You do (video)videourl(/video) and save it, it embeds the video in the page. But if you go to edit the post it changes the BB code into HTML which doesn't work

Maybe allow us to use html tags? That way we could either copy the embeded link from youtube or use the video tag, and it would still work

No, to embed Flash, you need to use <object> (and <embed> )
However, IE (no longer anymore) and Opera has a "click to activate" if you use those tags, one way of bypassing it is to use SWFObject which uses Javascript ( <script> ) to embed Flash.
That's what we are actually using.
