I personally think Flora is too sweet, but thats just me... I'd just like to see her get angry or something like a normal person would...(its only my opinion, no offense to flora fans..) It's not the nature thing for me really (since I like plants and animals...well, some of them.)

I don't like her for many reasons:
1) She's a boring character in my opinion
2) She's going out with Nabu now (I liked that she was independent before)
3) She's not part of the original five
4) She seemed to be a main focus of attention throughout seasons 2 and 3
5) To me, she seemed to get in between Musa and Tecna's friendship (she even stole Tecna's bed in an episode for goodness sake).
6) She seems a bit snobbish

That's my opinion, no offense to Layla fans. I do like some things about her, (like her winx outfit), but I just don't like her as a character.

I'd have to agree with Boo (and I too actually love her normal Winx outfit ^^). Layla all but bumped Tecna out of getting any chance to connect with Musa and form one decent friendship on that show. It seems to be that most people prefer Layla over Tecna (is it because everyone thinks Tecna is too responsible and mature? I actually think those are awesome traits). I'm sure everyone loves Layla because she's a tomboy and she sticks up to boys, however her attitude is what I have the most problem with. Her "snobbish" attitude stems from what I see as superiority complex, namely the attitude she takes up with anyone who challenges her. The poor boyfriends are nice guys and she didn't even give them a chance at the beginning. She threw her attitude in their faces and acted horribly tomboy-ish, if that's a word, lol. The word that comes to mind is "fem-nazi", or someone who tries to play up the feminist role but ends up going overboard. Overall, I don't hate Layla, and at times she can be very nice, but there are times when her attitude comes out too strongly and that is not what I see fit for younger girls to emulate. It's okay to speak your mind, but don't do it in a way that makes you appear "superior" to everyone around you. I hope this made sense. I don't hate her, I just want some parts of her personality to relax and change, which is why I place her below the other girls.

'zactly. I could even forgive "bumping" Tecna out of the way. But the the things she said and her attitude to the guys were uncalled for. Even if she came from a family where arranged marriages were forced, I can't forgive her character for being rude to people, whether they are males or females. It seems like she was taking out her marriage problems on the poor boys, who were only trying to be nice to her and surprisingly were not rude back. I don't even think Riven fought back with her? 'Cuz the boys are nice guys =P.

If they did, the writers would have made Layla win the fight, no doubt, as she wins everything it seems. Too much perfection, not realistic. She should be able to make mistakes too. And I have a feeling she assumes she's always right (but then again, that's just the vibe I get from her).

Indeed. Nobody likes it when things come easily for a character, especially if they're the main protagonist. They need to have some failings, either before the story and revealed in flashbacks at an appropriate time, or those that become apparant in the storyline.

However, finding out about your past and then angsting about it to the point of being completely useless... *cough*BLOOM/SASUKE UCHIHA/JUDAI YUKI*uncough* only to regain one's fighting spirit and come in and wipe out the competition is a weak and rather disappointing way to deal with it.

I have to agree with you there Morrigan. When everything falls easily into the lap of a character it tends to make the story (if they happen to be the main character) too boring. I think all of the Winx girls have made some mistake(s) thus far in the series, except Layla. I can't relate to her until I see she is human, instead of the perfectionist they try to make her out to be.

I also feel slightly bad writing about why I dislike characters when I know some of the younger readers won't quite understand why I criticize some of their personalities. I know a lot of Winx watchers like the main character because of the same reasons everyone likes female protagonists: pretty, nice, strong, etc. I hope they understand that as an older viewer I find it very hard to like a character based solely on the fact that they are pretty and nice, and that it is okay to analyze and delve deeper to find out why they like that character. After all, in real life there is so much more going on under the surface of a character than just their looks or overall attitude.

Indeed. Although, to be fair, they might be trying to avoid making Layla look flawed because it could seem racist. Which is pretty childish, IMHO.

One of the reasons I liked The Big O so much is it's unconventional protagonist. Normally in a Super Robot series, the hero is some hot-blooded, dense teenager, while O's Roger Smith is a well-to-do, skilled negotiator with a quirky sense of humor who is someone that younger viewers can aspire to be and older viewers can relate to.

Kinnikuman (Ultimate Muscle's prequel) is similar, in how Suguru's in his twenties and a complete idiot whenever the plot demands it. But the rest of the time, he's perfectly capable of figuring out things nobody else can, displays skill in refining certain techniques and doing them in new ways, and we viewers can see him grow as a person in the first arc where he was nothing more than a bumbling, lazy coward to how he is in the final arc: a guy capable of predicting the actions of not only his enemies, but his friends.

Characters such as you describe are the reason I still watch cartoons today.

(Ah, "Big O", an anime I actually think I liked ^^. The protagonist was pretty awesome and the correlations to "Batman" made it all the better. Ranks close to Cowboy Bebop in my opinion.)

If you ever get into the Super Robot Wars franchise, I'd advise downloading an emulation of Super Robot Wars D. Roger serves a key role in the story, in that he helps convince Treize to get back in charge of the OZ and help out the heroes since it's the only organization out there with not only the manpower to get some order back on Earth -which is a hellhole thanks to the combined effects of the White Fang and the Principality of Zabi and the Invaders from Getter Robo- but has the resources to protect the people that are still alive.

The chapter in which the heroes from Mobile Suit Gundam, Zeta Gundam, Double Zeta Gundam, Gundam Wing, Victory Gundam, and F91 Crossbone Gundam is an amazing one to play, simply because of the fanboy/girlism running rampant in it.

On subject though:
I also dislike how the Trix seem to be cardboard cut-out villains as well. The only one that the writers even had a chance at humanizing seems to be Darcy, what with her relationship with Riven. Heck, they could've had her display second thought about the whole "take over the Universe" thing and had her join the protagonists at the end of season 1, and she would've made a *MUCH* better "Sixth Ranger" than Layla, IMO. Not to mention her motif in question, being Darkness, would've made for quite the delicious irony.

And I likes my irony.

Lovin' the idea of having Darcy switch over. I can see why the producers opted not to though. They had to somehow keep the Coven of Three stable, and if they took Darcy out, they would have to replace her with someone who could never properly fit the threesome team. No one could really replace Darcy, but if they could somehow have done away with the Trio theme, it might have been a great idea. It may have added some seriousness to the Winx girl team, but then that risks being too mature...and I'm sure their intention was too keep this scaled down for the young'uns. But it is fun to imagine.

(the crossover episode sounds hilarious, I hope it was ^^. If they even remotely made fun of the fan girls and boys I applaud. And it never fails, I try to look "Super Robot Wars D. Roger" up in a google image search and I get the worst kind of fanart. The dirty kind. It did have a robot in the picture, but the majority of the picture was so irrelevant I don't even know why I bother to use image searches anymore. This show is a crossover with Roger from "The Big O"? *always confused by crossovers*)

Well, if Darcy had changed sides, she could have very easily served the role as a strategist and display a clever nature to work with Tecna's wisedom that would hang back and not go in guns blazing. Icy and Stormy could've done something else, heck, even take private lessons from Griffon for all I care to be her successors. Anything better than "LOLZ! LET'S GOT AND SERVE WHATEVER CARDBOARD VILLAIN COMES ALONG!"

And it wasn't an episode. Super Robot Wars is a long-running franchise of video games in Japan that have all the various Super/Real Robot anime series coming together and fighting alongside each other. Most of the games occur in seperate universes, although the Original Generation, Classic Timeline, and Alpha Timeline games all tell one coherent storyline.

^Sound's a little out of sync, but it's not bad.

Big O's appeared in one game, Super Robot Wars Destiny. The game was disliked by some because the Super Robots were not very good at tanking in it, but I personally like it since in comparison to Super Robot Wars 3, they take far less damage anyways, and they have lots of unconventional series included, including Big O.

As for Darcy's crossover, oh nooo, we can't do that. That would put too much attention on the rift between Icy/Stormy and Darcy, and we can't have Bloom's camera time sacrificed xD. (no offense to Bloom lovers, it's just too easy to pic on her, hehe)

Well, "rift" might not be the best word for it. I'm not saying the would absolutely hate each other, it's just it seems Darcy is the most mature of the three. Stormy is rather hot-headed and Icy is too ambitious for her own good. And without her being there to give advice, it could very well force those two to grow up as well.

And Darcy, being the intellectual of the three, would be the one able to most easily see one can have a tremendous influence on civilization as a respectable member of it.

And yes, Straffi would never allow that to happen. Which is a cryin' shame because if they actually bothered to do that and cleaned up the artwork for my tastes, I'd have half a mind to watch it.

Damn, it's happening again. I'm getting that terrible urge to start a fanfiction project revamping the whole accursed series and actually make it something I can at least respect. And I can't do that until I lay to rest a number of projects that have dragged on for far, far too long.

Don't suffer yourself too much with the "if's" and "could be's" =P. I've been told too many times "You're an adult. If you find yourself criticizing a children's show then you obviously shouldn't be watching it." .... And then I continue to watch it anyway, but pout in the background =P. If you do make fanfics in the future I hope they relieve some of your plot line frustrations ^^.

Eh, I just don't watch it. I can't stand the artwork nor the voice actors -even the original Italian ones-. I only come on here because my dislike of the show is a reasonable one, in which I've looked into the story via other means -like Wik- and can honestly say "I don't like it", rather than be like those critics of Harry Potter who think it's about devil worship when they've never even read a single page of it. Since I do know so much about it, I figure 'why not actually talk with people about it'.

@Morrigan, no problem. I don't think there are a lot of adults who could actually stand the show as it is, so I can definitely understand your dislike of most of the plot and sometimes the poor character development. I bet you might prefer the anime style of animation? Or at least something a bit more fluid than the Italian animation. I used to live on western Disney animation so whenever I find a cartoon that still uses western animation styles I cling to it, kind of like Winx Club and W.I.T.C.H. . I've never really liked anime style animation, but I can't say that I haven't appreciated at least a handful of the very well drawn series (such as Cowboy Bebop).

Yeah, I'm a glutton for anime. Even the older ones like Getter Robo and Mazinger Z, which milked about as much stock footage as they could. But I also liked the storylines and the quirky nature of them... that's one reason I sit down and watch Billy&Mandy or Chowder whenever they're on.

Woowwwie, I saw that pic on DA before, and I'm still impressed at how good it is!

Layla ordeal? I didn't like how she really pretty much became *the-main-character* for the Shadowhaunt epis.
And also, during Brandon&Sky's fight with Amentia&that big dude later in the season, why didn't she help? I mean, I know Sponsus was like, "No, you shouldn't!" But, seriously, she really could've gone in anyway. But nope, since Sky and Brandon are guys, she can't help.

God how can you stand her! Shes my least favourite, mostly because of the episode with her and Diaspro. Thats when I started to dislike Bloom, cause how can she go and accuse any random person of being a witch? And she kind of stole Sky from Diaspro.
I duno its just something about Bloom that I really hate. I think she's kind of the most stupid out of them for some reason. No offense to Bloom fans, I just don't really like her.
Layla, I like her actually, don't see anything wrong with her, just Bloom.
Flora's my favourite though, shes just so sweet and cute. How can you not like her?!
But yes no offense to Bloom lovers, I just don't like her. They just show way too much of her and portray her as a selfish character, always going on about her parents/kingdom etc. For example in the scene where I think Riven was in trouble or something, instead of paying attention to him she went and picked up the stupid book.
Grrr I really do not like her and I can't help but admit it. But I do like some things about her, like her Winx outfit. Her sister isnt that bad too

Wooooow, selfish? I'm sorry, but I don't think she's selfish. I don't blame the character looking selfish, I blame the writers that focus on only her. I guess this is the drawback for being the main character. But no, I don't think that her talking about her parents is selfish--A disappearing Queen and King, stuck somewhere because of three ancestral witches who destroyed their kingdom for power, who happen to be her long lost parents, and every time she does talk about her parents its not like she's ever said to someone else talking about their problems, "Okay, that's nothing compared to me, HAVE PITY ON ME." She hasn't really ever met her parents and she already lost her sister who is now a spirit nymph. I think she deserves a break. Also, concerning sounding selfish or self-absorbed, from the RAI, as much as I can remember, she's never called herself the most powerful fairy from the dragon flame, only Faragonda and I think Stella, I know Tecna said to her, "You are a princess after all" It looked like everyone put her in higher regards after that information, but herself. I think if she was either of those she would have talked about herself that way. It's kinda like calling her selfish in the movie after she has a birthday and Tecna gets nothing. It's a surprise for Bloom, and we don't know what date it is by the end of the movie.
There's self-absorbed, selfish, and self-pity. I do think she pities herself a bit, but then again it's still a new world to her.
Also, Riven, he's said before that guys can take care of himself. Once he's said that, he should expect it. He's a tough guy, he'll deal.

I'll admit though, she did do major wrong with Diaspro. She shouldn't have jumped to conclusions. But she didn't really steal Sky away from Diaspro. Sky never told Bloom about them, and he started liking Bloom more. I don't think Bloom would've been after him if she knew he was engaged.

Not to say Tecna had enough episodes to herself, There were some darn good Tecna-centric episodes.

Example: Angel of Doom

I just want people to realise, just because an episode doesn't reveal one's past, doesn't mean it isn't about them. Angel of Doom was about Tecna, clear and simple. And it was very satisfying, because it focussed on her information-hungering, kinda strong-headed attitude. It revealed a lot about her, without mentioning her home. Please don't play it down. I love that episode, and ranks in one of my favorites. It had suspense, humor, was well-taught out and showed a lot of Tecna, doing what she does best. (The 4Kids-dub screwed it over, tough) And it had Avalon wearing nothing more then a towel. Can't top that.

Good point (and excellent post!). I myself had pushed that episode to the sidelines when thinking of the amount of screentime Tecna has received. Maybe it was because it was aired so long ago... In any case, kudos for bringing that up!
I really should watch the Rai version, though. I can only imagine how terribly 4kids handled that episode.


And after seeing people revising their list, I feel obliged to do the same... (and include Roxy this time...)
Of course, and this comes as no surprise, Tecna is definitely still my favorite character.
Then comes the rest...
2. Stella (as always... There must be something with me and comic relief.)
3. Hmm... oh dear... Musa? Yes, Musa.
4. Flora (I like Musa a tad more.)
5. Bloom (Bleh... I think I like her more than Layla... despite her excessive amount of screentime)
6. Layla (Good outfits. Boring personality, in my opinion)
7. Roxy (I won't start ranting. You have all been spared!)

That's just my list though (I have the urge to say "My humble opinion", but it doesn't really apply that greatly here).

Hmm, let's see...

01. Bloom- Yup, I'm sorry. I really love Bloom. ((I've always been something of a pyro, besides, she has an interesting background XD)) She's edgy and proof that you can develop a character if you give her gobs of screen time. XD I'd have rather they divided it between the others rather than over playing Bloom. Oh well, yay fire and dragons! XD
02. Stella- She's so funny. She cracks me up and she's the best friend everyone wants, you know its true.
03. Musa - Yeah, I don't give her enough love. I loved her originally from the first season, she's just such an awesome character, she was edgy and ALL her transformations are gorgeous.
04. Tecna- Probably the tekkie geek in me that wants to play with her toys. She's so funny though, I love her sarcasm.
05. Flora - A little too sweet for me, but I like her, she's one of the originals, so she can stay.

People I'd vote off the Island...:
{Censored as not to offend fans of the following fairies. I'm sorry, my opinion. IF you don't want to hear it, don't highlight the blackness!}



06. Roxy - *sigh* And so we rip off Bloom...and stick her in a fairy stuck in denial and wants to be normal. Fine, I hereby remove your powers and inject them into someone with more personality.
07. Layla - She irks me, she's pushy, rude, arrogant, just...UGH. Go home. There's no point to you anymore! XD *cough*Asiftherewasonetobeginwith*cough*

Yeah, I'd have been reeeallly happy with the original five as the mains and the other two as a one season only deal. Sure, let them pop in now and then, but otherwise...

...Straffi's got Pokemon syndrome, he's got to have all 150 fairies in the club. -.-; Stop freakin' adding! XD

(Top three, 'Tied')

1: Bloom! =D Okay. She reminds me alot of myself. Except the whole screen time thing... I don't get much attention. Nearly every, 'which winx are you?' quiz... it's Bloom. Bloom~ XD
2: Layla. I don't now, but I've grown on to her in some weird way. I simply love her!
3: Musa. I've relised see is extremely cool. Seriously. No other way to explain.

4: Tecna
5: Flora
6: Stella (I don't hate her okay? XD I just like the others better)

I don't really now about Roxy yet... I'm still rough on that.

Because, y'know, adding two fairies in four seasons is just to much. Not to mention Season 4, in my opinion, was an attempted (And succeeded) re-boot after their Season 3, which was quite bad.
Why don't people like new characters being added? It might be because of my love for fighting games, but new characters added to the roster = win.

I mean, look at the Tekken 6; Bloodline rebellion roster. Of the EIGHT new characters added, only two didn't kick *ss. That's a 75% hit ratio. Not relevant, just my obsessed ranting.

I have no problem with them adding new characters...I just don't find Layla/Aisha or Roxy worth adding. XD Granted, Layla's got more orginality than Roxy, but not like much. I feel like they just ripped off Musa for Layla and Bloom for Roxy, you know? They should've just added Mirta too, she'd be a lot more interesting if we need to add faeries, what with her background and all.

Well, she's not really that dark. A bit Gothy, but not neccesarily dark (If anything, she's the cutest, sweetest girl on the show, no miracle she worked so well with Flora.). But yeah, her being a witch first and becoming a fairy is a way better backstory then Layla's or Roxy's.

gahh recently ive had trouble picking my favorite i mean at first and for two or three years it was Flora and only flora. But lately is shifted and i adore Tecna. and musa too, but i still love flora.. so hard to choose. ive noticed most of the newer fans seem to love mnostly bloom or stella. o.o

I can sense major opposition here. I find Layla an interesting character since she had to deal with grief and loss and her human weakness was displayed at the end of season 4. Though her introduction in Season 2 felt like 'oh we haven't got a dark-skinned fairy, let's add one in to be racially sensitive.' I felt her tomboyish attitude was great for conflicting with chauvanistic (is that the right word?) Riven. Layla and Stella are the most believable of the names. I have NEVER met anyone named Bloom, Flora or Tecna in my life. The closest would be 'Abebe' which means flower in Amharic. Though a MALE friend of mine is named Darcy
