Come to think of it, any time some super powerful thing is trying to take over, everywhere, how come a bunch of high school students have to save the world?
I have been saying this to myself since I started to rewatch the seiries.

Redfountain has space ships, and ANY civilization that can make SPACESHIPS and use MAGIC should be able to come up with something like sci-fi weapons.. I mean, ships and weapons go hand in hand. Unless said people are totaly peaceful, in which case they get taken over, easy whenever they go into war..

It really perplexes me that in the movie, when the bug lady attacks Alfea they are all scared because its the start of a new year and the students don't know how to fight..
It's a school
For Fairies.
Not soldiers who defend the universe.

Seeing as Layla's boyfriend (I forget his name) was pretty powerful in both normal combat and magic, why can't they get a bunch of wizards around with swords to defend their city? I mean, depending on a bunch of teenagers to save your life and your city is really stupid, seeing as how EVERYONE in Magix was defeated so easy in season 1 when the Trix had the dragonfire.

This makes me think, how would the winx universe fair up if somebody had something like this:

Altough I can get your argument, this bit bugged me.
Fairies are defenders of their realm
Like guardian angels
Only sparklier
Kind of an important part of being a fairy

I agree that the the Forces of Glitter are probably the only kind of useful defense the planets have, but also since it has echoes of old European Imperialism, I'm betting dollars to donuts there's a lot of arranged marriages. That way, power is consolidated and infighting is kept to an absolute minimum.

Well, we had the whole Sky/Diaspro/Bloom schtick, and Layla/Ophir/Nabu was arranged, to...... so yeah, probably. And it is implied that monarchy is the most widespread form of ruling, and each dimension/planet has their own army.

I kind of thought that Magix was more of a democracy, seeing we saw a council of elders/leaders in one episode.

but even if they expect the power of love and blindness-by-sparkles to protect them, why do they leave that to TEENAGERS? Maybe, just maybe because the viewers of the show would flock for the door if they saw Faragonsa in skimpy, short skirts and wings?

yea thats a bad image in my head

Erm, people grow up, mature, become adults. Everyone, including the Winx, will eventually lose the 'Teen' to their age. Just because we never SEE graduated, older fairies, doesn't mean they aren't there.

It would have been easier to asume that the universe of magix was a "republic" like SW, with all the planets/dimensions(which one actually is?) ruled by monarchs based on "constitutional values". If people on earth don't tolerate absolute monarchs, maybe the Magix people didn't get to see what happened to the lasts absolute monarchs on earth. And wouldn't be simpler if it was just one planet magix in all, or simply a flat "pizza" dimension. Whats the point of having all these planets except to make the show look more gizmo?

Making it a republic would rob it of its idealistic swords and sorcery IN SPACE atmosphere. It would also strip the over-saturated inclusion of Princesses of most of its kick.

Not like that's a bad thing.

Indeed, it fits the atmosphere.
Altough I secretly hope that once in the run we get to a planet/dimension were things are run differently (I mean, we still haven't visited Musa's homeworld, Tecna's and I'm also curious about how Paladins fit in this universe), I'm also curious if there are realms were humans AREN'T the dominant species. We know there are at least Elves and Leprechauns.... and Red Fountain in Season 1 also showed us quite a bit of non-human humanoids. (Admittedly, we have the Mermaids in Andros... they seem to be mostly seperate from the humans of the same planet, with their own Queen and all....)

It could possible be a republic, what with the total rip off of light sabers and what not.

Humans AREN'T the dominate species. They are fairies and magical beings. Hah. Yeah... >.<

This is my theory on how everything fits into place

There is Earth. Plain old Earth with people hating eachother, like our Earth!
Then there is the magical dimension, parallel to Earth's. With.. you guessed it, different laws of physics, which allow people who are born there (who originally came from Earth, somehow) to manipulate space around them, thus magic. And since they are able to mess with everything around them, they are able to become more technologically advanced!

The "realms" are just another way of saying planet, and who rules it.

But they're portrayed as humans, that's what I meant.

....

Y'know, for a magical dimension, I think it's odd to have only the occasional different specie.

Well if they were to make up a new race every episode, it would be called Stargate: Winx Club

That made me lol

I'd like to see more elfs and leprechauns..

Poor Winx. Falling into the old anime trap of making aliens all look human.

You know what we need? A race of Wendigos. Big, scary Wendigos.

but how is one to imagine an alien race that doesn't look anything like human? how would they function?

Its easier to make humanoid aliens

At least K-Pax had a plausible explanation as for why Prote (if he really was an alien) looked human.

But yes, it's easier to draw. It's also why they really didn't start introducing alien-looking individuals in Star Trek that appeared regularly until CGI was actually worth using.

Well, diffirent aliens that didn't resemble humans would not only be hard to create, it would just be hard to make it real.

I mean, in fantasy, dragons have 1 head, 2 "arms" 2 "legs" and a tail, like everything else.

It's just a shortcoming people have, its hard to create something that doesn't resemble something else

Dragons don't always look like that. There's a whole page on TVTropes dedicated to all the different types of dragons out there in fiction.
