Magix Club's Forum _ Music _ Songs That Just Make You Want to Stab Something

Posted by: Another Morning Aug 20 2009, 2:05 AM

We all have songs we love. And then there are the songs that are alright, we'll listen to them. Then songs we don't care either way about, and then songs we don't like. And then, there are those songs. The songs that cross the line from dislike to actual hatred. The songs that, in some, actually create feelings of violence, because you just hate them so much. Maybe they were played on the radio too much, maybe there's a bad memory associated with them, maybe you hate the lyrics, maybe there is no specific reason, you just loathe it.

What songs to do you totally hate?

For me, the first ones that come to mind are Big Girls Don't Cry by Fergie and Girlfriend by Avril Lavigne. The Fergie song wasn't too bad when I first heard it, I didn't really care about it either way. But then the radio station I listened to played it about every other song for months, and it seemed like most of the annoying people I knew thought it was the best song ever, so I came to associate it with the idiots and my school. Girlfriend just makes me mad in general, I hate the lyrics and, like the other song, all the people I don't like seem to love it.

Posted by: humbu111 Aug 20 2009, 2:40 AM

[noguests]Your post made me lol xD. Well for me most overplayed radio songs I like, but there's one in particular they just would play over and over again. Old School by Hedley. I mean usually overplayed songs stop being overplayed after some time, but this one OMG has just been played SO many times since it came out, its not even funny. I think it has to do with the fact that I live in Canada and Hedley is Canadian. Okay I admit after listening to it so many times I've grown on it sorta and it reminds me of last summer which was a really good one for me, but still. Its annoying.[/noguests]

Posted by: Toriamelio Aug 20 2009, 2:43 AM

ok so for me I just HATE S.O.S. by the Jonas Brothers... well... I don't really hate it I just hate all songs by the Jonas Brothers... well... actually... I just hate the Jonas Brothers.
I also just despise The Sweet Escape by Gwen Stefani. I don't really know why I hate this song I just do. Maybe It's because one of my dance teachers played it every day for worm ups the WHOLE year ( and trust me... worm ups are not fun at my dance school.) 8D

some heavy metal songs are horrible and make me feel annoyed

Posted by: dittadulla Aug 20 2009, 1:00 PM

Well uhh, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n-0tfHMDsbY just makes me want to throw up at this point, it was overplayed in the radio the whole summer last year X___X A-and maybe some songs in Eurovision annoy me, but I forgeeet which. Jan-Jan is annoying but that one gets stuck in my head if you name it {Oh haha guess what just happened}, but it's so annoyiiiing.

Posted by: P-girl Aug 20 2009, 1:02 PM

It's not specific songs, but I don't like Emo-songs and other 'Boohoo, I'm so sad, my life is so empty and I don't have anything..... except for millions of dollars, multiple houses and people who adore me.' type of songs. (Lookin' at you, Miley)
Linkin Park might get a pass since I feel they were there for me in a difficult time. That, and they actually got a good style goin' on.

Posted by: Another Morning Aug 20 2009, 1:12 PM

Yeah, I don't really like their newer stuff, but I still listen to old Linkin Park songs XD I just like how they sound, even if they are kind of emo.

Song I just remembered that I hate: Mariah Carey - We Belong Together

Posted by: dittadulla Aug 20 2009, 1:21 PM

Ohhh that reminds me: No one - Mariah Carey

It's soo annoying. "No one, no oneee, nooo oneeeee" X__X

Posted by: Another Morning Aug 20 2009, 1:27 PM

Actually...nearly anything of Mariah Carey's annoys me, except for her really older stuff. .___.;

Posted by: Winx4eva! Aug 20 2009, 2:40 PM

Hmm...Stab something you say?

Dunno...I don't really have a hated song... xD I've never thought of that...

Posted by: CaffinatedAngst Aug 20 2009, 3:29 PM

Generic cookie cutter pop. Specifically Hannah Montana/ Miley Cyrus and the Jonas Brothers.

I'm also annoyed when groups don't write there own music. I can see doing a cover or two, but I don't get the point of paying someone to write your songs for you.

Thats weird, Alicia Keys has a song called No One where the exact same line is sung. [/noguests]

Ohhh scr*w meeee.

It *was* Alicia Keys XD

Posted by: W.I.N.X Aug 24 2009, 8:43 AM

The Jonas Brother's version of Year 300 annoys me. And the music video as well, for innaccuracy in terms of lyrics.

Posted by: winxclubrox23 Sep 3 2009, 11:27 PM

Generally anything by the Jonas Brothers, Miley Cyrus, Selena Gomez and Demi Lavoto irk me. Miley and Selena butcher old school Disney songs, which really really irks me. Demi can't sing, and the Jonas Brothers are too cookie cutter for my taste.

Posted by: Another Morning Sep 3 2009, 11:45 PM

The Jonas Brothers did a cover of Poor Unfortunate Souls. There is a music video. I may have flown into a violent rage after seeing/hearing it, I'm not too sure, I tried to block most of the experience out.

Posted by: winxclubrox23 Sep 3 2009, 11:50 PM

*Facepalm* Oh yes. That. I've heard it several times. The worst one is Miley Cyrus: Part of Your World.

Posted by: StellaRocks Sep 3 2009, 11:51 PM

ditto what winx said i really think that Jonas Brothers, Miley Cyrus, Selena Gomez and Demi Lavoto cant sing at all

Posted by: Another Morning Sep 4 2009, 12:00 AM

I took the Jonas Brothers one personally because Poor Unfortunate Souls is pretty much my all-time favorite Disney song.

Posted by: Jahnavi Sep 4 2009, 3:24 AM

I agree that they shouldn't do covers of old Disney songs, when the originals already own them, and I personally don't really like Miley Cyrus (as a person, mostly; a few of her songs are okay, but I really dislike her as a person). I'm kind of a fan of Selena and Demi; I like them, but I'm pretty indifferent, I guess... However, as a *huge* Jonas Brothers fan, I think it's best I stop this mini-rant right now, before someone wants to hit me. xD

Posted by: Another Morning Sep 4 2009, 3:52 AM

Yeah, just to make things clear, I don't think anybody means that they dislike the people who like these songs/music, just the songs/music itself.

And most of the Disney covers don't even make since, since the song is part of a storyline and outside of the movie it's just kind of random, especially songs like Poor Unfortunate Souls.

Posted by: Jahnavi Sep 4 2009, 3:55 AM

I know you guys don't mean any offence at the people who may like the artists you dislike, I just thought it would be better to not go into fan-girl mode, since I know most of you don't like the Jonas Brothers. But that's your opinion, and I respect that. ^^

Posted by: Purityangel Sep 19 2009, 11:30 PM

I hate Rap songs, they make no sense whatsoever and I have no idea what they're even talking about. I'm just a sophisticated young woman who takes things seriously, so please don't lash me out. I don't intend to start a conflict with anyone.

Posted by: Boo Sep 20 2009, 4:20 AM

I just heard this one again today: Right Round. To be honest, I do not care who it is by, all I know is that I think it's terrible and every time I hear it I burst into a rant about how terribly raunchy it is (as most rap songs are). I mean, they took an old song, (by Dead or Alive in, what, the 80s?), and created an overly-raunchy modern one (the original was PERFECTLY FINE!). The first time I heard it (the new version), all I was thinking was: Oh no they didn't! They did NOT just take another perfectly good song and ruin it. (Rap+Good Song Originally= Bad song in most cases, in my opinion)

In fact, a DJ today played that song... I went up and demanded that he play the original; You Spin Me (Like A Record)... and he did. Muwaha! I felt quite accomplished. icon_mrgreen.gif

That and "You Belong With Me" by Taylor Swift. No offense to her massive amount of fans, but I do not like her music (I don't like country anyway, and her live performance on a New Years Eve special scored her some really low points in my book.) That specific song, though, reminds me of "Girl Next Door" by Saving Jane.... The lyrics are just too similar. It annoys me, really.

And finally, on my list; any song by Miley Cyrus. Again, no offense to her fans, but I just do not like her. Although, I do like that she enjoys Coldplay... (because Coldplay is amazing.) icon_biggrin.gif Actually, anything by a modern Disney-owned group or individual is "not good music" in my book, (Demi... Not going to attempt to spell her last name, Jonas Brothers, etc.)

I mean absolutely no offense to anyone with any of this. It's simply my musical taste.... happy.gif I do suppose that I'm not "hip" and with the "in" crowd. xD

I thought the same thing! and i tell EVERYONE but nobody belives me.

So any song by Miley Cyrus, Coldplay, Demi Lavto, Jonas Brothers(minus one song Nick sung when he was little i love it),Selena Gomez, and I Got a Feeling by Black Eye Peas. I CANT stand them or the songs.

Posted by: winxclubrox23 Sep 20 2009, 4:28 AM

Aw, I love Taylor Swift. And Saving Jane too...ooh, I can't pick a fave. I'd probably go with...oh, gosh...I can't choose.

Posted by: Toriamelio Sep 20 2009, 5:13 AM

XD I thought this was a topic that you state songs you loathe. Not songs you adore. lol

Katy Perry - Waking Up In Vegas

Ever since Hot and Cold Katy Perry's songs have annoyed me :/ I dunno why. I just hate them.

Posted by: Jahnavi Sep 20 2009, 6:25 AM

Aw, I love Waking Up In Vegas. And T Swift too, for that matter... But I agree on the SRSLY-disliking-rap thing.

Posted by: Toriamelio Sep 20 2009, 6:35 PM

diddo on that. Whats with that messed up rap? ugh sick.gif

Posted by: humbu111 Sep 20 2009, 6:47 PM

Noo! Right Round is amazing! It owns the original (Zing forced me to listen to like more than 5 previous versions including the original, and the modern one is WAY better IMO). Well I agree rap aint that great, like I wouldnt listen to a pure rap song, but the ones I listen to have an awesome chorus which is why I listen to them (a perfect example is Sugar by Flo Rida ft. Wynter). Thats where Right Round stands for me, I dont care for the rapping inbetween, but the chorus is simply amazing. Though there are some rap parts I really like too, like Missy Elliot's in Bad Girl by Danity Kane.

Posted by: Toriamelio Sep 20 2009, 7:02 PM

ooh this just gave me a great opportunity to be immature! thanks humbu XD!
Don't say aint, your mother will faint, your father will fall in a bucket of paint, your sister will cry, your brother will die, and the cat and the dog will say bye-bye! lol I'm just sooo mature

Posted by: Boo Sep 20 2009, 7:32 PM

Ha ha, actually, the chorus of Right Round is what bugs me the most: it's terribly raunchy... just... well, the lyrics are just gross in my opinion. I have no idea what is being said when he's rapping between each chorus, so I can't really say that I dislike that part if I do not understand a word of it. lol
That's just my opinion, though. Overly-raunchy lyrics tend to annoy me to no end, so... icon_biggrin.gif

@ StellaRocks: Aww. *sniff* No Coldplay? icon_biggrin.gif
Lol; I do think that their Viva La Vida is being overplayed, though. I personally love the song, but I can see where it would get old. :/ That is the only Coldplay song they play on the radio anymore.

I'm with Jahnavi on Waking Up in Vegas... I enjoy it, too. ^_^ Although, it reminds me of Florida (of all places.) Long story short, when in Florida, I saw that music video on VH1... every single morning. icon_razz.gif That and it was constantly on the radio.

Posted by: StellaRocks Sep 20 2009, 7:34 PM

Sorry no Coldplay I CAN'T stand Viva La Vida or any of their other songs(sorry Boo)

Lol; it's alright. ^_^ We all have different musical tastes.

Posted by: FloraFan Sep 21 2009, 1:51 PM

'sweet about me' by...argh forgot her name
but it makes me want to rip my hair out

Posted by: Jahnavi Sep 21 2009, 3:26 PM

I love Viva La Vida. (...But it's the only Coldplay song I really know well, so I probably shouldn't comment further, lol...)

Posted by: Another Morning Sep 22 2009, 3:56 AM

Wham - Wake Me Up Before You Go Go

I don't know what it is about this song, but I just hate it .____. It makes it hard because my mom loves it and listens to it a lot.

Posted by: Toriamelio Oct 1 2009, 3:22 AM

this is random, but I just want to get it off my chest. I absolutely posatutly HATE, LOATHE, DESPISE ect. any family channel type people and there songs. like the joe bros, Demi, Saleina, Justin Bieber, Miley and so on.

Posted by: Another Morning Dec 1 2009, 6:41 AM

Justin Bieber makes me lol so hard you don't even know. I can't hate him, he's too hilarious.

But I do hate that song The Christmas Shoes or whatever it's called. I don't even remember who sings it. It just tries way to hard to be touching or whatever and comes off as annoying :/ Or maybe I'm just a terrible person with a cold, dead husk of a heart. Either way.

Posted by: P-girl Dec 1 2009, 10:13 PM

Not to mention totally missing the point of the song. It's basically someone goading someone else into a devil's deal, no matter how you slice it.

Posted by: {§hani™} Dec 3 2009, 9:11 AM

eeep Fergie i hate her with a passion, when i went to see the police in '06 she was there.. it was a terrible performance and the wrong type of audience too.
she cant sing live!!!! TT_TT

and god these bands are horrid too:
fall out boy, Aqua, Kings of Leon, ting tings ect TT_TT and miley cyrus, jonas brothers all that disney stuff.

Posted by: P-girl Dec 3 2009, 9:15 AM

Can I nominate Kate Perry's 'I kissed a girl'? Not only is the melody annoying, the 'Girls kissing other girls is just a fase, you guys! It's sexy, but wrong in the long run!' message is downright offensive, especially since she used it to come over as 'Naughty'. (When growing up, my mother had two female friends who were in love. So I might take this to personally.)

Noo the Ting Tings are awesome! They're so unique and have an amazing style!

Posted by: Another Morning Dec 4 2009, 12:55 AM

I'm now agreeing with the people who voted for "You Belong With Me" by Taylor Swift. They play it WAY TO MUCH and it annoys me now.

My newest annoyance: Fireflies by Owl City. I actually really liked this song when I first heard it, until, yet again, it was played to death on the radio. It didn't help that basically everybody I know used the chorus as their facebook status at least twice.

Posted by: winxclubrox23 Dec 4 2009, 12:58 AM

Omg AM. I feel the same way about Fireflies. I've never liked the song and...ugh.

I also hate all that is Justin Bieber. He's not ever good, and was discovered on Youtube. That's um...wow.

has anyonne heard that 'bullet proof' song? its played over- and over and over over over and ovvvveerrr again on australian radios!! CURSE YOU NOVA!!!XD

Posted by: SolarfireWinx Dec 26 2009, 8:26 AM

Anything like new Disney bubblegum pop = no. IE Demi Lovato, ((She can't sing and always looks like she's wearing a wig.)), Miley Cyrus ((she's a self absorbed stupid hick and we all know it, okay? XD)) Jonas Brothers ((Ew. Just, no.)) and Selena Gomez. Coheed and Cambria ((They're great until they sing. Horrible, horrible, horrible.)), Kings of Leon, The Bravery ((They're really brave for going up on stage sounding like that. Holy crap. My ears began to bleed. x.X)), anything even remotely country except Taylor Swift and Rascal Flatts ((I started liking Taylor's "Love Story" after the whole Kanye thing and I like Rascal Flatts's "What Hurts the Most" That's it.)) Umm, I loathe anything chipmunk'd, its pathetic. Yeah, a lot of Christmas songs piss me off too. icon_razz.gif ((I'm looking at you, Copacabana Christmas, the Christmas Shoes, Where are you Christmas and anything Burl Ives.))

Posted by: Winx4eva! Dec 26 2009, 8:58 AM

Fireflies? Oh Gosh, everybody is obessed with that song lately. *Hids head on desk* Every corner I turn, I heard it. I swear it's haunting me.

I swear my brain nearly exploded with I heard, 'I don't even now your name' T_T Shut-up! Shut-up!

Posted by: Another Morning Dec 26 2009, 7:02 PM

Taylor Swift has a new song out, something about 15. And they've already overplayed it D: I didn't even like it the first time!

Posted by: winxclubrox23 Dec 26 2009, 10:34 PM

Fifteen isn't new at all. It came out in 2008. They've just been overplaying it. Over, and over and over....

Posted by: Jahnavi Dec 27 2009, 4:28 AM

Yup, it came out last year, with her album, Fearless. It randomly became huge this year...

Posted by: Another Morning Dec 27 2009, 6:23 AM

Ah. Well my station just started playing it. And dear god, do they play it.

Posted by: Zing Dec 27 2009, 6:51 AM

Haha I'm noticing that Kings of Leon and the Bravery have come up xD
I love those bands. I feel they are the last breath of rock and roll that's mainstream anyway. Same with Bruce Springsteen.

Hmmm....pretty much most of the mainstream stuff makes my ears bleed. I hate all Disney Channel/Radio Disney stars. I hate Taylor Swift, I honestly don't think she is talented. Umm....I don't know I just don't like most modern music xD

Posted by: P-girl Dec 27 2009, 10:33 AM

Uhm, okay, this is very personal, but I feel like sharing, since I just figured out just WHY.....

There's this R&B song called 'How Come, How Long'. The song itself is so-so.... but the lyrics (And accompanying video-clip) are about an abusive relationship and ends up with a desperation kill..... let's just say this song came out at an inopportunite time in my life and leave it at that. This is my personal song that makes me want to stab something or throw the radio across the room. It always was, but now it starts to dawn to me just why. Thanks for reminding me of that time, stupid song.

I really hate Justin Bieber. First of all he looks about 6. Second of all he sucks at singing. And third of all he's a liar because in almost all of his songs he gets the girl. *whispers* And lets face it, we all know that would never happen in reality. XXD

Posted by: FloraFan Mar 10 2010, 9:04 PM

I hate Justin Beiber! He makes me want to hurl.
He's been a trending topic on twitter for over like 2 months now. It's annoying and every second you see his name. Argh

Posted by: P-girl Jun 7 2010, 8:25 PM

Uuurgh, just listened trough the whole of Beyoncé's 'If I were a boy', suddenly remembering why I never did. I hate demonisation. Be it individuals, races, or in this case, gender. Girls can be just as cruel, Beyoncé, get that in your head. You're not empowering by talking men down, you're prejudiced.

Posted by: ellieluvsdolphins Dec 5 2010, 3:22 AM

Any Justin Bieber songs, most Taylor Swift songs, and most Katy Perry songs. I absolutely despise "Tik Tok" by Ke$ha. I don't mind her other songs that much, but her live voice makes me want to stick my head into sand like an ostrich, so I won't have to hear it, so I can never call myself a fan. I don't really like Kings of Leon's "Use Somebody"... hmmm I think that's it...

I agree with you on that. & listen to "I'd Lie" by Taylor Swift, and please tell me I'm not crazy in thinking the chorus has the same tune as "Girl Next Door" icon_neutral.gif

I actually like some of her songs, I just hate having to hear them every minute of every day. My sister is obsessed with her, and she's constantly blasting her music. I wake up hearing Taylor Swift. I do my homework hearing Taylor Swift. I rant about hearing Taylor Swift while hearing Taylor Swift. DOES MY SISTER NOT LIKE ANY OTHER ARTIST????!!! O.O
So it's not really Taylor's fault icon_razz.gif
I mean come on, I'm obsessed with a few artists too, but I'm not constantly shoving them into anyone's face

Her obsession has begun to die down though, so maybe someday years from now I'll get over all this and enjoy some of her songs, like I used to before my sis had heard of her thumbsup.gif

Speaking off Taylor Swift....

Don't know the title, but she goes all 'You were Romeo, I was the Scarlett Letter' and such things.

Dear Taylor Swift (And anyone else who uses Romeo and Juliet as the ultimate in Romance)

Romeo and Juliet both DIED due to their incompetence in love. It's about two impulsive teenagers who throw away everything to be with someone they've barely known. Get it in your head.

Posted by: W.I.N.X Dec 7 2010, 4:14 PM

....Just The Way You Are by Bruno Mars. Call me cynical, because I am, but in the video he sings that to a pretty girl and the cynic in me doubts he'd be singing it to an unattractive girl. Beauty may be the eye of the beholder, but more often than not, said eyes see things similarly. Plus, it's overplayed and I'm sick of people being all I WANT MY CRUSH TO SING THIS TO ME BUT HE DOESN'T EVEN KNOW I EXIST WAHHH.

Posted by: P-girl Dec 7 2010, 4:24 PM

Not to mention it's shallow. Her hair, her eyes, her lips.... but how 'bout her personality, huh?

Posted by: W.I.N.X Dec 7 2010, 4:41 PM

Thank you. So she's not a nice person? I mean, I get the point is that whoever this girl is she's meant to be beautiful but not think so, but the song never mentions that she's a good person AND is seen as beautiful.

Posted by: P-girl Dec 7 2010, 5:29 PM

All I ever come to know about her is her insecurity..... not the best sign.

Another recent one: The Black Eyed Peas and their butchering remix of the song 'I've had the time of my life.'

The song is Love Story lol. And I see what you mean, but I think she was just using the concept of lovers who aren't allowed to be with each other and all, and since Romeo and Juliet are so well known she based the song on that. It doesnt mean it has to end the same way, since she didnt leave it open ended for the listener to assume that the characters in the song had the Shakespeare canon ending. She re-wrote the ending to suit what she was going for, think of it as a fanfic sorta thing lol.

As for Just The Way You Are, its about how so many teenagers today (girls in particular? =S) are really self conscious about their appearances and are always thinking they're ugly or fat even when they're not. Having someone reassure them that they are actually beautiful in a song like that is like considered really sweet lol which is why people love the song so much. About the personality thing, well this particular song isnt focusing on that. If it was a big social issue kinda thing where people were all "I'm a bad person with a horrible personality D:" then someone could write a hit single about how the person is actually a really good person on the inside and all. But since at this point in time people are underestimating their own looks, this song works. I dunnoe thats just how I see it =S

Sorry this might just be me defending them cause I really like the songs, but just my opinion =P

Posted by: P-girl Dec 7 2010, 6:05 PM

TO each his own.

Also, it's not about the ending: what bugs me about all this is that Romeo and Juliet is satire. I just think it's silly people see it as a romance for the ages. If so, does Airplane! count?

Hey, I don't like either song (Well, I used to like Love Story before I heard it every minute of the day) but I agree with what you said, especially about Just the Way You Are.

Another song I thought of: Whip My Hair by Willow Smith. I feel kinda bad to hate on her because she's only 10, but that song is pretty annoying wacko.gif

Posted by: W.I.N.X Dec 8 2010, 4:45 AM

Indeed, indeed, to each his own.

But on Whip My Hair, Ellie, don't feel too bad. You're not hating, hating would be saying things like OMG WILLOW IS SOOOO UGLY AND FAT etc. Basically making unfounded nasty claims against her. Which is particularly bad because she's ten. However, you're basically just expressing your dislike of the song, which is perfectly alright. If anyone, even a ten year old, expects to release work to the public, they have to understand the fact people won't like it.

Posted by: winxclubrox23 Dec 9 2010, 5:38 AM

Yes. That song. It makes me want to lock myself in a closest and never come out. Ever. Holy. Cow.

Posted by: P-girl Dec 10 2010, 8:31 AM

You know what's awful too?

Remixes of songs... that totally miss the friggin' point of the original.

The first one coming to mind is the previously mentioned 'Poor unfortunate souls' by the Jonas Brothers.
Another one was an awful dance mix of 'Another day in Paradise' showing people lounging at the beach in their clip. Urgh. Say about the Brandy one what you want, at least she realised the meaning and tried to honor it.

In addition to awful Jonas Brothers covers, their cover of Hello Goodbye quite literally made me turn into a spluttering, angry Beatles-fan. While y love for The Beatles would have something to do with my hate of it, it's still just an awful song and it makes me want to throw a brick through a window. It's...not good. ANd then, the whole Jonas Brother's fangirls being all 'The jobros are soooooo much bettter than the beatles. lol lmao. the beatles are badd'. [/rant]

Beatles.... bad?! *Twitch*

The Beatles are amongst Jimi Hendrix, Johnny Cash and Mozart; even if you don't like 'em, you DON'T say they're bad!

Posted by: W.I.N.X Dec 10 2010, 9:32 AM

Worse still, their reasoning is usually that the Jonas Brother's are hot and the Beatles are old.

...Pfft. The Beatles shaped rock music.

I sometimes fear for the next generation (I'm 24, I shouldn't have to say that!).
HISTORY, DO YOU SPEAK IT?!

That's my biggest complaint. It's not that they don't like the Beatles, I mean, I'm not too big of a fan, but indeed missing the fact that Bands like that shaped music as we know it. Give them the respect they deserve.

Posted by: W.I.N.X Dec 10 2010, 9:52 AM

Yeah, I mean, even if you're not a fan, you can't deny the impact they made or what they did.

I completely agree with everything you stated here. thumbsup.gif Katy Perry's "California Girls" particularly bothers me; why would anyone want to listen to a song about the "privileged" (and by this I mean rich) nonexistent (meaning that her portrayal reflects that of "Hollywood"; false... not true... not real) young "perfect" women of California? blink.gif Living with a sibling who is obsessed with the song is truly torturous...

Right about now, I'm also currently detesting all forms of Christmas carols... (Currently being overplayed on the radio... and repeated... and repeated... and repeated...)

And, as always: rap... The constant degradation of women translating into flailing attempts at backing up the rapper's false facade of masculinity.. I swear, that's the only reason why they include lines of women's inferiority, as well as unneccessary cursing and the like... it's to provide them (the rapper) with a sense of superiority (that "manly-man" appeal, so to speak). thumbsdown.gif Not so... A true artist need not hide behind a mask of harshness and inhumane discrimination to prove their "talents" to the world.. And a true musical artist, in my opinion, is someone who can sing a beautiful love song or touching lament and be genuinely and completely proud of it... Now that's confidence!

In short, any musician that degrades another (group or individual) in any way is NOT worth the listen and NOT deserving of the money, the fame, and the "pride." Unfortunately, the vast majority of songs within the rap genre do just that, and artists producing such garbage, for reasons confounding to me, become wildly popular... It's a shame.

*Cough*

Let's not debase rap in it's entirety, please. There are some pretty awesome rap songs:

Let me make myself clear: this doesn't mean I don't agree with your statements, on the contrary. They just.... don't include all of rap. That's like saying all rock is mindless screaming in a mike. Which it isn't. As I've shown, rap can be about history, and even making a political statement. (The middle one's a bit of a diss track, but dayum if that beat ain't fine.). In fact, Rap started as a bit of a protest against the bad living conditions of certain members of the American population.

My apologies for derailing this thread. Just wanted to say my peace as a bit of a fan of rap.

Umm... I didn't dismiss all of it. I stated that the majority of rap songs (particularly hugely popular ones) are guilty of the aforementioned; not all of them. :/ (Last line of my post) I understand, though. I find that it is very easy to misinterpret messages online. Perhaps I should have emphasized that point (about the majority) a bit more.

I myself have developed a fondness for a couple of rap songs (one being by the Gorillaz, actually).

Sorry, sorry....

But I feel like rap is getting the whipping dog of the internet, something it doesn't deserve. (Like those '93% of the people have switched over to rap, if you're one of the 7% who still have taste in music, copy this' messages. Geez, guys. A bit much, don't you think?)

While I'm not too big on rap, I do think that's a bit too much. Not just because of the bashing of the genre, but also b/c of the "taste in music" part. There is NO SUCH THING as good or bad taste in music. Everyone is entitled to a opinion. You can talk about how much you hate a song, but when someone brings 'taste' into the argument, it's just STUPID. (unless of course you're just saying something like 'well everyone has a different taste in music', without being rude about it.) No offense to anyone who's ever used musical taste in an argument or something, but it just rubs me the wrong way.

Thanks. I don't mind complaining about Rap and (most of) it's general problems. However, it's kind of 'In' to moan about, and it's getting a bad rep. (Heh, Pun.)

But then again, I grew up with Dutch rap, which I think is, if you excuse my bias, much MUCH better then most countries' rap. But then again, rapping is about venting about problems, and I can relate more to Dutch problems.

It's basically "in" to moan about anything popular. Even with other stuff, like movies, books, etc.. if it's popular, there's an army of people out there who think they're so cool for hating something icon_razz.gif lol it's kinda funny actually...

Now if you've given it a chance and you honestly don't like it, then by all means dislike it, but please don't be one of those people who hates anything and everything without doing the research first icon_sad.gif
Even if I don't expect much good out of something, I check it out first. I don't like most of Katy Perry's songs, but I listened to her entire album before I came to that conclusion. I didn't just hate her because she was on the radio.
(that's not directed to you or anyone else here by the way, I just worded it like that because it makes more sense)
Oh but what good does it do to rant about something where it's not directed to someone.. I should probably post that somewhere I know it goes on (like neopets for example), but I'm sure I'd get flamed for that... and called a sheep...

I agree that it is not right to complain about something (ie., a music genre) unless you have heard/researched it extensively (I myself wouldn't have said anything about rap had I not been exposed to it frequently), but, at the same time, there are exceptions (ie., some things that can jump out as problematic right from the start without thorough listening of the genre).

For example, it is very clear that the degradation of women and excessive cursing are two common themes in most popular rap songs (at least in the U.S.), and that simple fact deems it worthy of at least some criticism. It doesn't mean that the criticism was made to be "in" or what have you, but because, quite frankly, some songs within the genre simply deserve a critical eye. For example, I posted what I did because of my discontent with the degradation and the way some people passively accept these said songs (at least, where I live) simply because they are "popular." They do not take the time to dissect the lyrics and realize how so very cruel some of them are. As the thread's title suggests, such songs make me angry, and so, I posted that they did so. I would post examples, but am not going to for the sake of avoiding explicit content. They're not hard to find - any number of them can be found on top 10 lists anywhere.

I'm not saying this is true everywhere, of course, and also not saying that the whole genre deserves criticism - I'm also not saying that only the rap genre produces such songs (as it can be found in nearly every genre, from rock to pop - it just seems, with popular songs, it is frequently blatant within the rap genre nowadays, at least here in the U.S.). For example, I know that in my favorite genre, alternative rock, there are plenty of songs that have cruel and degrading lyrics - and I am discontent with them, too.

Meh. :/

I'm sorry. I never meant to make you feel uncomfortable or 'Wrong' (Wrong in an opinion? Stupid.) I just get really defensive about my own preferences sometimes.

Posted by: Boo Dec 23 2010, 4:09 PM

Oh, it's quite alright. icon_wink.gif Don't feel bad about it. In fact, I'm precisely the same way (which probably has been made quite clear.)

I'm not sure if i am on topic or not but Friday by Rebecca Black really makes me angry, not because I think it' a bad song, but because at my school every Friday, someone has to bring up Rebecca Black.

A genre hated here in Hamilton is Country, which is my favourite genre. I love listening to Taylor Swift, Rascal Flatts and The Band Perry etc. but everyone keeps bothering me about it and everyone is always like "Eww, I hate country"
