Apart from playing out your character, it's also storytelling via text-based posts. Most good RPs try to balance story with equal shares of social interaction and combat, and both systems require that you fully understand your character's personality and abilities and implement them using common sense and logic. Also, if you ever struggle with things in an RP, you can always talk to everyone else or even the leader for advice. The whole point is to play out a story successfully so everyone can have fun.
Or at least that's how I see it thus far. Anyone can feel free to correct me.
Here. Read this one. It used to be our longest-lasting and has been the best example of what an RP should be - or at least the basics of it, anyways. Just read a few pages past the bios if you don't feel like plunging through the entire thing, and you should get the hang of it.
