoes, 4K cuts out Timmy saying "Roger that" before telling Helia to activate the bombs.

Flora reaches into the dry lake bed.
Unedited: Flora's hand goes through the dry lake bed with a little water shimmer effect.
Edited: 4Kids adds a red glow to the scene when Flora's hand penetrates the bed.
http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a77/Rover_Wow/wccuts/3x25-LightEffect.jpg

4Kids edits out the fairy dust (as usual), but not the obvious animation mistake (Bloom holding a Water Star instead of her fairy dust bottle as she's supposed to be).

More minor snips, as the Winx see the water returning to the lake bed:
Unedited: The original version pans over from Musa et al. to Tecna and Layla.
Edited: It just cuts from Musa et al. to Tecna and Layla.

Unedited: After the Trix leave through some hole in the roof, we pan over to the Winx before showing water bursting from holes in the walls.
Edited: The Trix leave, and we cut to the water bursting from the walls.

After the Trix are all washed up (until season 5, anyway icon_smile.gif ), we get a quick whistlestop tour of Andros, Solaria and Oppositus (3x14) returning to normal (think Return of the Jedi, special edition epilogue icon_wink.gif)

Unedited: We're shown the realms without anything extra.
Edited: We're given textual captions telling where each place is. Probably most useful for Oppositus...
http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a77/Rover_Wow/wccuts/3x25-Captions.jpg

Also...
Unedited: We spend quite a bit of time on Andros, including scenes of Ligea watching some of the mermaids twirling in celebration, and Tressa (3x05) hugging her fellow mermaid friends.
Edited: Most of the sequence is removed, leaving just shots of the portal guards returning to normal and a wide shot of the mermaids twirling.

These edits don't make much difference except for minor cosmetic differences. Although the text is helpful.

We come to the end of our long comparison journey with the season 3 finale.

Normally, I do not note spell name changes, as it's almost a given. However, it is notable when Stella casts a spell to block Brandon from a gushing stream:
Unedited: It's called an Enchantix Moon Shield, even though it's orange icon_confused.gif
Edited: It's called an Enchantix Sun Shield.

Musa decides to use her fairy dust to heal Riven:
Unedited: After the transformation, we're shown Musa taking out her fairy dust bottle (followed by the usual animation), and after Riven slumps to the ground, we see Musa rush to his side.
Edited: We go straight from the end of the transformation to Musa sprinkling her dust, and after Riven slumps down, we skip straight to Bloom's scene.

Flora, Layla, Helia and Nabu come across the other Specialists in a cage.
Unedited: Layla (and Flora) decide to transform and we see their transformations, before heading back to Tecna.
Edited: We completely skip the transformation, plus the bumper animation leading back to Tecna (as well as those for the other girls). These bumper animations play several times, so they add up. (And it also has the effect of making the sequence much more frenetic icon_confused.gif)

Valtor talks to the Ancestral Witches in a non-descript blue-ish void.
Unedited: The scene is presented normally
Edited: 4Kids appears to have added a dark vignette around the scene (it's most clear when showing extreme closeups of Baltor's face)

Later, when Bloom is talking with Valtor, the same vignette effect is added to their scenes as well. (http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a77/Rover_Wow/wccuts/3x26-Vignetting.jpg) 4Kids also reuses a short bit from earlier in the sequence, and as usual, Bloom's fairy dust animation is edited out.

Final party, and 4Kids removes one last bit of silence...
Unedited: Layla and Nabu walking together at the party.
Edited: Over the shot of them holding hands, Nabu says: "You're the best thing that ever happened to me, Layla." (The abrupt cut at the kiss was always there, though)

And on that note, I leave you with http://www.dailymotion.com/spiderbraids to some of the comparison videos I made back in the day icon_smile.gif

Well the name makes more sence in the edited version but its a shame the moon seems to have been droped from Stella's powers

The unedited is better here as it shows more emotion and builds up a little more tension

The edited version clearly seems to have been done for timing reasons but as it was the last couple of episodes it would have been nice to see enchantix transformation fully one last time

This does not really make much difference

Its a shame the silence was removed

Overall that was pretty cool! I liked the unedited version for most comparisons. the edited cut too much out. Thanks for noting all this. Maybe you could do Season 4 original versus Nickelodeon?

Are there any notable differences?
Last time I checked, while it wasn't word for word, there wasn't any M'usa Princess (?) of her Planet' situations. (No, I will never get over that one.)
